Download or read book Latin America after the Financial Crisis written by Juan E. Santarcángelo and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-01-26 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Latin America was one of the regions least affected by the global financial crisis of 2008. During this time of widespread economic downfall, Latin America continued to achieve an annual growth rate of around 5%. Latin America after the Financial Crisis explains how the global financial crisis affected the region and why it was not as severe as other crises in the past. The collection covers data from Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Cuba, Mexico, and Venezuela, and demystifies the impact of the crisis on the accumulation path of the region without losing sight of each country's particularities. Each country is analyzed by leading specialized and heterodox researchers who have vast experience in the field and who use an array of heterodox perspectives, from Keynesian to Kaleckian and Marxian to Sraffian.

Download or read book Franco and the Condor Legion written by Michael Alpert and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2019-06-27 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Spanish Civil War was fought on land and at sea but also in an age of great interest in air warfare and the rapid development of warplanes. The war in Spain came a turning point in the development of military aircraft and was the arena in which new techniques of air war were rehearsed including high-speed dogfights, attacks on ships, bombing of civilian areas and tactical air-ground cooperation. At the heart of the air war were the Condor Legion, a unit composed of military personnel from Hitler's Germany who fought for Franco's Nationalists in Spain. In this book, Michael Alpert provides the first study in English of the Spanish Civil War in the air. He describes and analyses the intervention of German, Italian and Soviet aircraft in the Spanish conflict, as well as the supply of aircraft in general and the role of volunteer and mercenary airmen. His book provides new perspectives on the air war in Spain, the precedents set for World War II and the possible lessons learnt.

Download or read book Mass Killings and Violence in Spain 1936 1952 written by Peter Anderson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-09-19 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Historians have only recently established the scale of the violence carried out by the supporters of General Franco during and after the Spanish Civil War of 1936-1939. An estimated 88,000 unidentified victims of Francoist violence remain to be exhumed from mass graves and given a dignified burial, and for decades, the history of these victims has also been buried. This volume brings together a range of Spanish and British specialists who offer an original and challenging overview of this violence. Contributors not only examine the mass killings and incarcerations, but also carefully consider how the repression carried out in the government zone during the Civil War - long misrepresented in Francoist accounts - seeped into everyday life. A final section explores ways of facing Spain’s recent violent past.

Download or read book Soundscapes from the Americas written by Donna A. Buchanan and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-01 with total page 211 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dedicated to the late Gerard Béhague (1937-2005), whose pioneering work in Latin American music, popular culture, and performance studies contributed extensively to ethnomusicological discourse in the 1970s-1990s, this anthology offers comparative perspectives on the evolving legacy of performance ethnography in socio-musical analysis. President of the Society for Ethnomusicology from 1979-81, editor of its journal, Ethnomusicology, from 1974-78, and founder and editor of the trilingual Latin American Music Review from 1980 until his death, Béhague also established the ethnomusicology graduate program at the University of Texas at Austin in 1974, thereby influencing the training and thinking of dozens of the field’s practitioners. Among these are the volume’s eight authors, whose contributions reflect the heritage but also contemporary trajectories of Béhague’s scholarly concerns. Prefaced by an essay outlining key developments in the ethnography of performance paradigm, the volume’s seven case studies portray snapshots of musical life in representative communities of the Americas, including the southwestern and Pacific United States, Puerto Rico, Bolivia, Chile, Cuba, and Ecuador. Situated in milieus ranging from the indigenous festivals of the Andean highlands, to the competitive public gatherings of poet-singers in post-Pinochet Chile, to the Puerto Rican dance halls of the Hawaiian islands, these studies pose anthropological inquiries into the ontology of performance practice, the social power of poetic performativity, and the experience and embodiment of sound in place.
Download or read book Stories That Make History written by Lynn Stephen and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2021-09-20 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From covering the massacre of students at Tlatelolco in 1968 and the 1985 earthquake to the Zapatista rebellion in 1994 and the disappearance of forty-three students in 2014, Elena Poniatowska has been one of the most important chroniclers of Mexican social, cultural, and political life. In Stories That Make History, Lynn Stephen examines Poniatowska's writing, activism, and political participation, using them as a lens through which to understand critical moments in contemporary Mexican history. In her crónicas—narrative journalism written in a literary style featuring firsthand testimonies—Poniatowska told the stories of Mexico's most marginalized people. Throughout, Stephen shows how Poniatowska helped shape Mexican politics and forge a multigenerational political community committed to social justice. In so doing, she presents a biographical and intellectual history of one of Mexico's most cherished writers and a unique history of modern Mexico.
