Book Vocational Training

Download or read book Vocational Training written by Gerhard Bosch and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2009-09-10 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The last decade has given rise to a strong public discourse in most highly industrialized economies about the importance of a skilled workforce as a key response to the competitive dynamic fostered by economic globalisation. The challenge for different training regimes is twofold: attracting young people into the vocational training system while continuing to train workers already in employment. Yet, on the whole, most countries and their training systems have failed to reach those goals. How can we explain this contradiction? Why is vocational training seen to be an "old" institution? Why does vocational training not seem to be easily adapted to the realities of the 21st century? This book seeks to respond to these important questions. It does so through an in-depth comparative analysis of the vocational training systems in ten different countries: Australia, Canada, Denmark, France, Germany, Korea, Mexico, Morocco, the United Kingdom and the USA.

Book Post school Pathways of Migrant Origin Youth in Europe

Download or read book Post school Pathways of Migrant Origin Youth in Europe written by Merike Darmody and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-06-26 with total page 187 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume explores the role of structure and agency in shaping post-school pathways for migrant-origin young people, providing new insights from countries with different migration histories and transition systems. The book collates the work of leading international scholars to cover a number of jurisdictions across Europe, looking in depth at migrant transitions in different contexts. The chapters examine the influence of different education systems, migration status, race and ethnicity, social class, gender, and resilience on the success of transitions to higher education and the labour market. The book highlights the need for host countries to put in place comprehensive policies to counter ethnic inequalities and discrimination in their education and labour market systems while facilitating and supporting immigrant youth in pursuing their post-school pathways. This timely book will be of great interest to scholars, researchers, and postgraduate students in the fields of migration studies, sociology of education, and equity in education. Policymakers will find this book useful in informing policy development in education and the labour market.

Download or read book Les syst mes de mise en uvre de la protection sociale written by Kathy Lindert and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2023-01-13 with total page 727 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book The Third Globalization

Download or read book The Third Globalization written by Dan Breznitz and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2013-03-26 with total page 431 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Given the powerfully negative and ongoing impact of the Great Recession on western economies, the question of whether historically wealthy nations-the US, Western European countries, Japan-can stay wealthy has become an overriding concern for virtually every interested observer. Can their middle classes remain comfortable as more and more good and technically jobs disappear to other parts of the world? Can they support themselves as they devote more and more economic resources to an aging population base? In The Third Globalization, eminent political economists Dan Breznitz and John Zysman gather some of the discipline's leading scholars to assess the prospects for growth and prosperity among advanced industrial nations.

Book The Unemployment Trap

Download or read book The Unemployment Trap written by Mateo Alaluf and published by Manhattan Publishing Company. This book was released on 1992 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report defines the social exclusion process by examining long-term unemployment and educational deficiencies in Europe and assessing the scope and effectiveness of the steps taken by the governments concerned to deal with the problem. Chapter I looks at education and prolonged unemployment in six countries that reflect the range of European experience--Belgium, France, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, and the United Kingdom. Chapter II considers the countries individually from the point of view both of the extent of long-term unemployment and of the steps taken to limit its effects. Chapter III outlines the main features of long-term unemployment, while chapter IV reviews the types of measures introduced in the different countries and assesses the impact of national policies. Chapter V looks at the problems associated with lack of education and training and with illiteracy, chapter VI sets the problems in the context of the labor market, and chapter VII in that of economic policy options. The final chapter discusses the relationship between educational deficiencies and long-term unemployment. The aim is to identify both the ways in which social exclusion operates and the role of public policy in this area. (Contains 50 references.) (YLB)

Book The Place of Work in African Childhoods

Download or read book The Place of Work in African Childhoods written by Michael Bourdillon and published by African Books Collective. This book was released on 2015-10-19 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about how work enters and affects the lives of children in Africa, taking for granted neither the traditional values surrounding childrens work, nor the international standards against it. Many African societies nurture their children on the ingrained notion that children must work as part of their process of growing up. Children participate in their families and communities through the work they do in the house and in whatever else their families do. Such views are, however, antithetical to the dominant views in Europe and North America which see childhood as a time of freedom from responsibility and economic activity. These views have become so popular with the elites in other countries to the extent that they now drive international campaigns against child labour, and have been incorporated into what are now considered universal international standards and conventions. This book was conceived within the framework of the CODESRIA tradition of taking African perspectives seriously and not allowing social research in Africa to become subservient to values from outside. African scholars remain keenly aware of the need not to isolate themselves from developments in the wider world, which could lead to stagnation. This book, through empirical observation of the lives of African children, the work they do, its place in their lives, and what the children say about it, proposes new perspectives towards a new understanding of this complex stage of human development. Work is not simply about the right to income: work provides identity and status in society, and participation in the community. People relate to one another through work. Those who do not work are often without status and are at the periphery of society. One of the major ways in which this book differs from most of the available literature is in the understanding it brings to the problem of child labour. There are economic reasons why children may need an income of their own. There is the demographic fact that the proportion of children to adults in low-income countries is nearly double that in high-income societies. This book attempts to demonstrate that work is both necessary and beneficial in terms of a childs development to become a full, responsible, and respectable member of society.
