Book Handicapped Married Couples

Download or read book Handicapped Married Couples written by Ann Craft and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-07-05 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite handicaps of low mental ability, deprived backgrounds or psychiatric and physical disability, most married couples with disabilities manage to give and receive much personal satisfaction and pleasure in their marriages. This is of special interest to professionals and social workers, who in the course of their jobs are called upon to give support and service to people with mental disabilities. Originally published in 1979 Ann and Michael Craft had spent four years researching a sample of 45 marriages with at least one spouse with a mental disability. In three-quarters of the partnerships both spouses have a mental disability. This was the largest group of married subjects with a mental disability studied in this country at the time, and the Crafts’ conclusions were of considerable importance, for, with the recent trend towards normalization, marriage was becoming a viable possibility for more and more people with mental disabilities. The purposes of the study, therefore, were to give an account of the authors’ research concerning married couples with mental disabilities, to suggest some ways in which service to such couples might be improved, and to provide material for teaching purposes. This book is a re-issue originally published in 1979. The language used is a reflection of its era and no offence is meant by the Publishers to any reader by this re-publication.

Book The Evolution of Animal Communication

Download or read book The Evolution of Animal Communication written by William A. Searcy and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2010-01-01 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gull chicks beg for food from their parents. Peacocks spread their tails to attract potential mates. Meerkats alert family members of the approach of predators. But are these--and other animals--sometimes dishonest? That's what William Searcy and Stephen Nowicki ask in The Evolution of Animal Communication. They take on the fascinating yet perplexing question of the dependability of animal signaling systems. The book probes such phenomena as the begging of nesting birds, alarm calls in squirrels and primates, carotenoid coloration in fish and birds, the calls of frogs and toads, and weapon displays in crustaceans. Do these signals convey accurate information about the signaler, its future behavior, or its environment? Or do they mislead receivers in a way that benefits the signaler? For example, is the begging chick really hungry as its cries indicate or is it lobbying to get more food than its brothers and sisters? Searcy and Nowicki take on these and other questions by developing clear definitions of key issues, by reviewing the most relevant empirical data and game theory models available, and by asking how well theory matches data. They find that animal communication is largely reliable--but that this basic reliability also allows the clever deceiver to flourish. Well researched and clearly written, their book provides new insight into animal communication, behavior, and evolution.

The author has studied many American texts and explains how he has mixed their ideas with his own 30 years experience of British racing and betting. There are no systems, no rules and no guarantees in this book, yet anybody who likes to bet on horse racing is sure to find material here that will challenge accepted beliefs and persuade them to think in new ways about their betting. Book The Downhill Lie

Download or read book The Downhill Lie written by Carl Hiaasen and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2009-05-05 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Filled with harrowing divots, deadly doglegs, and excruciating sandtraps, The Downhill Lie is a hilarious chronicle of mis-adventure that will have you rolling with laughter. Bestselling author Carl Hiaasen wisely quit golfing in 1973. But some ambitions refuse to die, and as the years passed and the memories of slices and hooks faded, it dawned on Carl that there might be one thing in life he could do better in middle age than he could as a youth. So gradually he ventured back to the rolling, frustrating green hills of the golf course, where he ultimately—and foolishly—agreed to compete in a country-club tournament against players who can actually hit the ball.
