Book The Solar Energy Transition

Download or read book The Solar Energy Transition written by Daniel Rich and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-07-11 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Solar energy is considered by many an attractive and practical option for America's energy future, one that is technically and commercially feasible as well as socially and environmentally desirable. Sun-generated power could meet upwards of 20 percent of U.S. energy needs by the year 2000—but only if there is a concerted national effort to use this energy option. The issues of implementation and the public and private initiatives needed to facilitate a transition to extensive use of solar energy are the focus of this volume. The solar transition is addressed from the diverse perspectives of the many necessary participants: industries and small businesses; local, state, regional, and federal governments; public utilities; policy analysts; and solar advocates. The contributors assess the extent to which solar alternatives can replace and augment other energy forms, the pace and pattern for solar commercialization, and the roles of public and private institutions in carrying out the transition. A consensus becomes apparent: Although the transition to solar energy is technically and commercially viable, its success depends on concerted public and private efforts to promote innovation and diversification in energy production and distribution and to institute major changes in public policy related to energy use.

Book Employment Effects of the Renewable Energy Transition in the Electricity Sector

Download or read book Employment Effects of the Renewable Energy Transition in the Electricity Sector written by Martin Černý and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The employment impacts of the transition to a post-carbon economy are gaining increasing attention. The post-carbon transition implies fundamental changes in the economy followed by significant changes in the structure of labour demand. Industries with the highest carbon footprint are of utmost importance because of the large expected changes in supply chain structures forced by decarbonisation. The power industry is a crucial component of the transition since its decarbonisation can also help other sectors (such as transportation) switch to cleaner energy fuels. Renewable energy sources are promising technologies that could significantly help foster transition in the energy sector and to provide energy with almost zero greenhouse gas emissions. Restructuring away from fossil fuels will bring about associated job losses in non-renewable energy sectors together with job gains in the renewable energy ones. Building energy infrastructure with a significantly higher share of renewables will also require significant capital investments in new facilities, possibly further fostering employment. Understanding the overall net effects on employment (i.e. job gains vs. job losses) would help inform transition policies in order to design policies guided not only by environment and climate but also by social considerations. To estimate the net effects on employment related to the increasing share of renewable energy, we develop a forward-looking multi-regional input-output model that takes into account the labour demand associated with capital investments in renewable energy infrastructure, separately from operation and maintenance. Modelling capital formation separately allows for a more precise assessment of the changes in labour demand needed to deal with the transition and can better inform related adaptation policies. The modelling consists of gradually replacing the production of electricity from non-renewable energy sources with production from renewables by comparing the effects of two scenarios in five-year intervals until 2050. The model focuses on changes in the European Union (EU) plus the United Kingdom (UK) and shows the net effects on the number of jobs by skill level (low-, medium- and high-skilled) and gender, by industry group and by country.

Book Putting Renewables to Work

Download or read book Putting Renewables to Work written by Daniel M. Kammen and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 2008-11 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The New Apollo Energy Project, by coordinating public and private policies and investments, provides the vision for a cleaner, domestically-based, and more secure 21st century energy system. This report provides an invaluable comparison of the many recent studies that show how a shift towards clean energy technologies will result in significant job creation. These studies confirm that supporting renewable and efficient energy systems will create more American jobs than would a comparable investment in traditional fossil fuel based systems. Moreover, an investment agenda in emerging clean energy technologies would also reduce our foreign trade deficit and reestablish the U.S. as a leader in this growing international market. Book Employment from Solar Energy

Download or read book Employment from Solar Energy written by and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The current state of knowledge about employment impacts of solar versus conventional technologies is used to make quantitative and qualitative comparisons of these impacts across technologies. For purpose of quantitative comparison, employment requirements are standardized to employee effort per unit energy per year of operation. These current quantitative employment estimates show solar technology induced employment to generally be greater than for conventional technologies. The qualitative discussion focuses on the relative size and spatial distribution of the various technologies, concluding that the effects of solar are more positive than for conventional facilities because of smaller size, dispersed locations, and gradual implementation.

Book Employment Impacts of Selected Solar and Conventional Energy Systems

Download or read book Employment Impacts of Selected Solar and Conventional Energy Systems written by and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Preliminary comprehensive analyses of quantitative and qualitative employment effects of selected solar and conventional energy systems are presented. It proposes a framework for analyzing the direct, indirect, induced, displacement, disposable income, and qualitative employment effects of alternative energy systems. The analyses examine current research findings on these effects for a variety of solar and conventional energy sources and compare expected employment impacts. In general, solar energy systems have higher direct and indirect employment requirements than do conventional energy systems. In addition, employment displaced from conventional sources and employment effects due to changes in consumers' disposable income are highly significant variables in net employment comparisons. Analyses of the size and location of projected energy developments suggest that dispersed solar energy systems have a more beneficial impact on host communities than do large conventional facilities, regardless of the relative magnitude of employment per unit of energy output.

Book The Solar Economy

Download or read book The Solar Economy written by Hermann Scheer and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-06-17 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The global economy and our way of life are based on the exploitation of fossil fuels, which not only threaten massive environmental and social disruption through global warming but, at present rates of consumption, will run out within decades, causing huge industrial dislocation and economic collapse. Even before then, the conflicts it causes in the Middle East and elsewhere will be frighteningly exacerbated. The alternative exists: renewable energy from renewable sources - above all, solar. Substituting renewable for fossil resources will take a new industrial revolution to avert the worst of the damage and establish a new international order. It can be done, and it can be done in time. The Solar Economy, by one of the world's most effective analysts and advocates, lays out the blueprints, showing how the political, economic and technological challenges can be met using indigenous, renewable and universally available resources, and the enormous opportunities and benefits that will flow from doing so.

Book Charged Up Distributional Impacts of Green Energy on Local Labor Markets

Download or read book Charged Up Distributional Impacts of Green Energy on Local Labor Markets written by H. Ron Chan and published by . This book was released on 2023 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper studies the overall and distributional effects of the green energy transition on local labor markets in the United States from 2005 to 2019. Utilizing exogenous solar and wind potentials derived from remote sensing data, we identify the causal impact of the expansion in solar and wind energy. Our findings reveal that the growth in solar and wind capacity has led to a modest but significant increase in employment and labor force participation, with solar energy also contributing to wage growth. The most substantial benefits, in terms of job opportunities and wage increases, are observed among younger, lower-educated, non-Hispanic white workers. We also observe a surge in employment in greener occupations, particularly in the manufacturing sector. Our results suggest that these effects are driven by an increase in jobs and business establishments in manufacturing sectors, accompanied by a reduction in government transfers across various welfare programs.
