Book The Employee Retirement Income Security Act of 1974

Download or read book The Employee Retirement Income Security Act of 1974 written by James Wooten and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2005-01-24 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study of the Employee Retirement Income Security Act of 1974 (ERISA) explains in detail how public officials in the executive branch and Congress overcame strong opposition from business and organized labor to pass landmark legislation regulating employer-sponsored retirement and health plans. Before Congress passed ERISA, federal law gave employers and unions great discretion in the design and operation of employee benefit plans. Most importantly, firms and unions could and often did establish pension plans that placed employees at great risk for not receiving any retirement benefits. In the early 1960s, officials in the executive branch proposed a number of regulatory initiatives to protect employees, but business groups and most labor unions objected to the key proposals. Faced with opposition from powerful interest groups, legislative entrepreneurs in Congress, chiefly New York Republican senator Jacob K. Javits, took the case for pension reform directly to voters by publicizing frightening statistics and "horror stories" about pension plans. This deft and successful effort to mobilize the media and public opinion overwhelmed the business community and organized labor and persuaded Javits's colleagues in Congress to support comprehensive pension reform legislation. The enactment of ERISA in September 1974 recast federal policy for private pension plans by making worker security an overriding objective of federal law.

Book Information Security and Employee Behaviour

Download or read book Information Security and Employee Behaviour written by Angus McIlwraith and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2016-05-23 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research suggests that between 60-75% of all information security incidents are the result of a lack of knowledge and/or understanding amongst an organization's own staff. And yet the great majority of money spent protecting systems is focused on creating technical defences against external threats. Angus McIlwraith's book explains how corporate culture affects perceptions of risk and information security, and how this in turn affects employee behaviour. He then provides a pragmatic approach for educating and training employees in information security and explains how different metrics can be used to assess awareness and behaviour. Information security awareness will always be an ongoing struggle against complacency, problems associated with new systems and technology, and the challenge of other more glamorous and often short term priorities. Information Security and Employee Behaviour will help you develop the capability and culture that will enable your organization to avoid or reduce the impact of unwanted security breaches.

Book Employment Security

Download or read book Employment Security written by Paul Loseby and published by Praeger. This book was released on 1992-08-21 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Employment security is under pressure in public and private sectors because of fluctuating economic conditions and unstable markets. According to Loseby, the proponents of employment security have been lacking in substantive evidence justifying its existence. The majority of big business explicitly displays its disbelief in the practice through employee lay-off at first sign of economic adversity. Lay-offs are shown to create and prolong a number of socio-economic problems for society. Lack of employment affects personal ego, personal and family stress, and self-identity, as well as financial and economic factors associated with basic needs and success. The analyses of data provides focus on intangible and difficult-to-identify criteria such as employee morale and company loyalty. Productivity and financial ratios are also identified, analyzed, and compared. The author continues to review recommended and widely used strategies. Strengths and weaknesses are analyzed and compared, and successful national and global application of strategies are cited. The evolving corporation of the twenty-first century is reviewed to discern its needs, and to determine applicability of employment security to public or private enterprise. The book will be of interest to executives and all levels of management, human resource executives and personnel staff, in addition to professors of management and their students.

As organizations turn to technology to monitor employee use of network resources, they are finding themselves at odds with workers who instinctively feel their privacy is being invaded. The Visible Employee reports the results of an extensive four-year research project, covering a range of security solutions for at-risk organizations as well as the perceptions and attitudes of employees toward monitoring and surveillance. The result is a wake-up call for business owners, managers, and IT staff, as well as an eye-opening dose of reality for employees.
