Book Production Economics A Dual Approach to Theory and Applications

Download or read book Production Economics A Dual Approach to Theory and Applications written by Melvyn Fuss and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2014-06-28 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contributions to Economic Analysis: Production Economics: A Dual Approach to Theory and Applications, Volume 2 focuses on the theory of production from the standpoint of the "dual", the relationships between economic observables which are dual to physical technology. The selection first ponders on duality, intermediate inputs and value-added, Hicks' aggregation theorem and the existence of a real value-added function, and homotheticity and real value-added in Canadian manufacturing. Discussions focus on real value-added and the production structure, estimation of the production structure, double deflation and real value-added, measurement of total productivity, and duality between direct and conditional indirect utility functions. The book then examines the estimation techniques for the elasticity of substitution and other production parameters and measurement of the elasticity of factor substitution and bias of technical change. The publication takes a look at the identification of technical change in the electricity generating industry, factor substitution in electricity generation, and the effectiveness of rate-of-return regulation. Topics include statistical tests of regulatory effectiveness, profit function for a regulated firm, tests of the structure of technology, identification problems in the measurement of technical change, and measurement of disembodied technical change. The selection is a valuable source of information for economists and researchers interested in production economics.

Book Price Effects in Input Output Relations A Theoretical and Empirical Study for the Netherlands 1949 1967

Download or read book Price Effects in Input Output Relations A Theoretical and Empirical Study for the Netherlands 1949 1967 written by P. M. C. de Boer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 153 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 1.1. Pre Ziminary remarks Input-output analysis is one of the most extensively used tools of economic science. It has been introduced by Leontief (1941) who assumed that inputs into a production process of a particular sector of economic activity is a constant fraction of the output of that process in physicaZ terms. National account statisticians, however, record the inputs and outputs of sectors of economic activity in money flows. If those flows were voZumes (evalu ated at constant prices, pertaining to a certain base year) they could represent the physical amounts Leontief dealt with. Then, the Leontief assumption turns into constancy of ratios of volumes of inputs to volumes of output. For an over view of (traditional) input-output analysis we refer to section 4.1.1. In practice, however, input-output tables in volumes are seldom available; since as a rule they are expressed in monetary vaZues (i.e. evaluated at current prices). In that case one generally assumes that the ratios between inputs (in value terms) and outputs (in value terms) are constant. In appendix B to chapter 4 we prove that the two variants described above can be couched in terms of the (neo-classical) theory of costs subject to a production function.

Book The Input Relationship Between Co Authors in Economics

Download or read book The Input Relationship Between Co Authors in Economics written by Marshall H. Medoff and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study addresses the question of what the relative input relationship is between co-authors in economics. Using the direct addilog production function, the partial elasticities of substitution between co-authors are estimated. The empirical results suggest that co-authors in economics are equivalent substitutes in production. The empirical results are robust whether the direct addilog production is estimated using each co-author's research capital stock, depreciated research capital stock, impact-adjusted research capital stock, or depreciated impact-adjusted research capital stock.

Book On the Substitution of Private and Public Capital in Production

Download or read book On the Substitution of Private and Public Capital in Production written by Zidong An and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2019-11-01 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most macroeconomic models assume that aggregate output is generated by a specification for the production function with total physical capital as a key input. Implicitly this assumes that private and public capital stocks are perfect substitutes. In this paper we test this assumption by estimating a nested-CES production function whereas the two types of capital are considered separately along with labor as inputs. The estimation is based on our newly developed dataset on public and private capital stocks for 151 countries over a period of 1960-2014 consistent with Penn World Table version 9. We find evidence against perfect substitutability between public and private capital, especially for emerging and LIDCs, with the point estimate of the elasticity of substitution estimated closely around 3.

Book Production Economics An Empirical Approach

Download or read book Production Economics An Empirical Approach written by Charles Britt Moss and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2022-02-25 with total page 576 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Production economics is that branch of microeconomics that examines producer decisions. This book focuses on the empirical estimation of these relationships using primal, dual, and differential specifications. The primal specification models production decisions based on the production function — estimation of the input/output relationship and the derivation of optimization behavior from this technical relationship. The dual approach estimates production decisions using economic information such as input and output prices. The textbook then develops the linkages between these relationships. The differential specification is an alternative approach derived from changes in the first-order conditions from cost minimizing behavior. In each case, the theoretical development is followed by different empirical specifications that can be used to estimate the producer's choice.

Book Estimating Elasticities of Input Substitution Using Data Envelopment Analysis

Download or read book Estimating Elasticities of Input Substitution Using Data Envelopment Analysis written by Noah James Miller and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The use of elasticities of substitution between inputs has become the standard method for addressing the effect of a change in the mix of input used for production from a technological or cost standpoint. (Chambers 1988) A researcher that wants to estimate this elasticity, or some other comparative static, typically would do so using parametric production or cost function (e.g. translog or normalized quadratic) with panel data. For a study with only cross-sectional data, the construction of such a function may be problematic. Using a dual approach, a nonparametric alternative in such a situation may be the use of Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA). Cooper et al. (2000) provided a methodology for estimating elasticities of substitution for the technical production problem using DEA. To our knowledge, this has not been extended to the cost efficiency problem, which would be equivalent to estimating Allen partial or Morishima elasticities of substitution between inputs using a cost function (or cost minimization framework). The purpose of this thesis is to show how elasticities of substitution can be derived and estimated for the technical production and cost (overall economic) efficiency DEA under variable returns to scale. In addition, an empirical example using Kansas Farm Management Association (KFMA) data is presented to illustrate the estimation of these elasticities. The results showed that input substitutability is relatively limited at the enterprise level.

Book Input Substitutability and Cross Country Variation in Sectoral Linkages

Download or read book Input Substitutability and Cross Country Variation in Sectoral Linkages written by Rishabh Sinha and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using panel data on input-output intensities and expenditure prices from 28 countries, this paper finds the elasticity of substitution across sectoral inputs to be less than one in each of the three broad sectors of the economy. Intermediates are most complementary in the production of services while it is easiest to substitute across intermediates in the production of agricultural goods. Differences in relative prices alone account for a non-trivial fraction of the cross-country variation in sectoral linkages. Abstracting from the price channel that allows for substitution across inputs in response to changes in relative prices delivers biased aggregate implications of changes in productivity and distortions.
