Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here is a classic collection from one of America’s greatest authors. Though these short stories have universal appeal, they are intensely local in setting. With the exception of “Turn About,” which derives from the time of the First World War, all these tales unfold in a small town in Mississippi, William Faulkner’s birthplace and lifelong home. Some stories—such as “A Rose for Emily,” “The Hound,” and “That Evening Sun”—are famous, displaying an uncanny blend of the homely and the horrifying. But others, though less well known, are equally colorful and characteristic. The gently nostalgic “Delta Autumn” provides a striking contrast to “Dry September” and “Barn Burning,” which are intensely dramatic. As the editor, Saxe Commins, states in his illuminating Foreword: “These eight stories reflect the deep love and loathing, the tenderness and contempt, the identification and repudiation William Faulkner has felt for the traditions and the way of life of his own portion of the world.”

Book excerpt: For the first time, the true story of "The Yellow Rose of Texas" is told in full, revealing a host of new insights and perspectives on one of America's most popular stories. For generations, the Yellow Rose of Texas has been one of America's most popular western myths, growing larger over time and little resembling the truth of what happened on April 21, 1836, at the battle of San Jacinto, where a new Texas Republic won its independence. The woman who has been popularly connected to the story was an ordinary but also quite remarkable free black woman from the North, Emily D. West. This work reconstructs her experience, places it in full context and explores the evolution of a most fanciful myth.

Download or read book Yielded in His Hands written by Emily Rose Massey and published by Electio Publishing. This book was released on 2015-02-12 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jeremiah Chapter 18 and Psalm 40 liken God to the Great Potter of our lives, molding us and shaping us according to His perfect plan. Emily Rose Massey shares her testimony of how the Lord delivered her out of the filth and bondage of sexual sin and into the glorious light of His saving grace. When she set her feet firmly on the foundation of Jesus Christ and allowed God to chisel away parts of her marred heart with His Spirit and Word, He was able to mold her into a beautiful vessel fit for His use. But this only happened when she yielded her life absolutely to Jesus and truly made Him Lord of her life. Using the steps a potter takes to complete a masterpiece made of clay as the structure of her testimony, the reader is afforded a glimpse into the life of the author, whose transparency and honesty provide a view of her journey from brokenness to beauty, through the strength and power of Jesus Christ.
Download or read book The Function of Imagery and Symbolism Used by William Faulkner in A Rose for Emily written by Daria Poklad and published by . This book was released on 2016-10-14 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2009 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 1,3, language: English, abstract: William Faulkner's short story A Rose for Emily is often regarded as a "story of horror," with gothic elements due to its creepy and shocking final scene. Moreover, different themes such as the loss of beloved ones, isolation and the refusal to accept change are covered in this story. There is also a variety of popular readings of A Rose for Emily emphasizing "the conflict between the North and the South" or "the conflict between individual and the community, between the past and the present, between men and women." The question is of how the author depicts such complexity of character, emotion and setting? Faulkner himself said that "in a short story [...] almost every word has got to be almost exactly right" (Petry 54). As a result almost every word in a short story has a greater meaning, which is achieved using imagery and symbolism. Imagery is the representation of experiences of the senses, which uses descriptive, but also figurative language, whereas symbolism is used by "writers to invest objects, actions or ideas with a symbolic meaning." The symbols convey special meanings to the reader, standing for one single idea or many. This paper will analyze the function and use of imagery and symbolism in A Rose for Emily focusing on the functions of the house, how the picture of Emily is drawn, the function of the town, the characterization of the men in the protagonists life, then the aspect of time and finally the attempt to analyze the symbol of the rose in the title trying to reveal a much imagery and symbolic meaning as possible. It will be shown, that a Rose for Emily is complex and rich in imagery, symbolism and ambiguity used by Faulkner to characterize people, describe relations and atmosphere."
