Book Dense Metal Plasma in a Solenoid for Ion Beam Neutralization

Download or read book Dense Metal Plasma in a Solenoid for Ion Beam Neutralization written by and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Space-charge neutralization is required to compress and focus a pulsed, high-current ion beam on a target for warm dense matter physics or heavy ion fusion experiments. We described approaches to produce dense plasma in and near the final focusing solenoid through which the ion beam travels, thereby providing an opportunity for the beam to acquire the necessary space-charge compensating electrons. Among the options are plasma injection from pulsed vacuum arc sources located outside the solenoid, and using a high current (> 4 kA) pulsed vacuum arc plasma from a ring cathode near the edge of the solenoid. The plasma distribution is characterized by photographic means, by an array of movable Langmuir probes, by a small single probe, and by evaluating Stark broadening of the Balmer H beta spectral line. In the main approach described here, the plasma is produced at several cathode spots distributed azimuthally on the ring cathode. It is shown that the plasma is essentially hollow, as determined by the structure of the magnetic field, though the plasma density exceeds 1014 cm-3 in practically all zones of the solenoid volume if the ring electrode is placed a few centimeters off the center of the solenoid. The plasma is non-uniform and fluctuating, however, since its density exceeds the ion beam density it is believed that this approach could provide a practical solution to the space charge neutralization challenge.

Book Effect of the Electrostatic Plasma Lens on the Emittance of Ahigh current Heavy Ion Beam

Download or read book Effect of the Electrostatic Plasma Lens on the Emittance of Ahigh current Heavy Ion Beam written by and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We describe measurements we have made of the emittance of a high-current, moderate-energy ion beam after transport through a permanent-magnet electrostatic plasma lens. The results indicate the absence of emittance growth due to the lens, when the lens is adjusted for optimal beam focusing. The measured emittance for a 16 keV Cu{sup 2+} ion beam formed by a vacuum arc ion source was about 0.4 [pi] · mm · mrad at a beam current of 50 mA rising more-or-less linearly to 1.5 [pi] · mm · mrad at 250 mA, and was conserved in beam transport through the lens. These results have significance for the application of high-current ion sources and the electrostatic plasma lens to particle accelerator injection.

Book Experimental Investigations of Plasma Lens Focusing and Plasma Channel Transport of Heavy Ion Beams

Download or read book Experimental Investigations of Plasma Lens Focusing and Plasma Channel Transport of Heavy Ion Beams written by and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 3 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Final focusing of ion beams and propagation in a reactor chamber are crucial questions for heavy ion beam driven Fusion. An alternative solution to ballistic quadrupole focusing, as it is proposed in most reactor studies today, is the utilization of the magnetic field produced by a high current plasma discharge. This plasma lens focusing concept relaxes the requirements for low emittance and energy spread of the driver beam significantly and allows to separate the issues of focusing, which can be accomplished outside the reactor chamber, and of beam transport inside the reactor. For focusing a tapered wall-stabilized discharge is proposed, a concept successfully demonstrated at GSI, Germany. For beam transport a laser pre-ionized channel can be used.

Book High Current Heavy Ion Beams in the Electrostatic Plasmalens

Download or read book High Current Heavy Ion Beams in the Electrostatic Plasmalens written by and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We describe applications of the electrostatic plasma lens for manipulating and focusing moderate energy, high current, broad, heavy ion beams. Use of a plasma lens in this way has been successfully demonstrated in a series of experiments carried out collaboratively between IP NASU (Kiev) and LBNL (Berkeley) in recent years. Here we briefly review the plasma lens fundamentals, peculiarities of focusing heavy ion beams, and summarize some recent developments (experiments, computer simulations, theory). We show that there is a very narrow range of low magnetic field for which the optical properties of the lens improve markedly. This opens up some attractive possibilities for the development of a new-generation compact lens based on permanent magnets. Preliminary experimental results obtained at Kiev and Berkeley on the operation of a permanent magnet plasma lens for manipulating wide aperture high-current heavy ion beams are presented and summarized.

Book Plasma Instabilities and Compensation of the Space Charge of an Ion Beam

Download or read book Plasma Instabilities and Compensation of the Space Charge of an Ion Beam written by M. V. Nezlin and published by . This book was released on 1970 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Intense ion beams in magnetic fields, employed in such work as isotope separation and injection into plasma mirror machines are investigated experimentally to determine the beam intensity levels at which beam instabilities arise. A review of the work in this field is given. Detailed analysis of the most important processes include the discussion of the generation of plasma oscillations in a cold plasma inter penetrated by fast ion beams, the instabilities in the ion source plasma and amplification of oscillation in a cold plasma by ion beam oscillations. The criteria for instability growth, amplification and interaction coupling are discussed and examples quoted. The proposed methods of improved compensation of the space charge of the ion beam are based on the conclusion that three step instability behavior is basic to the system considered by the author. These include reduction in the oscillation amplitude in the ion source, reduction of the coefficient of growth of instability in the ion beam by redesigning the beam optics, and finally, the reduction of secondary plasma oscillations. Book Confinement of Laser Plasma by Solenoidal Field for Laser Ion Source

Download or read book Confinement of Laser Plasma by Solenoidal Field for Laser Ion Source written by and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A laser ion source can provide high current, highly charged ions with a simple structure. However, it was not easy to control the ion pulse width. To provide a longer ion beam pulse, the plasma drift length, which is the distance between laser target and extraction point, has to be extended and as a result the plasma is diluted severely. Previously, we applied a solenoid field to prevent reduction of ion density at the extraction point. Although a current enhancement by a solenoid field was observed, plasma behavior after a solenoid magnet was unclear because plasma behavior can be different from usual ion beam dynamics. We measured a transverse ion distribution along the beam axis to understand plasma motion in the presence of a solenoid field.

Book J C Martin on Pulsed Power

Download or read book J C Martin on Pulsed Power written by T.H. Martin and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 541 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As indicated in the Foreword to this series on Advances in Pulsed Power Technologies, the pioneering roots of modern pulsed power as related by J.C. "Charlie" Martin and his co-workers of the Atomic Weapons Research Establishment, Aldermaston, Reading UK is an important if not essential record of the experiential history of the major developer of pulsed power advances during the post-World War II period. It finds great utility as an instructive accounting of the trials, tribulations and, finally, an almost chronological walk through their thoughts as they diligently and happily travel the yellow brick road to success. It is recounted in the inimitable style of "Charlie" Martin as only he can relate, with some insightful perspectives by Mike Good man, a constant companion, and collaborator who shares his unique view of "Charlie" and the Aldermaston Group. This collection of selected articles is unique, for in large part, the documentation of their struggle and final triumph have not been formerly published in any archival manner. One reason, we suspect, was the defense-related application and significance of their work, compounded by the constant need for progress which did not allow for the time consuming preparation of formal submission to the literature. This also explains the "urgent" and sometimes terse manner of their writings. Yet the material remains remarkably current because we are dealing, in large measure, with pulsed systems less sensitive to those factors involved in slower pulsed scenarios.

Book Mechatronic Systems Design

Download or read book Mechatronic Systems Design written by Klaus Janschek and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-09-18 with total page 815 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this textbook, fundamental methods for model-based design of mechatronic systems are presented in a systematic, comprehensive form. The method framework presented here comprises domain-neutral methods for modeling and performance analysis: multi-domain modeling (energy/port/signal-based), simulation (ODE/DAE/hybrid systems), robust control methods, stochastic dynamic analysis, and quantitative evaluation of designs using system budgets. The model framework is composed of analytical dynamic models for important physical and technical domains of realization of mechatronic functions, such as multibody dynamics, digital information processing and electromechanical transducers. Building on the modeling concept of a technology-independent generic mechatronic transducer, concrete formulations for electrostatic, piezoelectric, electromagnetic, and electrodynamic transducers are presented. More than 50 fully worked out design examples clearly illustrate these methods and concepts and enable independent study of the material.

Book Electromagnetic Acoustic Transducers

Download or read book Electromagnetic Acoustic Transducers written by Masahiko Hirao and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-10-25 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This second edition provides comprehensive information on electromagnetic acoustic transducers (EMATs), from the theory and physical principles of EMATs to the construction of systems and their applications to scientific and industrial ultrasonic measurements on materials. The original version has been complemented with selected ideas on ultrasonic measurement that have emerged since the first edition was released. The book is divided into four parts: PART I offers a self-contained description of the basic elements of coupling mechanisms along with the practical designing of EMATs for various purposes. Several implementations to compensate for EMATs’ low transfer efficiency are provided, along with useful tips on how to make an EMAT. PART II describes the principle of electromagnetic acoustic resonance (EMAR), which makes the most of EMATs’ contactless nature and is the most successful amplification mechanism for precise measurements of velocity and attenuation. PART III applies EMAR to studying physical acoustics. New measurements have emerged with regard to four major subjects: in situ monitoring of dislocation behavior, determination of anisotropic elastic constants, pointwise elasticity mapping (RUM), and acoustic nonlinearity evolution. PART IV deals with a variety of individual issues encountered in industrial applications, for which the EMATs are believed to be the best solutions. This is proven by a number of field applications.
