Book Stock Price Synchronicity and Analyst Coverage in Emerging Markets

Download or read book Stock Price Synchronicity and Analyst Coverage in Emerging Markets written by Allaudeen Hameed and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper examines the relationship between the stock price synchronicity and analyst activity in emerging markets. Contrary to conventional wisdom that suggests that security analysts specialize in the production of firm-specific information, we find that the security analysts predominantly produce market-wide information. Using the R-square statistics of the market model as a measure of the synchronicity of stock price movements, we find that more analyst coverage leads to an increase in stock price synchronicity. Furthermore, after controlling for the influence of firm size on the lead-lag relation, we find that returns on high analyst-following portfolio lead returns on low analyst-following portfolio more than vice versa. We also find that the aggregate changes in the earnings forecast of high analyst-following portfolio affect the aggregate returns of the portfolio itself as well as the the low analyst-following portfolio while the aggregate changes in the earnings forecasts of low analyst-following portfolio have no predictive ability. Finally, when the forecast dispersion is high, the effect of analyst coverage on stock price synchronicity is reduced.

Book Home Biased Analysts in Emerging Markets

Download or read book Home Biased Analysts in Emerging Markets written by Sandy Lai and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 45 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We find that local analyst recommendations are systematically more optimistic than foreign analyst recommendations in emerging markets. The effects of this novel quot;home biasquot; among local analysts overwhelm any information asymmetry between foreign and local analysts. Consequently, local analyst upgrades underperform foreign analyst upgrades, while local analyst downgrades outperform foreign analyst downgrades. Neither foreign investors, local institutions, nor retail investors appear to be fully cognizant of this bias. Trade reactions suggest that foreign investors overestimate the bias in foreign analyst recommendations while local institutions underestimate the bias in local analyst recommendations. These results are pervasive across countries, time periods, and stock groupings, and can be traced to investment banking pressure.

Book Frontier Emerging Equity Markets Securities Price Behavior and Valuation

Download or read book Frontier Emerging Equity Markets Securities Price Behavior and Valuation written by Oliver S. Kratz and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-08-28 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Frontier Emerging Equity Markets Securities Price Behavior and Valuation uses the Russian example to illustrate the intricate mechanics of frontier emerging equity market analysis. Frontier markets are those equity markets that do not benefit from the same degree of securities transparency and information dissemination as future emerging markets. In many cases, frontier equity markets are those which have been created almost literally overnight, without the infrastructure and institutional readiness of the nations in which they are located. During the 1990s, frontier emerging markets have formed a new investment asset class which requires a very different set of valuation metrics from mature emerging markets. In developing a multi-stage approach to the understanding and valuing of such markets, this book uses the case of the Russian frontier equity market to illustrate topics such as the relationship between equity market infrastructure and valuation during the `genesis' period of an emerging financial market; evolving market efficiency; and the crucial role of depository receipt programs in the development of these markets. Further, this book develops the first comprehensive framework for valuing a frontier equity market. The role of equity risk premium, as it affects early dynamic equity valuation, is also covered in order to illuminate important drivers of securities price performance. The book closes by discussing the philology of the frontier market valuation debate, in which every market participant is an important purveyor of information and a contributor to the final valuation dimension of equities. The main asset used to present the empirical concepts is a complete research database drawn from actual frontier market investing, which previously had been unavailable to academic researchers. As an active institutional asset management professional at a major Wall Street investment firm, the author marries academic theories, such as market efficiency and market segmentation, to the real world of high stakes and high risk frontier market investing. This book illustrates the applicability and, in some cases, the uselessness of financial theory when applied to this new and rising asset class. It opens the discussion of equity valuation theory for an environment where many conventional rules of asset price determination need to be rewritten. As the first research-level monograph exclusively dedicated to frontier emerging equity market analysis, it offers a unique dual perspective on how academic financial research finds it a complementary and sometimes antagonistic counterpart of real-life investment decision-making. This book can help both professional investors and students of finance to understand frontier equity market valuation and development.

Book Analyst Coverage Network and Stock Return Comovement in Emerging Markets

Download or read book Analyst Coverage Network and Stock Return Comovement in Emerging Markets written by Francisco Marcet and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 59 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract This paper shows that analyst coverage networks (ACN) play an important role in explaining stock return commonalities across Latin American stocks. First, pairs of stocks connected by analysts exhibit higher comovement and excess comovement. Second, firms easily traded by foreign investors are more strongly affected by common coverage. Third, international analysts are an important source of across-country excess comovement. Finally, by creating the network at the brokerage house level and exploiting exogenous changes in ACN around the MSCI LATAM Index reviews, this study addresses endogeneity concerns related to the effect of ACN on commonalities.
