Book Drive to Survive

Download or read book Drive to Survive written by Chris Daly and published by Fire Engineering Books. This book was released on 2020-03-12 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drive to Survive: The Art of Wheeling the Rig provides an in-depth examination of fire apparatus vehicle dynamics. This is not your average “driver training” textbook. Fire apparatus operators must understand how a vehicle maneuvers at roadway speed, and more importantly…why does it crash? Just as a doctor cannot heal the human body without a thorough understanding of anatomy and physiology, an emergency vehicle operator cannot safely drive a fire apparatus without an in-depth knowledge of vehicle dynamics. Drive to Survive goes beyond talking about pump operations, aerial operations, and preventative maintenance; it fills in the gaps between vehicle dynamics and crash causation. After 15 years of training and research, Chris Daly developed a training program combining his fire service and crash reconstruction training experience. This book provides an in-depth knowledge of topics required in the following NFPA standards: --NFPA 1002 “Standard for Fire Apparatus Driver/Operator Professional Qualifications” --NFPA 1451 “Standard for Fire and Emergency Service Vehicle Operations Training Programs” --NFPA 1500 “Standard on Fire Department Occupational Health and Safety Program” Fire apparatus operators will learn the limits of driving an emergency vehicle and will understand that no matter how long they have been driving or how good they think they are, at some point physics will take over and the vehicle will lose control. We can reduce the number of emergency vehicle crashes throughout the world by addressing key issues and providing emergency vehicle operations course (EVOC) instructors with methods to convey these concepts. Concepts you learn in this book relate to more than just driving a fire apparatus. These principles apply to anyone who drives a vehicle, including your family members and loved ones.

This chapter instructs officers as to how to prepare in the event a lawsuit is initiated, providing clear-cut guidelines for testifying at trials and depositions. Risk Management: This chapter provides a framework for installing an agency-wide, vehicle operation Risk Management Program. All book material is policy driven, in the context of an agency’s own policy. You train using this book, and you train to your own policy. A Policy Worksheet Appendix provides an invaluable, step-by-step walk-through to help ensure a complete understanding of the material. A Glossary enables officers to understand vehicular jargon and all related terminology. A complete Index makes using the book quick and easy. Book excerpt: This manual is a resource for those who develop and present police training courses for driving a police vehicle in routine and emergency situations in California. The goals of the EVOC (Emergency Vehicle Operations Course) Instructor Training Course are to increase the knowledge and abilities of instructors who present driver training courses in California and standardize this training throughout the State. Successful completion of this course provides expertise and instructor qualification. Following an introduction/orientation, the manual outlines the major sections of the 40-hour curriculum. Four hours are devoted to defensive driving factors; the student will be instructed in the causes and classification of emergency vehicle accidents and techniques for avoiding collisions. Four hours address vehicle operations factors; students will learn the concepts of vehicle dynamics, vehicle control techniques, braking, and roadway position. Three hours cover emergency driving factors; students will be instructed in the legal and liability issues pertinent to emergency response driving, pursuit driving, and pursuit guidelines. Twenty-four hours are spent on practical application exercises; students will develop proficiency and techniques required to complete selected driving exercises, including steering, reverse driving, vehicle control, braking in a turn, skid recovery, and various pursuit driving exercises. Two hours are devoted to course management components; students learn the process of training site selection, safety considerations, obtaining equipment, scheduling training and instructors, planning for contingencies, and ensuring proper student to instructor ratios. One hour is spent on course critique and evaluation. For each component of the curriculum, this manual provides information on materials needed, the learning goals, course description, instruction procedures and methods, and testing methods.
