  • Pages : 310 pages

Download or read book The Good Fight written by Peter Beinart and published by Melbourne Univ. Publishing. This book was released on 2007 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than six years after the September 11 attacks, the close friendship forged between George W. Bush and John Howard remains. But in their nations more broadly, the common purpose has withered, drained by the sense that both men have failed the moral and intellectual challenges of that day. In this powerful and provocative book, Peter Beinart offers a new liberal vision, based on principles liberals too often forget: that America's greatness cannot simply be asserted, it must be proved. That American leadership is not American empire. And that liberalism cannot merely define itself against the right, but must fervently oppose the totalitarianism that stalks the Islamic world today. Peter Beinart's The Good Fight is a passionate rejoinder to the conservatives who have ruled Washington since 9/11. Beinart argues that America can again embrace the creed that brought it greatness in the past, but only if liberals remember that democracy begins at home. Above all, it is a call for liberals to revive the spirit that once swept America, and inspired the world.

Book excerpt: With over 140 countries fielding nation-state and rouge malious cyber hacking capabilities, it is critical that we are aware of threats and vulnerabilities. Adm. Michael Rogers, director of the National Security Agency warned Congress regarding cyber attacks, “It’s only a matter of the ‘when,’ not the ‘if,’ that we are going to see something dramatic.” Cyber Blackout is a warning. It is a chronicle of the cyber threats of which we find ourselves at risk every day. Our power supply is vulnerable. Our food supply. Even the basics of communication. Every facet of our national security is vulnerable to cyber threats, and we are not prepared to defend them all. Cyber Blackout explains how these threats have been building since the Cold War, how they affect us now, and how they are changing the concepts of war and peace as we know them. It is essential knowledge for anyone wishing to understand safety and security in the age of the fifth domain. www.cyberblackout.net

Book Striking First

Download or read book Striking First written by B. Glad and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-04-30 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How have the September 11th terrorist attacks and the subsequent U.S. led war on terrorism impacted American foreign policy at home and abroad? The consistent theme throughout this collection of essays is that September 11th was a watershed event, which sparked a redefinition and reassessment of U.S. foreign policy, governmental institutions, and the public's sense of internal and external security. The Bush Administration's endeavor to remake American foreign policy with an emphasis on a preemptive, first strike doctrine and its attempt to build an internal security apparatus are not only consequential in the war on terrorism, such efforts are challenging the very fundamentals of American political life and its perception throughout the world.

Book Democracide

    Book Details:
  • Author : Nathaniel Gilbert
  • Publisher : AuthorHouse
  • Release : 2006
  • ISBN : 1425959229
  • Pages : 602 pages

Download or read book Democracide written by Nathaniel Gilbert and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2006 with total page 602 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Democracide tells how the government is killing our democracy by using crime, terrorism and Mid-East wars as an excuse to curtain our freedoms and deconstruct the Constitution. This book reveals how Washington has focused our attention on foreign wars to hide our real problems at home--crime, illicit drugs, poverty, immigration, the outsourcing of jobs, irresponsible corporate governance, the wage gap, inadequate healthcare and substandard public education. Underlying these problems is the development of a criminological culture based on violence, guns and "winning" at all costs. By becoming a crisis factory and self-appointed world policeman, the U.S. has lost thousands of American lives, brought the government to the edge of bankruptcy and earned the hatred of millions abroad. Unlike moment-to-moment news bulletins or magazine articles and books focused on a single subject, Democracide pulls all these developments together coherently so that readers can connect the dots and see how the web of power is endangering America. Most important, Democracide tells what we can do to save our democracy, restore our traditional liberties and bring back government integrity--without amending the Constitution or revolution.

Book U S Education Reform and National Security

Download or read book U S Education Reform and National Security written by Joel I. Klein and published by Council on Foreign Relations. This book was released on 2014-05-14 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The United States' failure to educate its students leaves them unprepared to compete and threatens the country's ability to thrive in a global economy and maintain its leadership role. This report notes that while the United States invests more in K-12 public education than many other developed countries, its students are ill prepared to compete with their global peers. According to the results of the 2009 Program for International Student Assessment (PISA), an international assessment that measures the performance of 15-year-olds in reading, mathematics, and science every three years, U.S. students rank fourteenth in reading, twenty-fifth in math, and seventeenth in science compared to students in other industrialized countries. The lack of preparedness poses threats on five national security fronts: economic growth and competitiveness, physical safety, intellectual property, U.S. global awareness, and U.S. unity and cohesion, says the report. Too many young people are not employable in an increasingly high-skilled and global economy, and too many are not qualified to join the military because they are physically unfit, have criminal records, or have an inadequate level of education. The report proposes three overarching policy recommendations: implement educational expectations and assessments in subjects vital to protecting national security; make structural changes to provide students with good choices; and, launch a "national security readiness audit" to hold schools and policymakers accountable for results and to raise public awareness.
