Download or read book Emergency Laughter written by Mike Cyra and published by Mike Cyra. This book was released on 2015-01-11 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mike Cyra takes us on another hilarious grand tour of the strange medical humor in the real-life world of emergency medicine and surgery. Whether he's assisting trauma surgeons who are singing “Take me out to the ballgame” while removing a well-placed iconic symbol of America’s greatest pasttime, learning how fast he can run after being shot at by an angry couple who called for an ambulance, working with a prankster-loving urologist who demonstrates how bladder problems were diagnosed before modern urinalysis, or screaming like a little girl while doing night rounds with a dead flashlight on a psychiatric ward, Cyra’s comedic style of storytelling will make your cheeks sore. Emergency Laughter: Stories of Humor Inside Ambulances and Operating Rooms shows why most health care professionals have such a twisted sense of humor and how critical laughter is to the survival of both patient and care giver. This is the second book in the Emergency Laughter Series.

Download or read book Taking Laughter Seriously written by John Morreall and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 1983-06-30 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "There has never been a time in Western history that humor and laughter were not topics of intellectual debate and interest. That is still true. John Morreall's broad-ranging concerns in Taking Laughter Seriouslymake it a book that will interest those in the social and behavioral sciences, philosophy, English literature and criticism, drama, and folklore. Morreall has done an admirable job of analyzing earlier theories. His discussions of humor as aesthetic experience, social lubricant, and valuable human feature are original and provocative." -- Jeffrey H. Goldstein, Professor of Psychology, Temple University "The attempt at providing a theoretical framework which will include all forms of laughter and humor and will accommodate the main types of theories previously advanced, is the principal thrust and success ofTaking Laughter Seriously. The topic is important and is one which philosophers have tended to ignore, as have most disciplines. It needs periodic philosophical reflection. The book is clearly written, well organized, and well illustrated. Morreall's style, sometimes almost conversational, fits the subject matter. One would hope that a book on laughter and humor, even a scholarly one, would not be so ponderous and officious that it evidenced little relationship to its announced topic. Taking Laughter Seriously avoids that contradiction and strikes a good balance." -- Conrad Hyers, Professor of Religion, Gustavus Adolphus College, author of The Comic Vision and the Christian Faith. "The book's qualities are, first, its scope and persuasiveness. The whole book demonstrates the seriousness of humor and its central place in human life. I know of no comparable work. The second quality of Taking Laughter Seriously is its clarity and its engaging style. It knocks out previous theories of laughter (including Freud's) and replaces them with a comprehensive one of its own. It is bloody funny. It will be enjoyed by philosophers, psychologists, teachers, and anyone who can read." -- G. J. Barker-Benfield, Associate Professor of History, State University of New York at Albany

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Frank E. Burdett is a survivor from seriousness. This is no laughing matter and only needs a simple explanation. Frank decided to divorce himself from all seriousness in an effort to gain control of his sense of humour. Once he attained his sense of humour he realised that the amount of absurdity and nonsense that abounds in society can only be diagnosed, in the gentlest of terms, as over-seriousness of epidemic proportions. Frank has researched and evaluated the importance of nurturing your sense of humour in order to balance the well-being of people everywhere, especially against the high degrees of stress, both emotional and work-associated challenges that attack everyone today. He came to the conclusion that people of all persuasions have completely lost the knack of being able to step aside and have a good and free laugh at themselves. Therefore, the time has come for you to learn to laugh at yourself and live longer! Frank knows the effects of harrowing trauma, being attacked, mauled and carried away by a man-eating tiger and, curing himself of spreading melanoma cancer of the neck/shoulder, both lungs, liver and bowel cancer. He had been diagnosed by orthodox medicine as stage IV and given six months to live. He tuned to find an alternative cure. He has now been four years free of cancer. Frank devised a technique whereby, even you, can benefit and learn to laugh at yourself. You have nothing to lose, except your overpowering seriousness. Frank spent three years delving into the properties of laughing at yourself and he soon realised that there is more to laughing than showing a set of teeth. Laughing at yourself allows you the complete freedom to see stress and serious-ness in their proper light, as a threat to your long-lasting happiness. This is your opportunity to take a real look at yourself by using Franks technique to step on the path towards learning the Art of Happiness. You either want to be free from the pangs of stress and seriousness, or you do not! Your choice!

Download or read book Emergency written by Mark Brown, MD and published by Villard. This book was released on 2013-05-15 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Long before the hit TV show E.R., emergency room doctor Mark Brown decided that the world just had to know about real life in a hospital's E.R. The emergency room is a cauldron of human emotions. The anguish, fear, need, and gore is wearing. As the protective layer of the self is weakened, the pain seeps through and begins to stain the soul. The protective layer grows thicker. But the patients’ needs call out to a sensitive heart, and a balance is struck. Survival in this place requires a deep kindness nestled in a very dark sense of humor, and a strong faith tempered with cynicism. The people who work in this place refer to it as the Pit. What follows is a collection of true stories from all over the country about what the ER doors bring. These stories are irreverent, funny, horrifying, and heartbreaking. They will buffet you. These stories are presented randomly, not neatly categorized as one might desire but in the disorderly manner in which the doors might bring them. They are written not by writers and reporters but in the words of the doctors, nurses, and paramedics who were there.—From the Introduction

Download or read book Laugh And Learn Project Management written by Dr. Hare Krishna Chandrasekaran and published by Pustaka Digital Media. This book was released on 2022-05-23 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Projects succeed-projects fail. This is because there is no definite formula for success in any project. When attempting to do something, be it a small task, an assignment or innovation, a set procedure has to be followed. In a project, the number of factors involved are far too many, and it is always a complex situation. If due care is not given to the project, it fails. The definition of failure varies with perspective. However, three factors stand out: cost overrun, time overrun and the original intentions of the project being lost en route. With finality, we can say that these factors fit in snugly in IT projects. It is particularly apt in a project, if the client who originally mooted the proposal says, “This is not what I wanted”. This is the tune sung by many IT clients and almost always, they are justified. Project failure is a multi-headed dragon which may take any shape it wants. It can be a spaceship for Mars crashing into the ocean, or the Titanic, ramming onto an iceberg; an airport ending up as big as a city, or a road project hitting a huge roadblock. It can be a cathedral, half-finished, or a hydro-electric project ending up with lakhs of displaced families. With big projects, the chances of failure are higher. There are projects with outlays of even billions of dollars. Thus, failure of space missions is understandable. Strangely, construction of a simple park also has failed sometimes.

Download or read book Make Em Laugh written by Steve Allen and published by Prometheus Books. This book was released on 2013-05-24 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The success of Steve Allen's How To Be Funny led first to the republication of that book, and now occasioned a companion volume, Make 'Em Laugh. This new how-to book about the art of comedy includes an even richer assortment of examples of the author's unique humor. In Make 'Em Laugh, Allen laces his formal instruction with hilarious ad-libs, written jokes, TV comedy sketches, satires, song parodies, humorous essays, amusing autobiographical reminiscences, one-act plays, witty speeches, and stand-up monologues from his comedy concerts. Noel Coward called Steve Allen the most talented man in America, and he is probably the most borrowed-from comedian of all time. The perceptive reader will recognize many of the comic ideas that Allen originated during the "Golden Age" of television comedy - ideas that are still influential in the 1990's. If there were a college course in creating and performing comedy, Make 'Em Laugh would be the ideal textbook.
