This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 413 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Legumes include many very important crop plants that contribute critical protein to the diets of many around the world. Many important forages and green manure crops are legumes. Legumes are also large contributors to the vegetable oil and animal feed protein sectors. One characteristic of legumes that could become even more important as world energy sources decline and nitrogen fertilizer prices increase is nitrogen fixation, something few other plants can do. Thus legumes have a unique and important niche in agriculture. While some of the small seeded forage legumes have been relatively easy to work with in tissue culture as far as culture initiation, plant regeneration and transformation are concerned, most large seeded legumes, like soybean, have been recalcitrant. Today, however, many laboratories are inserting genes into soybean and producing unique plants for both commercial and scientific uses. These advancements have taken a large amount of research effort and still require time and labour.

Download or read book Neglected and Underutilized Crops written by Muhammad Farooq and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2022-11-29 with total page 842 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Neglected and Underutilized Crops: Future Smart Food explores future food crops with climate resilience potential. Sections cover their botany, nutritional significance, global distribution, production technology, and tolerance to biotic and abiotic stresses of neglected and underutilized crops. By simply changing species in a crop rotation system, the cycle of some pests and diseases is disrupted and probabilities of infestations are reduced. Finally, the book provides case studies that highlight where the adaptation of crops to local environments, especially with regard to climate change, have been successful. These crops can help make agricultural production systems more resilient to climate change. Although a few books on neglected and underutilized crops are available, this comprehensive book covers the full scope of crop husbandry, nutritional significance and global distribution. - Contains consistent coverage of botany, nutritional significance, production technology, and tolerance to biotic and abiotic stresses - Presents case studies of success stories where adaptations in local environments have made a difference, especially with climate change - Addresses key opportunities for improving global food security

Download or read book Plant Tissue Culture and Moelcular Markers written by Ashwani Kumar and published by I. K. International Pvt Ltd. This book was released on 2009 with total page 687 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Plant tissue culture techniques help in understanding basic life processes, which is essential to improving crop productivity. Furthermore, recently molecular biology has assumed great importance with respect to plant biotechnology. This book combines all three aspects into one with a focus on practical applications of various techniques. It discusses micropropagation studies on several crop plants, the molecular basis of understanding various life processes including the molecular basis of somatic embryogenesis, and other physiological and biochemical processes having significant biotechnological applications. It also covers in vitro studies of certain important plants like Aloe vera, Simmondsia chinensis, Anacyclus pyrethrum and Crataeva nurvala, Arachis hypogaea L., Phoenix dactylifera, Dendrocalamus asper, Asparagus adescendens Roxb., natural products of plant origin with their therapeutic potential and biotechnological production, as well as genome analysis of crop plants with future applications in biotechnology.
