There North and South, Latin and Anglo, native Carib, African black, French and English white races and cultures meet. In a religious melting pot, Protestant and Catholic Christian, Afro-Caribbean, Hindu, and secularist faiths, intertwine, cross-pollinate, and go their ways, separate yet together, in the divine milieu. Such a place has a rich and revealing story to tell: of history, nature, and humanity; of the understanding of freedom; of the meaning and scope of theology itself. The key in Caribbean society, with its experiences of slavery, colonialism, neocolonialism, and structural dependence, is emancipation: the pursuit, proclamation, and practice of human freedom. Emancipation is the key to Caribbean theology as well. This is the focal point of Kortright Davis's work. He introduces the complex tapestry of this unique society: its social and cultural pluralism, its particular strengths and weaknesses: poverty, dependence, alienation, and divisiveness. Davis explores many aspects of Caribbean religion and spirituality, especially the complexities of carnival and its uniquely African soul. He notes too a theological dependency, and posits again a unique, Caribbean emancipatory theology to establish a theological self-reliance. In emancipatory theology, as in Latin American liberation theology, the source for praxis and reflection is faith linked to historical experience. And the Caribbean experience, of continual struggle for identity, distinguishes and yet unites Caribbean Christians with Christians everywhere.

Book excerpt: For 4 million slaves, emancipation was a liberation and resurrection story of biblical proportion, both the clearest example of God's intervention in human history and a sign of the end of days. In this book, Matthew Harper demonstrates how black southerners' theology, in particular their understanding of the end times, influenced nearly every major economic and political decision they made in the aftermath of emancipation. From considering what demands to make in early Reconstruction to deciding whether or not to migrate west, African American Protestants consistently inserted themselves into biblical narratives as a way of seeing the importance of their own struggle in God's greater plan for humanity. Phrases like "jubilee," "Zion," "valley of dry bones," and the "New Jerusalem" in black-authored political documents invoked different stories from the Bible to argue for different political strategies. This study offers new ways of understanding the intersections between black political and religious thought of this era. Until now, scholarship on black religion has not highlighted how pervasive or contested these beliefs were. This narrative, however, tracks how these ideas governed particular political moments as African Americans sought to define and defend their freedom in the forty years following emancipation.

Black theology in this time produced both conservative and radical political agendas and set the terms for political debates within African-American communities. This project makes their rich, diverse, and at times confusing religious thought intelligible to the twenty-first-century reader and demonstrates the weight of those theological ideas on the ground in particular places and particular times. The branch of their theology that located them within a divine plan for the race--their eschatology--gave black political leaders more hope and confidence than a mere secular reading of their circumstances could justify. The dissertation focuses on one southern state, North Carolina, to reveal the importance of black theology to local and statewide political issues: emancipation and Reconstruction, migration and black land ownership, temperance and prohibition, and disfranchisement and segregation.
