Book Extensional Viscosity of Dilute Polymer Solutions

Download or read book Extensional Viscosity of Dilute Polymer Solutions written by Jin Huang and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to obtain reliable extensional viscosity measurements for dilute polymer solutions using a filament-stretching rheometer at the University of Toronto. Initial extensional measurements of two Newtonian fluids gave data very close to the expected values, which validated the experimental technique. Three dilute solutions of high-molecular-weight polystyrene in oligomeric styrene and the M1 fluid, were then tested. For the least viscous fluid, high strains were achieved and a steady-state Trouton ratio of about 900 was obtained, at all Deborah numbers. For the more viscous liquids, high strains were not achieved because the fluid filaments detached from their holders. Reasonable agreement was obtained in the data comparisons with MIT and Monash University using similar test techniques and the same fluids. The fact that the steady-state value of SM-1 was independent of the extensional rate suggests that this value could be used as a material property for SM-1.

Book Advances in Fluid Mechanics Measurements

Download or read book Advances in Fluid Mechanics Measurements written by MOHAMED GAD-EL-HAK and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-08 with total page 611 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One cannot overemphasize the importance of studying fluids in motion or at rest for a variety of scientific and engineering endeavors. Fluid mechanics as an art reaches back into antiquity, but its rational formulation is a relatively recent undertaking. Much of the physics of a particular flow situation can be understood by conducting appropriate experiments. Flow visualization techniques offer a useful tool to establish an overall picture of a flow field and to delineate broadly its salient features before embarking on more detailed quantitative measurements. Among the single-point measurements that are particularly difficult are those in separated flows, non-Newtonian fluids, rotating flows, and nuclear aerosols. Pressure, shear stress, vorticity, and heat transfer coefficient are also difficult quantities to measure, particularly for time-dependent flows. These and other special situations are among the topics covered in this volume. Each article emphasizes the development of a particular measuring technique. The topics covered were chosen because of their importance to the field, recent appeal, and potential for future development. The articles are comprehensive and coverage is pedagogical with a bias towards recent developments.

Book Constitutive Equations for Polymer Melts and Solutions

Download or read book Constitutive Equations for Polymer Melts and Solutions written by Ronald G. Larson and published by Butterworth-Heinemann. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 381 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Constitutive Equations for Polymer Melts and Solutions presents a description of important constitutive equations for stress and birefringence in polymer melts, as well as in dilute and concentrated solutions of flexible and rigid polymers, and in liquid crystalline materials. The book serves as an introduction and guide to constitutive equations, and to molecular and phenomenological theories of polymer motion and flow. The chapters in the text discuss topics on the flow phenomena commonly associated with viscoelasticity; fundamental elementary models for understanding the rheology of melts, solutions of flexible polymers, and advanced constitutive equations; melts and concentrated solutions of flexible polymer; and the rheological properties of real liquid crystal polymers. Chemical engineers and physicists will find the text very useful.
