Book excerpt: Published to accompany the first major UK survey exhibition of artist duo Elmgreen and Dragset, featuring a newly commissioned large-scale installation designed specifically for the gallery space. Since 1995, artists Michael Elmgreen (b. 1961, Copenhagen) and Ingar Dragset (b. 1969, Trondheim) have been producing a body of work at the intersection of art, design and architecture, drawing on subjects as diverse as social politics, personal relationships and institutional critique. In their installations and sculptures they consistently interrogate ideas around public and private space and individual and collective identity, reconfiguring the everyday with subversive wit and tongue-in-cheek melancholy. Amongst their best-known works are Prada Marfa (2005), a full scale replica of a Prada Boutique in the Texan desert; Powerless Structures, Fig. 101 (2012), a giant bronze boy on a rocking horse created for The Fourth Plinth in London's Trafalgar Square; and Death of a Collector (2009) for the Venice Biennale, featuring a life size swimming pool complete with a besuited floating body. In this, their first major UK exhibition, they will transform the galleries; creating a brand new, large-scale installation designed specifically for this exhibition space, and constructing a series of shrine-like tableaux featuring their hyper-realistic figures. Book excerpt: The first site-specific outdoor public sculpture ever to be commissioned for the United States from Anselm Kiefer (b. 1945) was unveiled in 2019 at the top of Rockefeller Center's Channel Gardens, facing Fifth Avenue. Titled 'Uraeus', the work consists of a gigantic open book with eagle's wings 30 feet in span, both made of lead, on top of a 20-foot-tall lead-clad stainless steel column. Clustered around the base of the column are further outsize lead books, while a large snake coils up the column. Lead is one of the artist's preferred materials for its soft, fluid properties traditionally associated with alchemical transformation, especially its second stage: dissolution. In Kiefer's mind alchemy is a symbol for the artist you have to destroy and then recreate. Uraeus extends his vocabulary of striking mythic forms, presented at an arresting new scale. It explores longtime motifs in his work that, in this context and contemporary moment, resonate in powerful new ways. Kiefer is the most prominent German artist of the generation born in or shortly after World War II, a figure of international standing who was recently awarded the J. Paul Getty Medal (2017).

Book excerpt: Sexuality and gender have long been influential in understanding the construction of domestic space, its meanings, often revealing a binary division of private and public, female and male. By reconstructing the foundation of queer critiques of space and by analyzing the representation of domesticity in contemporary art and architecture, Unplanned Visitors shows the blurring of private and public that can occur in any domestic space and explores the potential of queer theory for understanding, and designing, the built environment. Olivier Vallerand investigates how queer critiques, building on pioneering feminist work, question the relation between identity and architecture and highlight normative constructs underlying domestic spaces. He draws out a genealogy of queer space in theoretical discourse in architecture, studying projects by Mark Robbins, Joel Sanders, J Mayer H, Elmgreen & Dragset, Andrés Jaque, and MYCKET, among others. These works blur the traditional borders between architecture and art to emphasize the tensions between private and public and their impact on assumptions about domestic space and family structure. The challenges in moving from experimental installations to built environments suggest how designers must acknowledge and respond to the social contexts that shape architecture, rethinking how domestic spaces can be designed to allow everyone to better manage the expression of their self-identification through their living environments. Unplanned Visitors poses a challenge to traditional architectural theory and history, but also suggests a renewed and more inclusive ethics whereby designers explicitly address social and political power structures. The potential of a queer approach to architectural design, history, theory, and education is precisely to enact a method that creates more inclusive buildings and safer neighbourhoods for everyone.
