Book Listening to Confraternities

Download or read book Listening to Confraternities written by Tess Knighton and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2024-11-20 with total page 583 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Listening to Confraternities offers new perspectives on the contribution of guild and devotional confraternities to the urban phonosphere based on original research and an interdisciplinary approach. Historians of art, architecture, culture, sound, music and the senses consider the ways in which, through their devotional practices, confraternities acted as patrons of music, created their identity through sound and were involved in the everyday musical experience of major cities in early modern Europe. Confraternities have been studied from many different angles, but only rarely as acoustic communities that communicated through sound and whose musical activities delimited the urban spaces in which they were active. Contributors: Nicholas Terpstra, Emanuela Vai, Ana López Suero, Henry Drummond, Ascensión Mazuela-Anguita, Ferrán Escrivà-Llorca, Noel O’Regan, Magnus Williamson, Xavier Torres Sans, Erika Honisch, Alexander Fisher, Konrad Eisenbichler, Daniele Filippi, Dylan Reid, Elisa Lessa, Antonio Ruiz Caballero, Juan Ruiz Jiménez, Sergi González González, and Tess Knighton.

Book C dols in New York

Download or read book C dols in New York written by Antonio Beneyto and published by InteliNet/InteliBooks. This book was released on 2003 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A flaneur is a a streetwise observer, a stroller, someone who rambles through a city without apparent purpose but feels tuned to the place and is constantly searching for adventure, aesthetic and erotic. In Codols in New York, the Spanish writer Antonio Beneyto has created a protagonist, a persona of Beneyto himself, with a perspective reminiscent of the fin-de-siecle viewpoint of Baudelaire's French dandy and the obsessed Breton's surrealist flaneur. A passionate observer, whose immense pleasure is to take up residence in multiplicity, Beneyto's flaneur feels at home in the crowd and finds himself at the center of everything in the city. His flaneur, like a rolling stone, enters into the multitude as into an immense reservoir of electricity. New York suits him well. He immerses himself in the waves of the New York's crowds, gathers impressions and records in words and drawings his sightings and experiences. Ordinary beings, urban sites and events rise to a myriad of versions of the city. Beneyto takes pleasure everywhere. Antonio Beneyto, who visited New York for long periods in the1980s and the mid-1990s, wandered through the streets and avenues, into parts of New York virtually unkown to visitors and indeed to many newyorkers. We meet street vendors, hookers, tourists, businessmen, musicians and all kind of peculiar characters, including Woody Allen. All are subjected to the artist's scrutinity, to his sharp pen. Beneyto visits caf?s, night clubs, parks, shoeshops, pubs, taverns, restaurants, museums, monuments, bookstores, providing gossip and background to each site. But his Codols is much more than an amusing kaleidoscope of the New York scene and the encounter with the unusual. His wild poetic vignettes are testimonies of the inner human drama of the American society.

Download or read book Life without Lead written by Daniel Renfrew and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2018-09-04 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Life without Lead examines the social, political, and environmental dimensions of a devastating lead poisoning epidemic. Drawing from a political ecology of health perspective, the book situates the Uruguayan lead contamination crisis in relation to neoliberal reform, globalization, and the resurgence of the political Left in Latin America. The author traces the rise of an environmental social justice movement, and the local and transnational circulation of environmental ideologies and contested science. Through fine-grained ethnographic analysis, this book shows how combating contamination intersected with class politics, explores the relationship of lead poisoning to poverty, and debates the best way to identify and manage an unprecedented local environmental health problem.

Book Quechua de Huar s en Espa ol e Ingl s Glosario

Download or read book Quechua de Huar s en Espa ol e Ingl s Glosario written by Menandra Mosquera and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2012-11-30 with total page 678 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This glossary has been prepared in order to leave a record of the Quechua spoken by the people of Huarás and surrounding areas in the mid-20th century. Huarás, capital of the Region (Department) of Ancash, Peru, has a distinct form of Quechua. That dialect was endangered due to a massive earthquake on May 31, 1970. Tens of thousands of people died, and the city was destroyed. Many of the survivors left the area. Once rebuilt, Huarás was repopulated with people new to the area who use Spanish or a different dialect to communicate. Since then, technological influences such as the Internet also reinforce the use of Spanish, to the detriment of the local Quechua. Born in Huarás, I was raised in a bilingual environment, Spanish and Quechua. Although I left the area to attend the university, I could always feel at home upon returning, until that earthquake. Since then it seems strange to return to an unfamiliar city, due to people, language and environment. I hope this glossary will help the newer generations better understand, not only their grandparents and ancestors, but the culture from which they come. Language and culture are intimately tied, and much more than words is lost when a language dies. The Inca Empire (Tahuantinsuyo) was invaded by Spain in 1532. At that time Quechua was spoken, never written, throughout the Inca civilization, with many dialects. Since then, the Spanish language has been imposed, but in Huarás never did it replace Quechua to the extent that it did in 1970. This glossary contains words, several verb forms, and phrases. It is written with the expectation that it may help to preserve the inherited Quechua, so that Huarás may remain bilingual. It is written for huarasinos, the people of Huarás. If others find it useful, better yet. The glossary is in Quechua. To facilitate access to the Quechua, indices in Spanish and in English are included. M. Mosquera
