Book Elliptic Marching Methods and Domain Decomposition

Download or read book Elliptic Marching Methods and Domain Decomposition written by Patrick J. Roache and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1995-06-29 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the first things a student of partial differential equations learns is that it is impossible to solve elliptic equations by spatial marching. This new book describes how to do exactly that, providing a powerful tool for solving problems in fluid dynamics, heat transfer, electrostatics, and other fields characterized by discretized partial differential equations. Elliptic Marching Methods and Domain Decomposition demonstrates how to handle numerical instabilities (i.e., limitations on the size of the problem) that appear when one tries to solve these discretized equations with marching methods. The book also shows how marching methods can be superior to multigrid and pre-conditioned conjugate gradient (PCG) methods, particularly when used in the context of multiprocessor parallel computers. Techniques for using domain decomposition together with marching methods are detailed, clearly illustrating the benefits of these techniques for applications in engineering, applied mathematics, and the physical sciences.

Book Towards an Unified Theory of Domain Decomposition Algorithms for Elliptic Problems Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2016-10-20 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Towards an Unified Theory of Domain Decomposition Algorithms for Elliptic Problems The paper is organized as follows. After introducing two elliptic model problems and certain finite element methods in Section 2, we begin Section 3 by reviewing Schwarz's alternating algorithm in its classical setting. Following Sobolev [50] and P. L. Lions we indicate how this algorithm can be expressed in a variational form. Since this formulation is very convenient for the analysis of finite element problems, we work in this Hilbert space setting throughout the paper. This book was released on 2015-07-28 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Domain Decomposition Algorithms for Indefinite Elliptic Problems Iterative methods for the linear systems of algebraic equations arising from elliptic finite element problems are considered. Methods previously known to work well for positive definite, symmetric problems are extended to certain nonsymmetric problems, which also can have some eigenvalues in the left half plane. We first consider an additive Schwarz method applied to linear, second order, symmetric or nonsymmetric, indefinite elliptic boundary value problems in two and three dimensions. An alternative linear system, which has the same solution as the original problem, is derived and this system is then solved by using GMRES, an iterative method of conjugate gradient type. In each iteration step, a coarse mesh finite element problem and a number of local problems are solved on small, overlapping subregions into which the original region is subdivided. We show that the rate of convergence is independent of the number of degrees of freedom and the number of local problems if the coarse mesh is fine enough. The performance of the method is illustrated by results of several numerical experiments. We also consider two other iterative method for solving the same class of elliptic problems in two dimensions. Using an observation of Dryja and Widlund, we show that the rate of convergence of certain iterative substructuring methods deteriorates only quite slowly when the local problems increase in size. A similar result is established for Yserentant shierarchical basis method. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Dirichlet Dirichlet Domain Decomposition Methods for Elliptic Problems

This book was released on 2014-12-31 with total page 492 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Domain decomposition (DD) methods provide powerful tools for constructing parallel numerical solution algorithms for large scale systems of algebraic equations arising from the discretization of partial differential equations. These methods are well-established and belong to a fast developing area. In this volume, the reader will find a brief historical overview, the basic results of the general theory of domain and space decomposition methods as well as the description and analysis of practical DD algorithms for parallel computing. It is typical to find in this volume that most of the presented DD solvers belong to the family of fast algorithms, where each component is efficient with respect to the arithmetical work. Readers will discover new analysis results for both the well-known basic DD solvers and some DD methods recently devised by the authors, e.g., for elliptic problems with varying chaotically piecewise constant orthotropism without restrictions on the finite aspect ratios. The hp finite element discretizations, in particular, by spectral elements of elliptic equations are given significant attention in current research and applications. This volume is the first to feature all components of Dirichlet-Dirichlet-type DD solvers for hp discretizations devised as numerical procedures which result in DD solvers that are almost optimal with respect to the computational work. The most important DD solvers are presented in the matrix/vector form algorithms that are convenient for practical use.

Book Domain Decomposition Methods for Discontinuous Galerkin Approximations of Elliptic Problems

Download or read book Domain Decomposition Methods for Discontinuous Galerkin Approximations of Elliptic Problems written by Craig Dwain Collins and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The application of the techniques of domain decomposition to construct effective preconditioners for systems generated by standard methods such as finite difference or finite element methods has been well-researched in the past few decades. However, results concerning the application of these techniques to systems created by the discontinuous Galerkin method (DG) are much more rare. This dissertation represents the effort to extend the study of two-level nonoverlapping and overlapping additive Schwarz methods for DG discretizations of second- and fourth-order elliptic partial differential equations. In particular, the general Schwarz framework is used to find theoretical bounds for the condition numbers of the preconditioned systems corresponding to both the nonoverlapping and overlapping additive Schwarz methods. In addition, the impact on the performance of the preconditioners caused by varying the penalty parameters inherent to DG methods is investigated. Another topic of investigation is the choice of course subspace made for the two-level Schwarz methods. The results of in-depth computational experiments performed to validate and study various aspects of the theory are presented. In addition, the design and implementation of the methods are discussed.
