This book was released on 2022-11-07 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about the author's mother, Ellen Florence Nedland, as the designer of her son Stan's life as a forensic scientist. The story really goes back to June 14, 1928, when Mother Ellen's son, Stan, was born in Barron, Wisconsin (Mother Ellen's only child). Mother Ellen was probably the single most important factor in her son', Stan, later becoming a forensic scientist. Mother Ellen started her son reading books at an early age and in early grades. This was a process that continued through grade school and later high school. Mother Ellen would cut out little strips of colored paper to resemble bookends. As Stan finished a book, Mother Ellen pasted it (colored strip) on a sheet of paper as both a record and further reading encouragement. Reading books thereby became an important part of Stan's life. Stan started with author Mark Twain and his stories Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn. Stan then moved on to the author Arthur Conan Doyle and the Adventures of Sherlock Holmes as a solver of crimes through science and chemistry and microscopy. The Sherlock Holmes series of stores stirred Stan's interest in what would later become his lifetime occupation as a forensic scientist, who handled a thousand cases and testified in the various courts (criminal and civil, federal, state, military, territorial, Canadian, and even a case in Japan).Mother Ellen also gave Stan (while a child) Christmas presents such as chemistry sets, and erector sets to further stimulate his interest in the sciences. Stan often says that "whatever has been his lifetime achievements, he owes most to his mother Ellen. Any failures are his own!"

Download or read book The Forgetting written by David Shenk and published by Anchor. This book was released on 2003-05-20 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NATIONAL BESTSELLER A powerfully engaging, scrupulously researched, and deeply empathetic narrative of the history of Alzheimer’s disease, how it affects us, and the search for a cure. Afflicting nearly half of all people over the age of 85, Alzheimer’s disease kills nearly 100,000 Americans a year as it insidiously robs them of their memory and wreaks havoc on the lives of their loved ones. It was once minimized and misunderstood as forgetfulness in the elderly, but Alzheimer’s is now at the forefront of many medical and scientific agendas, for as the world’s population ages, the disease will touch the lives of virtually everyone. David Shenk movingly captures the disease’s impact on its victims and their families, and he looks back through history, explaining how Alzheimer’s most likely afflicted such figures as Jonathan Swift, Ralph Waldo Emerson, and Willem de Kooning. The result is a searing and graceful account of Alzheimer’s disease, offering a sobering, compassionate, and ultimately encouraging portrait.
Download or read book The Mind Has Mountains written by Paul R. McHugh and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2006-01-10 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From strenuous opposition to physician-assisted suicide to a conviction that sex-correction surgery for newborns is cruel and misguided, Dr. Paul R. McHugh's opinions are strong and often controversial. In this collection of essays, McHugh demonstrates why he is one of the most thought-provoking figures in the academic world. These pieces argue for a realistic appraisal of just what psychiatrists know and how they know it, with the aim of indicating how such knowledge can best be used not only for better patient care but also to reflect on and influence public issues and social movements. His essays will stimulate professional and popular discussion about the goals and effectiveness of current psychiatric practice. McHugh sorts through the layers of what he terms the "culturally driven misdirection of psychiatry and psychotherapy" to explain concepts often misunderstood by nonscholars and the intellectual community alike. America's leading psychiatrist may inspire you or offend you, but he will certainly make you think.

Download or read book Invisible Man written by Michal Raz-Russo and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 165 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By the mid-1940s. Gordon Parks had cemented his reputation as a successful photojournalist and magazine photographer, and Ralph Ellison was an established author working on his first novel, Invisible Man (1952), which would go on to become one of the most acclaimed books of the twentieth century. Less well known, however, is that their vision of racial injustices, coupled with a shared belief in the communicative power of photography, inspired collaboration on two important projects, in 1948 and 1952. Capitalizing on the growing popularity of the picture press, Parks and Ellison first joined forces on an essay titled "Harlem Is Nowhere" for '48: The Magazine of the Year. Conceived while Ellison was already three years into writing Invisible Man, this illustrated essay was centered on the Lafargue Clinic, the first nonsegregated psychiatric clinic in New York City, as a case study for the social and economic conditions in Harlem. He chose Parks to create the accompanying photographs, and during the winter months of 1948, the two roamed the streets of Harlem together, with Parks photographing under the guidance of Ellison's writing. In 1952 they worked together again, on "A Man Becomes Invisible", for the August 25 issue of Life magazine, which promoted Ellison's newly released novel. Invisible Man: Gordon Parks and Ralph Ellison in Harlem focuses on these two projects, neither of which was published as originally intended, and provides an in-depth look at the authors' shared vision of black life in America, with Harlem as its nerve center.
