Book Alzheimer s Disease in the Middle aged

Download or read book Alzheimer s Disease in the Middle aged written by Hyun Sil Jeong and published by Nova Publishers. This book was released on 2008 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dementia is a brain disorder that seriously affects a person's ability to carry out daily activities. The most common form of dementia among older people is Alzheimer's disease (AD), which involves the parts of the brain that control thought, memory, and language. Age is the most important known risk factor for AD. The number of people with the disease doubles every 5 years beyond age 65. AD is a slow disease, starting with mild memory problems and ending with severe brain damage. The course the disease takes and how fast changes occur vary from person to person. On average, AD patients live from 8 to 10 years after they are diagnosed, though the disease can last for as many as 20 years. Current research is aimed at understanding why AD occurs and who is at greatest risk of developing it, improving the accuracy of diagnosis and the ability to identify those at risk, discovering, developing, and testing new treatments, and discovering treatments for behavioral problems in patients with AD. This new book gathers state-of-the-art research from leading scientists throughout the world which offers important information on understanding the underlying causes and discovering the most effective treatments for Alzheimer's Disease.

Book Primary Progressive Multiple Sclerosis

Download or read book Primary Progressive Multiple Sclerosis written by M. Filippi and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Why are there no effective treatments for my condition? Why do researchers exclude patients with primary progressive multiple sclerosis from enrolling in clinical trials? Please let me know if you hear of studies that I might be allowed to enter or treatments that I could try for my condition. " Thus, in recent years, the sad lament of the patient with primary progressive MS (PPMS). This variant, often in the guise of a chronic progressive myelopathy or, less commonly, progressive cerebellar or bulbar dysfunction, usually responds poorly to corticosteroids and rarely seems to benefit to a significant degree from intensive immunosuppressive treatments. In recent years, most randomized clin ical trials have excluded PPMS patients on two counts. Clinical worsening devel ops slowly in PPMS and may not be recognized during the course of a 2-or 3-year trial even in untreated control patients. This factor alone adds to the potential for a type 2 error or, at the very least, inflates the sample size and duration of the trial. In addition, there is mounting evidence that progressive axonal degeneration and neuronal loss (rather than active, recurrent inflammation) may be important components of the pathology in this form of the disease. Although contemporary trials are evaluating whether PPMS patients may benefit from treatment with the ~-interferons and glatiramer acetate, preliminary, uncontrolled clinical experi ence suggests that the results may not be dramatic.

Book Italian Frescoes

    Book Details:
  • Author : Steffi Roettgen
  • Publisher :
  • Release : 1997-05-27
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 478 pages

Download or read book Italian Frescoes written by Steffi Roettgen and published by . This book was released on 1997-05-27 with total page 478 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Certain Italian fresco cycles, notably the Brancacci Chapel in Florence by Masaccio, Masolino, and Filippino Lippi, are well known. Others, such as Piero della Francesca's work in Arezzo and Benozzo Gozzoli's Chapel of the Magi in Florence, have been reproduced countless times. Yet no publisher - until now - has attempted to gather together and document in extensive photographs the essential fresco cycles of the early Italian Renaissance. The list of works covers the regions of Italy, from the Alpine mountain areas to Puglia, with an emphasis on Tuscany and Florence, the artistic center that gave life to the Renaissance. Italian Frescoes: The Early Renaissance, 1400-1470 opens with a concise introductory text discussing various aspects of fifteenth-century fresco painting: artists, patronage, cultural and historical conditions, technical methods, and questions of local tradition. The central section of the book examines twenty-one fresco cycles, each representing a crowning achievement in this field. A descriptive and interpretive essay introduces each cycle and is followed by a series of full-page and double-page color plates - many of them new photography of recently restored frescoes - covering the entire work.

Book Clinical Cases in Psychiatry

Download or read book Clinical Cases in Psychiatry written by Paolo Brambilla and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This case series book offers a practical and accessible approach to psychiatry, addressing major clinical problems ranging from psychosis to aging effects, each of which is tackled as it arises in everyday settings. With its emphasis on everyday practice strongly linked to underlying theory, the book combines clinical knowledge with the realities of managing clinical problems, and will provide a basis for developing sound analytical and confident decision-making skills. Presenting different visions of clinical psychiatry and expanding psychiatrists' interventions by integrating innovative neuroscience approaches such as neuroimaging, neuropsychology, TMS and cognitive rehabilitation, it will help clinicians and students alike gain a sound understanding of the wide range of signs and symptoms that indicate psychiatric disorders, and how the diagnosis, management and treatment options can differ from those in other medical specialties. The volume includes learning activities, with questions on each clinical case followed by detailed explanatory answers, and self-assessment exercises to assist with learning and revision. Throughout the book, tips and key features are highlighted with boxes, algorithms, tables and figures, which the reader can refer back to for exam revision and well into her/his career.

  • Author : Maria S. Guillem
  • Publisher : Frontiers Media SA

Download or read book Electrocardiographic Imaging written by Maria S. Guillem and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2020-04-17 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Electrical activity in the myocardium coordinates the contraction of the heart, and its knowledge could lead to a better understanding, diagnosis, and treatment of cardiac diseases. This electrical activity generates an electromagnetic field that propagates outside the heart and reaches the human torso surface, where it can be easily measured. Classical electrocardiography aims to interpret the 12-lead electrocardiogram (ECG) to determine cardiac activity and support the diagnosis of cardiac pathologies such as arrhythmias, altered activations, and ischemia. More recently, a higher number of leads is used to reconstruct a more detailed quantitative description of the electrical activity in the heart by solving the so-called inverse problem of electrocardiography. This technique is known as ECG imaging. Today, clinical applications of ECG imaging are showing promising results in guiding a variety of electrophysiological interventions such as catheter ablation of atrial fibrillation and ventricular tachycardia. However, in order to promote the adoption of ECG imaging in the routine clinical practice, further research is required regarding more accurate mathematical methods, further scientific validation under different preclinical scenarios and a more extensive clinical validation
