She begins with remarks about keeping a journal and includes copies of several letters written in 1841, while at school at Cousin Martha's, as a way of providing descriptions of earlier events. The letters include details about a camp meeting and a church fair. Diary entries begin February 6, 1845 and end March 15, 1846. She often writes weekly summaries. She writes of household activities, reading, visits with family and friends, church services, sermons and their Bible texts, tending plants in the "Fairy Bower," but very little about farming. There appears to be quite a lot of family nearby. She writes on April 29, of her 19th birthday.
