Book The First Book in United States History Classic Reprint

Download or read book The First Book in United States History Classic Reprint written by Waddy Thompson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-06 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The First Book in United States History The value of biography in teaching history to young pupils is well recognized. The personal, or human, element that this form of narration adds to the text arouses the interest that is essential to the study of history. Care should be taken, however, not to overemphasize biography lest the relative importance of the in dividual and the event be misunderstood and lest the historical connection between events be lost. The biographies furnished in' this text are abundant, and they have been selected because, taken together, they cover nearly all the events of the history of our country that the young pupil need know. Wherever biography is not available, or wherever it is advisable to emphasize the event rather than the individual or to preserve a closer connection between events, the author has resorted to the ordinary form of narration. In preparing the text he has used portions of his earlier work, A Primary History of the United States. When undertaken properly the study of history is not only very useful, but is a source of delight. If the pupil, in taking up the study for the first time, can see in it the wonderful story of people who have gone before him and builded that he might live the better, he will acquire a liking for history that will abide with him in after years. To give to the young people of America not only the advantages, but the pleasure, that may be found in the study of the history of their country is the purpose of the author. With the hope that his purpose will be fulfilled, this little book is sent forth on its mission. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Industrial History of the United States Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Industrial History of the United States Classic Reprint written by Katharine Coman and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-02 with total page 568 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Industrial History of the United States The history of the United States, more than that of any Old World country, is the record of physical achievement. The exploitation of virgin territory by a race of extraordinary intelligence, resource, and energy is the essential theme of our national history. Political events and social changes are conditioned on industrial evolution, and the story of America can be comprehended only in the light of her material aspirations and attainments. The advance of agriculture from the pioneer farm to the bonanza ranch, the expansion of manufactures consequent on the substitution of machinery and factory organization for the domestic handicrafts, the service rendered to commerce by steam, the telegraph, electricity, - these are the really potent factors in the history of the United States. The transformation on industrial organization from in indentured service to the trade union, from the self-employed artisan to the trust, from wild-cat banking to the national bank system, has more significance than the ups and downs of parties or the result of a presidential election. Political revolution and military undertakings cannot be ignored by the student of economic history. War must be treated not as picturesque by-play merely, but as a disastrous interruption on industrial progress. The financing of a war often introduces a disturbing factor in to the currency system, emergency taxes retard or promote business interest and furnish opportunity for special legislation, the alterations in the labor supply, while army life has a demoralizing influence on business habits. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Syllabus of United States History, 1492-1920 It is our own practice to present the main elements of the colonial period briefly in five or six lectures at the beginning of the year, and to enter a detailed discussion of the work with Chapter III of the Syllabus. We have found it, impossible to cover the whole of our history adequately in a year's course of three hours a week, and this distribution of emphasis permits us to bring the history of our own generation into its proper prominence. For those who prefer a different treatment, a detailed outline of the colonial period has been supplied. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2017-09-17 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The German Element in the War of American Independence The following pages make no pretension to original research. They are founded on the ad mirable monographs of Doctor Friedrich Kapp, for many years an honored member of the New York bar and now an active member of the Im perial Assembly of his native Germany. Dur ing his residence in the United States, Doctor Kapp made special studies in the history of the Germans in America, and especially of those whose names have passed into American history. The result was the lives of Steuben and Kalb, and the history of those unfortunate men whose blood was shed to gratify the avarice of their sovereign; one of the darkest chapters in the history of wicked rulers. From these sources I have drawn freely in preparing this new tribute to the history of my country. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Historical and Geographical Miscellany of the United States Fou many years I have taken pleasure in collecting fragments of information relating to the various peculiar features of United States History and Geography. Many of these facts, I believe, have never been in print. That the publication of these facts may be of special service and significance to the student and general reader, I have incorporated, by permission, considerable matter from other published works. In all such instances, I have drawn from absolutely reliable sources. It has been found practically impossible, within the scale of pages herein contained, to go into the details of every topic treated; and for this reason the reader is cited to authorities, Where he may find much of special interest for future reading.
