Book excerpt: Nations worldwide consider education an important tool for economic and social development, and the use of innovative strategies to prepare students for the acquisition of knowledge and skills is currently considered the most effective strategy for nurturing engaged, informed learners. In the last decade especially, European countries have promoted a series of revisions to their curricula and in the ways teachers are trained to put these into practice. Updating curriculum contents, pedagogical facilities (for example, computers in schools), and teaching and learning strategies should be seen as a routine task, since social and pedagogical needs change over time. Nevertheless, educational institutions and actors (educational departments, schools, teachers, and even students) normally tend to be committed to traditional practices. As a result of this resistance to change within educational systems, implementing educational innovation is a big challenge. The authors of the present volume have been involved with curriculum development since 2003. This work is an opportunity to present the results of more than a decade of research into experimental, inventive approaches to science education. Most chapters concern innovative strategies for the teaching and learning of new contents, as well as methods for learning to teach them at the pre-university school level. The research is focused on understanding the pedagogical issues around the process of innovation, and the findings are grounded in analyses of the limits and possibilities of teachers’ and students’ practices in schools.

Autor: Marie Curie (1867-1934), licenciada en Física y Matemáticas, se doctoró en 1903 con un estudio sobre las sustancias radiactivas que la hizo merecedora, junto a su marido Pierre Curie y Henri Becquerel, del Premio Nobel de Física de ese mismo año. Catedrática de Física en La Sorbona en 1906, recibió un segundo Premio Nobel en 1911, en esta ocasión de Química, por el descubrimiento del radio y el polonio. Junto a su eminente papel científico, su vida tuvo un importante sesgo público y se convirtió en uno de los rostros más célebres de la ciencia de principios del siglo xx. Colaboró activamente en mejorar la atención médica a los heridos en los campos de combate de la Primera Guerra Mundial, fundó en París y en su Varsovia natal instituciones científicas para el estudio de la radiactividad y recibió, sobre todo en sus últimos años, homenajes y reconocimientos de todo orden, incluido un viaje a los Estados Unidos en 1921. Sus restos reposan en el Panteón de París, con lo que se ha convertido en la primera mujer en recibir semejante honor. La introducción ha sido redactada por Xavier Roqué, profesor de Historia de la Ciencia de la Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona y especialista en la historia de la física del siglo xx, a la que ha dedicado trabajos y ediciones de textos sobre radiactividad, relatividad y mecánica cuántica.

Brush concluded that the periodic law had been generally accepted in the United States and Britain, and has suggested the need to extend this study to other countries. In Early Responses to the Periodic System, renowned historians of science Masanori Kaji, Helge Kragh, and Gábor Palló present the first major comparative analysis on the reception, response, and appropriation of the periodic system of elements among different nation-states. This book examines the history of its pedagogy and popularization in scientific communities, educational sectors, and popular culture from the 1970s to the 1920s. Fifteen notable historians of science explore the impact of Mendeleev's discovery in eleven countries (and one region) central to chemical research, including Russia, Germany, the Czech lands, and Japan, one of the few nation-states outside the Western world to participate in the nineteenth-century scientific research.
