Download or read book Fleet Tactics and Coastal Combat written by Wayne Hughes and published by Naval Institute Press. This book was released on 2014-08-01 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This major revision updates Wayne Hughes's 1986 landmark study that is credited with providing decision makers a sound foundation for battle planning and tactical thinking. The book integrates the historical evolution of tactics, analysis, and fleet operations, and today it can serve as a primer for anyone who wants to learn how navies fight and win. This second edition includes much new material on combat in the missile age and reflects the reconfiguration of many tactics for littoral operations after the fall of the Soviet Union. Hughes recreates famous battles to show how tactics have changed through the ages and the ways in which they have remained unchanged. He covers tactical interaction between land and sea, the sensory revolution of WWII, secret weapons and maritime surprise, the role in battle of leadership and morale, and the importance of surface warships in today's U.S. fleet. He suggests that naval tactics, unlike ground combat, are dominated by the offense and concludes that the great tactical maxim must be attack effectively first. A new chapter traces the evolution of missile tactics at sea and includes details of attacks on ships. Many changes emphasize joint operations and coastal combat. The already extensive appraisal of command and control and information warfare is further expanded to cover modern naval operations and the character of modern salvo warfare. In the tradition of Mahan and Clauswitz, this classic text incorporates literature, politics, and a knowledge of human nature. Indispensable reading for all those interested in naval tactics, it is also a valuable reference for wargamers
Download or read book General Naval Tactics written by Milan Vego and published by Naval Institute Press. This book was released on 2020-10-15 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In General Naval Tactics, Naval War College professor and renowned tactical expert Milan Vego describes and explains those aspects of naval tactics most closely related to the human factor. Specifically, he explains in some detail the objectives and methods/elements of tactical employment of naval forces, command and control, combat support, tactical design, decision-making and planning/execution, leadership, doctrine, and training. Vego derives certain commonalities of naval tactics that occurred in recent and distant wars at sea. Many parts of his theoretical constructs are based on works of a number of well-known and influential naval theoreticians such as Admirals Alfred T. Mahan, Bradley A. Fiske, Raoul Castex, and René Daveluy.and influential naval theoreticians. Whenever possible, the author illustrates each aspect of theory by carefully selected examples from naval history--making the theory more understandable and interesting. Vego aims to present theory that is general in nature and therefore, more durable in its validity. The more general the theory, the greater the possibility of accommodating changes based on new interpretations of past events and as a result of gaining fresh insight from the lessons learned.

Excerpt: ... quarter will it be most effective. Also what rate of speed can be attained without interfering with the precision of fire with this weapon. When we have discussed in order every factor of the offence, then a consideration of the defensive qualities is in order. On what bearing does her armor, or protection of coal, or bulkhead arrangement best cover her vitals, this important steam-pipe or outboard connection, or that ammunition-supply? And so on through every question entering into the fighting of the ship. Out of this all, by drawing comparisons between advantages, and disadvantages comes a settlement upon three things: 1st. Some presentation of the ship, which shall be the strongest to offer to the enemy for offence and defence. 2d. Some rate of speed, which shall serve your weapons best. 3d. Some one range for your guns at which the greatest damage will be inflicted. Doing all this is making a tactical survey of your ship; and upon this bearing, with this speed, and at this distance you must endeavor to keep and fight your enemy. Further on we will see that what is true of one ship is true of ships in combination; and that, in solving the problem concerning the position to be occupied by ships in the line of battle, the question of rank of the several commanding officers hardly even enters. CHAPTER II. WAR-VESSELS. I. To be able to meet the enemy, we must oppose him with a fleet equal, at least, to his own in numbers, construction, speed, and offensive power. To protect our coast, we must be supplied with proper vessels which can keep the sea, yet be of sufficiently light draught to enter most of our harbors. They must be either very swift, or else adequately defended against the fire of the enemy's ships which they are likely to...

Download or read book Understanding Naval Warfare written by Ian Speller and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-09-11 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This updated new edition of Understanding Naval Warfare offers the reader an accessible introduction to the study of modern naval warfare, providing a thorough grounding in the vocabulary, concepts, issues and debates, set within the context of relevant history. The third edition explains traditional concepts and explores current and emerging ideas concerning the theory and practice of naval warfare, relating these to recent events including Sino-American naval competition and the Russian-Ukraine War. Navies operate in an environment that most people do not understand and that many avoid. They are equipped with a bewildering range of ships, craft and other vessels and types of equipment, the purpose of which is often unclear. Writings on naval warfare are usually replete with references to esoteric concepts explained in specialist language that can serve as a barrier to understanding. This book cuts through the obscure and the arcane to offer a clear, coherent and accessible guide to the key features of naval warfare which will equip the reader with the knowledge and understanding necessary for a sophisticated engagement with the subject. The new edition is divided into two key parts. The first focuses on concepts of naval warfare and introduces readers to the ideas associated with the theory and practice of naval operations and includes a chapter where the history of the last century of naval warfare is explored in order to illustrate the key concepts. The second part focuses on the conduct of war at sea and on peacetime roles for contemporary navies and now includes new material on hybrid warfare and grey zone operations and on joint warfare, multi-domain operations and integrated deterrence within the context of evolving great power rivalry at sea. This textbook will be essential reading for students of naval warfare, sea power and maritime security and is highly recommended for those studying military history, strategic studies and security studies in general.
