Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Homiletics: Or Rules and Principles in the Preparation and Preaching of Sermons The book does not claim nor pretend to be a treatise on Homiletics, nor a set of lectures on the subject, in full form. That field is abundantly covered; but there seemed to be need of a text book giving only rules and explanatory notes, which would form the basis of free lectures, which are always preferable in the department of Practical Theology, and give the instructor every Opportunity to make his own additions, comments, and illustrations. Book Introduction to Preaching

Download or read book Introduction to Preaching written by Leah D. Schade and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2023-02-03 with total page 391 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Coauthored by a homiletician, a theologian, and a biblical scholar, this book is a preaching primer that provides tools for crafting effective, engaging, and inspiring sermons. Using a unique workbook-style format, Introduction to Preaching equips seminarians and preachers to use appropriate theological claims informed by solid biblical interpretation while providing several sample sermons from the authors. Readers will learn how to use a three-part schema—the Central Question, the Central Claim, and the Central Purpose—to provide the drive, direction, and destination for the sermon. Offering guidelines for using appropriate sermon forms, imagery, metaphors, and creativity, together with advice on how to deliver contextually relevant sermons using our bodies, presence, and voice make this a staple for both new and experienced preachers. Introduction to Preaching includes a chapter on exploring the space of preaching, including onsite and online sermons. In addition, it features charts and worksheets to help organize the sermon-writing process, as well as exercises for the preacher’s voice and body and tips for advice for guest preachers and supply preachers. A glossary of terms and an extensive bibliography make this a handy reference guide for students and all preachers.

Book Making Your Way to the Pulpit

Download or read book Making Your Way to the Pulpit written by Jerrilee Parker Lewallen and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2010-10-15 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Making Your Way to the Pulpit is a book for beginning preachers, for preachers who will never have a seminary course called "homiletics" (the art of preaching), for preachers who studied homiletics with William Hethcock and want a review, and for all preachers who are looking for a tested, reliable approach to sermon preparation. In short, this is a book for those who preach regularly or occasionally and would like a clear guide for making their way to the pulpit. At the School of Theology (SofT), University of the South, Sewanee, Tennessee, the Rev. Dr. William H. Hethcock directed field education from 1979 to 1985 and taught homiletics from 1985 until his retirement in 1997. After retiring, he continued to teach homiletics on semester contracts at the SofT and the Virginia Theological Seminary (VTS). He remains active as a teacher, speaker on the subject of preaching, and preacher. Assimilating the work of other scholars, Hethcock developed his own process for approaching sermon preparation on a weekly basis. This book summarizes and describes the Hethcock method. When followed, his process reliably gets the preacher to the pulpit with a biblical proclamation that resonates with individuals in today's congregations.

Book Homiletics Or the Theory of Preaching

Download or read book Homiletics Or the Theory of Preaching written by Alexander Vinet and published by . This book was released on 2017-09-13 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work by Vinet is one of the most quoted volumes in the history of teaching ministers the science of homiletics. Homiletics is the study of sermon preparation and preaching the Word of God with boldness, faithfulness and precision. The office of the Evangelical Ministry consists of different elements, among which the Word of God has the predominance. The Christian religion, the religion of liberty and persuasion, is a word. Jesus Christ, who is at once the Author and the Object of Christianity, is called the Word. The Word is the pastor's great instrument. The minister speaks either on the part of man to God, or on the part of God to man; in doing the first he prays, in doing the second he preaches. It is of the second that this work treats. The Word is of the highest importance, and a minister is essentially a man who heralds the Word of God. This act of preaching has been reduced down into a teachable art. It gives preachers eloquence in their preaching if the rules of homiletics are faithfully followed, and as they are biblically solidified. The nature of ecclesiastical discourse involves differences from regular public speaking, and adds specific biblical rules which constitute a particular art under the name of Homiletics. Here the minister, if he is to preach the Word of God effectively, and for the glory of Christ, would be required to master his language, gestures, looks, etc., in order to be more eloquent in faithfully, biblically and precisely preaching the Word of God to the people of God. This volume constitutes one of the greatest courses on homiletics given in the history of the Christian church. It would serve any minister well who desires to faithfully feed his flock in both the act of sermon preparation and preaching from the pulpit.
