Book Elementa Prima

Download or read book Elementa Prima written by Luther Denny Whittemore and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-16 with total page 490 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementa Prima: The First Elements of Latin The underlying purpose in the preparation of this book is suggested by the lines of Horace from which the quotation on the title-page and the title itself have been taken: - Ridentem dicere verum quid vetat? ut pueris olim dant crustula blandi doctores, elementa velint ut discere prima. What is there to prevent the teaching of Latin in an alluring manner so that the young student may be not only willing, but eager, to put forth the effort required in learning the first principles of the language? At best the study of a foreign language is difficult for the beginner and the benefits to be derived from it seem remote; and for these reasons, if for no other, it is the part of wisdom to encourage the learner and to ameliorate the difficulties in his way by employing a method of instruction that is both rational and attractive. It should be recognized from the very beginning that language is a medium for the expression of thought and not an arbitrary contrivance to illustrate grammar. Hence the immediate object of the study should not be to acquire information about the language, but to become acquainted with the language itself; and it should be self-evident that the portions of the language assigned for study should express comprehensible ideas. Each sentence should convey a meaning intelligible to the student and the successive sentences should have a logical sequence. In this book the material for study is based on the reading matter, all of which has meaning connected from sentence to sentence; and this applies to the numbered sentences in the reading exercises as well as to the matter arranged in paragraphs. In order to attract the student's attention and to sustain it while he is working out the grammatical details, some suitable incentive must be offered, which should not be too obscure; and the acquisition of grammatical knowledge as such is not sufficient for this purpose. The more difficult the principle to be learned, the more inviting should be the manner of its presentation. Book In Search of the Genuine Word of God

Download or read book In Search of the Genuine Word of God written by Rajmund Pietkiewicz and published by Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht. This book was released on 2020-12-14 with total page 347 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth familiarized itself with Christian Hebraism in the first half of the 16th century. "In Search of 'the Genuine Word of God'" sketches out the process in three chapters. The first one deals with the development of modern Hebrew studies in Western Europe, the second gives an account of the academic and religious level of Hebrew scholarship in the Commonwealth in the 16th century and at the beginning of the 17th century, and the third is devoted to Polish translations of the Hebrew Bible, which were the most significant consequences of the reception of the West-European Christian Hebraism in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth in Renaissance. Knowledge of Hebrew would be spread in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth through personal contacts of magnates and church dignitaries with the Western European Hebrew experts, through Jewish converts teaching Semitic languages, through foreign studies at European universities and through books. Polish Christian Hebraism was not creative; local humanists and reformers who communicated with adherents of Judaism contributed but little to domestic Hebrew studies. Only scholarly trends occasioned by different Christian confessions come to our notice. Hebrew studies were undertaken within universities or religious movements. The purpose was practical: to have direct access to the original Hebrew Bible for the sake of theological disputes or to have proper translation tools for rendering the Scripture in Polish.

Book Pietro Pomponazzi and the Renaissance Theory of the Elements

Download or read book Pietro Pomponazzi and the Renaissance Theory of the Elements written by Luca Burzelli and published by Leuven University Press. This book was released on 2024-07-15 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In medieval and early modern natural philosophy, very few issues were as controversial as the nature of the elements. From the thirteenth up until the sixteenth century, European thinkers discussed this problem with growing interest. Defining the nature of the elements was key to deciphering the very structure of the universe and the essence of things. Along with five primary texts, here edited for the first time, this book discusses one of the most original contributions to this debate, that of Renaissance philosopher Pietro Pomponazzi (d. 1525). Pomponazzi’s account, developed in university lectures, holds significance for two reasons. First, it provides a thorough description of the most influential doctrines on the elements presented by medieval scholars, opening a window onto three hundred years of prior discussions on the topic. Second, Pomponazzi also develops his own views on the issue, explicitly defining them as ‘heretical’ to emphasise his departure from all opinions expressed before him.
