Book excerpt: After the truth about Adonis' past comes to light, his release from prison is now in jeopardy. And with the true identity of Chaz being revealed, there is nothing that could possibly stop Michael ‘Flex' Owens from getting at the woman responsible for his pain and suffering. Not only is Flex on a mission to get at Chaz—the bane of his existence—but he also enlists the help of some unexpected people. That’s when things really take a turn for the worst and change the dynamics of how things were supposed to turn out. However, prior to Flex getting the help he so desperately needed, he encounters a life changing ordeal with someone that is also tied to Chaz. Ultimately, the situation that Flex finds himself in is truly something that no one could have predicted. Furthermore, the fact that no one has any idea of where Patty-Mae is, is an issue in itself. Her unknown whereabouts lead skeptics to do a little eyebrow raising. So the question is, will Chaz wiggle herself out of harm's way and reclaim her life. Or, will there be a new set of surprises awaiting her? Only time will tell!! Author's Note: This book contains extreme levels of sex and violence and should only be read by readers that thrive for excitement. Please take the proper approach to keep your euphoria from going haywire.

Download or read book Special Operations and National Security written by Ben Gans and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-11-08 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on strategic special operations and how these have led to the achievement of major foreign policy goals, which is illustrated by six case studies. The study specifically focuses on the alignment of the policies, strategies, and tactics that dominated these operations, providing a fresh perspective. Theoretically, the work underscores the continued relevance of relative superiority as the dominant theory in the field. Importantly, it aligns the potential ways of achieving and sustaining relative superiority with the ability to conduct contemporary special operations across multiple domains, thereby generating cross-dimensional effects. In terms of methodology, the book includes a description and analysis of six distinct case studies in special operations, ranging from short-term surgical strikes to sustained special warfare campaigns and spanning multiple geographic regions – including in Iran, Lebanon, Syria, Ukraine, and the South China Sea. From that perspective, relative superiority theory is extrapolated to explain how this critical condition can be achieved and sustained during protracted special operations. The unique value of this research is underscored by the author's collection of exclusive primary source data on the operations in the respective countries. The book’s conclusions explain how the personnel involved fulfill the strategic promise of special operations, given their position within the larger framework of foreign policy. This book will be of much interest to students of special operations, military and strategic studies, defense studies, and security studies in general.

Download or read book Novelty Information and Surprise written by Günther Palm and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-01-02 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This revised edition offers an approach to information theory that is more general than the classical approach of Shannon. Classically, information is defined for an alphabet of symbols or for a set of mutually exclusive propositions (a partition of the probability space Ω) with corresponding probabilities adding up to 1. The new definition is given for an arbitrary cover of Ω, i.e. for a set of possibly overlapping propositions. The generalized information concept is called novelty and it is accompanied by two concepts derived from it, designated as information and surprise, which describe "opposite" versions of novelty, information being related more to classical information theory and surprise being related more to the classical concept of statistical significance. In the discussion of these three concepts and their interrelations several properties or classes of covers are defined, which turn out to be lattices. The book also presents applications of these concepts, mostly in statistics and in neuroscience.

Download or read book Surprise at the Intersection of Phenomenology and Linguistics written by Natalie Depraz and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2019-11-15 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Surprise is treated as an affect in Aristotelian philosophy as well as in Cartesian philosophy. In experimental psychology, surprise is considered to be an emotion. In phenomenology, it is only addressed indirectly in phenomenology (Husserl, Heidegger, Levinas), with the important exception of Ricœur and Maldiney; it is reduced to a break in cognition by cognitivists (Dennett). Only recently was it broached in linguistics, with a focus on lexico-syntactic categories. As for the expression of surprise, it has been studied in connection with evidentiality in languages that encode surprise morphosyntactically. However, how surprise is encoded in languages that lack an evidential morphosyntactic system has been largely unexplored. This book provides new insights into the dynamics of surprise based on a heuristic hypothesis tested against the investigation of time, language and emotion. It is intended to arouse the interest of a multidisciplinary audience keen on crossing the disciplinary borders of phenomenology, cognitive sciences, and pragmatics. The theoretical approaches adopted in this collection of articles rely on experiments and corpus data. They advance knowledge by building on robust empirical results coming from psychology, microphenomenology, linguistics and physiology.
Download or read book Probability and Information written by David Applebaum and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1996-07-13 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This elementary introduction to probability theory and information theory is suitable as a textbook for beginning students in mathematics, statistics or computer science who have some knowledge of basic calculus. It provides a clear and systematic foundation to the subject; the concept of probability is given particular attention via a highly simplified discussion of measures on Boolean algebras. The theoretical ideas are then applied to practical areas such as statistical inference, random walks, statistical mechanics and communications modelling. Topics dealt with include discrete and continuous random variables, entropy and mutual information, maximum entropy methods, the central limit theorem and the coding and transmission of information. Many examples and exercises are included that illustrate how the theory can be applied, for example to information technology. Detailed solutions to most exercises are available electronically from the Cambridge WWW server.

Download or read book Intelligence And Surprise The Battle Of Midway written by LCMR Stephanie A. Markam USN and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2015-11-06 with total page 43 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Intelligence is a key element in the military strategy of surprise. It is perplexing to many that in today’s high technology environment that intelligence cannot prevent surprises from happening. The very nature of the intelligence, no matter how much or how sophisticated it is, will still permit one adversary to surprise another. It is crucial that the operational commander have a clear understanding of the process of the production of intelligence, the uses of intelligence and how it can affect the strategy of surprise. The dramatic success of the Battle of Midway, coming so closely on the heels of the shocking disaster at Pearl Harbor, demonstrated that Admiral Nimitz gained an appreciation for the value of intelligence. I will examine intelligence and the strategy of surprise in general terms and shows how the battle of Midway was influenced by them. Finally, I want to point out that though today’s operations may be more sophisticated than those of World War II, there are plenty of critical concerns to consider today with regard to intelligence and surprise at the operational level.

This book was released on 2019-08-06 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes methods, risks, and challenges involved in the construction of metaphor and metonymy digital repositories. The first part of this volume showcases established and new projects around the world in which metaphors and metonymies are harvested and classified. The second part provides a series of cognitive linguistic studies focused on highlighting and discussing theoretical and methodological risks and challenges involved in building these digital resources. The volume is a result of an interdisciplinary collaboration between cognitive linguists, psychologists, and computational scientists supporting an overarching idea that metaphor and metonymy play a central role in human cognition, and that they are deeply entrenched in recurring patterns of bodily experience. Throughout the volume, a variety of methods are proposed to collect and analyze both conceptual metaphors and metonymies and their linguistic and visual expressions.
