Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 2008 American Library Association Notable Book in Poetry For more than half a century, readers and listeners have taken special pleasure in the poetry of X. J. Kennedy. In a Prominent Bar in Secaucus is an ample gathering of his best work: memorable songs, startling lyrics, poems that tell poignant stories, character studies that vie with those of Edwin Arlington Robinson. A master of verbal music, Kennedy has long been praised for his wit and humor; as this collection reveals, many of his poems also reach surprising depths and heights. Donald Hall comments, "many of Kennedy's poems are wit itself. His wit is his way of understanding. No one else writing is capable of the effects in which Kennedy specializes." This book skims the cream from several slim volumes and six past collections including the prize-winning Nude Descending a Staircase, Cross Ties, and The Lords of Misrule. It restores to print over fifty poems unavailable for decades and adds more than two dozen new poems collected for the first time. Kennedy has long occupied a unique place in American poetry; In a Prominent Bar in Secaucus now offers the first comprehensive collection to span his entire career.

This book teaches us to recognize the multiplicity contained in each of us, the different drives and needs that bring different approaches to our daily life, so we can begin to consider them as precious resources and no longer as obstacles. Understanding the complex relationships within us will help us to live better with ourselves and with others, since all our relationships in a family, social or working environment, show a similar pattern to those that happen within us. Curiosity, a playful attitude, having fun, are pleasant approaches to this research and help us to understand ourselves, what happens to our different parts, and also to discover and appreciate all the talents we have. The theory and the simple exercises presented in this book invite you to follow a path in search of knowing yourself step by step, offering a useful and verifiable set of tools at a personal level. “Everyone represents a potentially perfect team. The harmony of the whole is consciousness. It is love. Integration is possible only through Love, in any circumstance and at any level.” Falco Tarassaco

Book Creativity and the Poetic Mind

Download or read book Creativity and the Poetic Mind written by Jean Tobin and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2004 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Creativity and the Poetic Mind mingles the voices of well-known writers such as Nikki Giovanni, Donald Hall, John Koethe, Marge Piercy, and Robert Pinsky with newer voices, and includes engaging excerpts from interviews with thirty-eight American poets. Within a sustained argument about creative states of mind, this book innovatively presents and explores the technique of «going to the place» as more reliable in writing poetry than waiting for «inspiration». It explains why poets frequently believe that talking about their own poetry may damage their creativity and why, for centuries, inspiration has seemed to come from somewhere beyond the poet. In addition, it discusses the practicality of poets' thinking that «being creative» and «writing poetry» are two separate skills: inspiration is unreliable, but experienced poets create daily.

Book Modernismo Modernity and the Development of Spanish American Literature

Download or read book Modernismo Modernity and the Development of Spanish American Literature written by Cathy L. Jrade and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 1998 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modernismo arose in Spanish American literature as a confrontation with and a response to modernizing forces that were transforming Spanish American society in the later nineteenth century. In this book, Cathy L. Jrade undertakes a full exploration of the modernista project and shows how it provided a foundation for trends and movements that have continued to shape literary production in Spanish America throughout the twentieth century. Jrade opens with a systematic consideration of the development of modernismo and then proceeds with detailed analyses of works-poetry, narrative, and essays-that typified and altered the movement's course. In this way, she situates the writing of key authors, such as Rubén Darío, José Martí, and Leopoldo Lugones, within the overall modernista project and traces modernismo's influence on subsequent generations of writers. Jrade's analysis reclaims the power of the visionary stance taken by these creative intellectuals. She firmly abolishes any lingering tendency to associate modernismo with affectation and effete elegance, revealing instead how the modernistas' new literary language expressed their profound political and epistemological concerns.

Book Breathing Flesh

    Book Details:
  • Author : Rune Nyord
  • Publisher : Museum Tusculanum Press
  • Release : 2009
  • ISBN : 8763526050
  • Pages : 662 pages

Download or read book Breathing Flesh written by Rune Nyord and published by Museum Tusculanum Press. This book was released on 2009 with total page 662 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ancient Egyptian Coffin Texts form a corpus of ritual spells written on the inside of coffins from the Middle Kingdom (c. 2000-1650 BCE). Thus accompanying the deceased in a very concrete sense, the spells are part of a long Egyptian tradition of equipping the dead with ritual texts ensuring the transition from the state of a living human being to that of a deceased ancestor. The texts present a view of death as entailing threats to the function of the body, often conceptualised as bodily fragmentation or dysfunction. In the transformation of the deceased, the restoration of these bodily dysfunctions is of paramount importance, and the texts provide detailed accounts of the ritual empowerment of the body to achieve this goal. Seen from this perspective, the Coffin Texts provide a rich material for studying ancient Egyptian conceptions of the body by providing insights into the underlying structure of the body as a whole and the proper function of individual part of the body as seen by the ancient Egyptians. Drawing on a theoretical framework from cognitive linguistics and phenomenological anthropology, Breathing Flesh presents an analysis of the conceptualisation of the human body and its individual parts in the ancient Egyptian Coffin Texts. From this starting point, more overarching concepts and cultural models are discussed, including the ritual conceptualisation of the acquisition and use of powerful substances such as "magic", and the role of fertility and procreation in ancient Egyptian mortuary conceptions.
