Book Transport and Decoherence Phenomena in Quantum Dots

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The problem of a few electronic level coupling to an environmental heat bath, such as in quantum dots (QDs), is well-known in modern quantum physics. These systems have been widely studied as they can dictate the dephasing properties in many practical opto-electronic devices. In this thesis we focus on the electron-phonon (quantized lattice vibrations) coupling in QDs that are embedded within semiconductor nanowires. For interband optical transitions, the electron-phonon interactions are treated using a cumulant expansion approach which includes the non-Markovian dynamics. Both the longitudinal optical (LO) and longitudinal acoustic (LA) phonons are included, and structural variations of the QDs are investigated, which, typically the LO phonons and structural asymmetry have been neglected in the literature. We find that the linewidth can have variations on three orders of magnitude when changing the QD geometry due to LO phonon interactions, which obviously has significant implications in mitigating phonon-induced dephasing. Comparison to experimental results is shown for validation of the theoretical model. Finally, we elucidate these effects for single photon emitters composed of different materials. In the intersublevel regime, we study the electron transport dynamics in a quantum dot cascade laser (QDCL), which is a promising candidate as the semiconductor gain medium for THz lasing. The quantum kinetics are included by means of an intuitive and accurate density matrix approach, valid for weak to intermediate e-phonon interaction strength. We find that at low temperatures, the LA phonons can help to inject electrons into the upper lasing state. We believe these findings should be considered and utilized in future opto-electronic device designs.

Book Electron Transport in Quantum Dots

Download or read book Electron Transport in Quantum Dots written by Jonathan P. Bird and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-27 with total page 481 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When I was contacted by Kluwer Academic Publishers in the Fall of 200 I, inviting me to edit a volume of papers on the issue of electron transport in quantum dots, I was excited by what I saw as an ideal opportunity to provide an overview of a field of research that has made significant contributions in recent years, both to our understanding of fundamental physics, and to the development of novel nanoelectronic technologies. The need for such a volume seemed to be made more pressing by the fact that few comprehensive reviews of this topic have appeared in the literature, in spite of the vast activity in this area over the course of the last decade or so. With this motivation, I set out to try to compile a volume that would fairly reflect the wide range of opinions that has emerged in the study of electron transport in quantum dots. Indeed, there has been no effort on my part to ensure any consistency between the different chapters, since I would prefer that this volume instead serve as a useful forum for the debate of critical issues in this still developing field. In this matter, I have been assisted greatly by the excellent series of articles provided by the different authors, who are widely recognized as some of the leaders in this vital area of research.

Book Quantum Dots for Quantum Information Processing Controlling and Exploiting the Quantum Dot Environment

Download or read book Quantum Dots for Quantum Information Processing Controlling and Exploiting the Quantum Dot Environment written by Martin J. A. Schütz and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-11-15 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis offers a comprehensive introduction to surface acoustic waves in the quantum regime. It addresses two of the most significant technological challenges in developing a scalable quantum information processor based on spins in quantum dots: (i) decoherence of the electronic spin qubit due to the surrounding nuclear spin bath, and (ii) long-range spin-spin coupling between remote qubits. Electron spins confined in quantum dots (QDs) are among the leading contenders for implementing quantum information processing. To this end, the author pursues novel strategies that turn the unavoidable coupling to the solid-state environment (in particular, nuclear spins and phonons) into a valuable asset rather than a liability.

Book Semiconductor Nanostructures

Download or read book Semiconductor Nanostructures written by Dieter Bimberg and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-06-03 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reducing the size of a coherently grown semiconductor cluster in all three directions of space to a value below the de Broglie wavelength of a charge carrier leads to complete quantization of the energy levels, density of states, etc. Such “quantum dots” are more similar to giant atoms in a dielectric cage than to classical solids or semiconductors showing a dispersion of energy as a function of wavevector. Their electronic and optical properties depend strongly on their size and shape, i.e. on their geometry. By designing the geometry by controlling the growth of QDs, absolutely novel possibilities for material design leading to novel devices are opened. This multiauthor book written by world-wide recognized leaders of their particular fields and edited by the recipient of the Max-Born Award and Medal 2006 Professor Dieter Bimberg reports on the state of the art of the growing of quantum dots, the theory of self-organised growth, the theory of electronic and excitonic states, optical properties and transport in a variety of materials. It covers the subject from the early work beginning of the 1990s up to 2006. The topics addressed in the book are the focus of research in all leading semiconductor and optoelectronic device laboratories of the world.

Book Semiconductor Quantum Dots

Download or read book Semiconductor Quantum Dots written by Ladislaus B nyai and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1993 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Semiconductor Quantum Dots presents an overview of the background and recent developments in the rapidly growing field of ultrasmall semiconductor microcrystallites, in which the carrier confinement is sufficiently strong to allow only quantized states of the electrons and holes. The main emphasis of this book is the theoretical analysis of the confinement induced modifications of the optical and electronic properties of quantum dots in comparison with extended materials. The book develops the theoretical background material for the analysis of carrier quantum-confinement effects, introduces the different confinement regimes for relative or center-of-mass motion quantization of the electron-hole-pairs, and gives an overview of the best approximation schemes for each regime. A detailed discussion of the carrier states in quantum dots is presented and surface polarization instabilities are analyzed, leading to the self-trapping of carriers near the surface of the dots. The influence of spin-orbit coupling on the quantum-confined carrier states is discussed. The linear and nonlinear optical properties of small and large quantum dots are studied in detail and the influence of the quantum-dot size distribution in many realistic samples is outlined. Phonons in quantum dots as well as the influence of external electric or magnetic fields are also discussed. Last but not least the recent developments dealing with regular systems of quantum dots are also reviewed. All things included, this is an important piece of work on semiconductor quantum dots not to be dismissed by serious researchers and physicists.

Book Kondo Effect and Dephasing in Low Dimensional Metallic Systems

Download or read book Kondo Effect and Dephasing in Low Dimensional Metallic Systems written by Venkat Chandrasekhar and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2001-12-31 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The availability of nanolithographic tools and new spectroscopies (scanning tunneling microscope, mechanically controllable break junctions) has opened the possibility of directly probing the Kondo effect on the relevant mesoscopic size scale. This book brings together the major progress that has been made during the past few years on low-dimensional Kondo systems. Apart from size effects in dilute magnetic alloys, the book focuses on the two-channel Kondo effect to describe two-level systems which influence the electron transport through metallic nanobridges and cause dephasing in disordered metal films. It also reveals how quantum dots can be used as perfectly tunable Kondo systems.

Book Semiconductor Spintronics and Quantum Computation

Download or read book Semiconductor Spintronics and Quantum Computation written by David Awschalom and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2002-06-13 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The manipulation of electric charge in bulk semiconductors and their heterostructures is the basis of nearly all modern electronic and opto-electronic devices. Recent studies of spin-dependent phenomena in semiconductors open the door to technologies that harness the spin of the electron in semiconductor devices. In addition to providing spin-dependent analogies that extend existing electronic devices into the realm of semiconductor "spintronics," the spin degree of freedom also offers prospects for fundamentally new functionality in the quantum domain, ranging from storage to computation. This is likely to play a crucial role in the information technologies in the 21st century. This book, written by a team of experts, provides an overview of emerging concepts in this rapidly developing field. The topics range from spin transport and injection in semiconductors and their heterostructures to coherent processes and computation in semiconductor quantum structures and microcavities.
