Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Polycrystalline platinum and palladium were bombarded with monoenergetic electrons at temperatures below 9K. Changes in electrical resistivity R(E) = delta rho/electron-sq cm were measured in the energy range 1.1 to 3.0 MeV. The experimental values found in this interval are consistent with displacement threshold energies of 37 eV for Pt and 34 eV for Pd. The resistivities per unit defect concentration were found to be 0.00075 and 0.0009 ohm-cm for Pt and Pd respectively. The threshold energies found here, together with values reported for other face centered cubic elements, are shown to be directly proportional to atomic number and inversely proportional to the lattice parameter. It is also shown that the resistivities per unit defect concentration can be correlated with the resistivity at 0C. Analysis of the energy dependence of the damage production indicates atomic displacement cascades are markedly inhibited, which is consistent with deuteron damage studies. Alternative multiple displacement models and possible mechanisms are discussed. (Author).

Book excerpt: A description is presented of a 2 Mev pulsed electron facility which employs a scanning electron beam probe at the target plane for the investigation of transient trapping phenomena in irradiated materials. The application of the facility to the study of trapped charge behavior in electron irradiated dielectrics is described somewhat below the threshold for spontaneous breakdown in the materials in a selected dose rate regime. A tentative interpretation is made of the characteristic decay curves for these high resistivity materials. An outline is presented of beam diagnostic techniques suitable for the 10 to the 10th power to 10 to the 11th power w/sq cm peak power electron beams available from a 4 Mv, 20 nanosecond pulsed electron accelerator and examples of their application discussed. A preliminary evaluation is made of some of the effects produced in materials by these relativistic self-focused streams at dose rates to 10 to the 15th power rad/sec. (Author).

Book excerpt: To preserve tissue by freezing is an ancient concept going back pre sumably to the practice of ice-age hunters. At first glance, it seems as simple as it is attractive: the dynamics of life are frozen in, nothing is added and nothing withdrawn except thermal energy. Thus, the result should be more life-like than after poisoning, tan ning and drying a living cell as we may rudely call the conventional preparation of specimens for electron microscopy. Countless mishaps, however, have taught electron microscopists that cryotechniques too are neither simple nor necessarily more life-like in their outcome. Not too long ago, experts in cryotechniques strictly denied that a cell could truly be vitrified, i.e. that all the solutes and macro molecules could be fixed within non-crystalline, glass-like solid water without the dramatic shifts and segregation effects caused by crystallization. We now know that vitrification is indeed pos sible. Growing insight into the fundamentals of the physics of water and ice, as well as increasing experience of how to cool cells rapidly enough have enlivened the interest in cryofixation and pro duced a wealth of successful applications.
