Book Plasma Science and the Environment

Download or read book Plasma Science and the Environment written by Wallace Manheimer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1996-11-14 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Written by some of the world's foremost experts, the articles in this book show how plasma science can be applied to environmental problems, including atmospheric sensing and modification, energy conservation, reduction of air pollution, and processing of ordinary and radioactive wastes. Atmospheric CFC's might be zapped with big lasers. Urban air pollution could be removed by large convection towers built in or near cities. And weapons-grade plutonium can be destroyed with specially designed particle accelerators. Some of the technologies described here are in use already, while others are in the prototype stage, or are speculative approaches deserving of further study." Book The Microbiology of Deep Sea Hydrothermal Vents

Download or read book The Microbiology of Deep Sea Hydrothermal Vents written by David M. Karl and published by Springer. This book was released on 1995-07-14 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Microbiology of Deep-Sea Hydrothermal Vents is the first comprehensive treatment of the microbiology of these unusual deep-sea ecosystems. It includes information on microbial biodiversity, ecology, physiology, and the origin of life. It is the first volume available on the subject. All chapters are written by leaders in their respective fields who have made substantial contributions to the current understanding of these novel deep-sea habitats. Much of the book's material is entirely new and forward looking. Individual chapters examine the geologic setting and chemistry of deep-sea hydrothermal vents, growth at high temperatures, microbe-metal interactions and mineral deposition, stable isotopes, and more. This reference presents a unique interdisciplinary approach to the study of hydrothermal vents. Because of its thorough coverage of the subject, the book will continue to be a valuable resource for researchers in this field for the next decade.

Book Physics of Dusty Plasmas

Download or read book Physics of Dusty Plasmas written by André Melzer and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-06-13 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Colloidal plasmas - a still emerging field of plasma physics - enable the study of basic plasma properties on a microscopic kinetic level and allow the visualization of collective plasma phenomena, like oscillations and waves. Moreover, a vast number of novel phenomena are found in these systems, ranging from Coulomb crystallization to new types of forces and waves. Last but not least, they shed a new light on various traditional aspects of plasma physics such as shielding or the mechanism of acoustic waves in plasmas, thus providing new insight into the basic foundations of plasma physics. These course-based and self-contained lecture notes provide a general introduction to this active and growing field to students and nonspecialists, requiring only basic prior knowledge in plasma physics.

Book Plasma Assisted Decontamination of Biological and Chemical Agents

Download or read book Plasma Assisted Decontamination of Biological and Chemical Agents written by Selçuk Güçeri and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-10-12 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Plasma decontamination is a rapidly expanding area of modern science and engineering. An increasing number of engineers are using plasma methods for decontamination of chemical and biological agents. Plasma decontamination is effectively applied today to clean and sterilize different surfaces, high volume air and water streams, industrial exhausts, and even living tissue of animals and humans. This book provides a fundamental introduction to virtually all aspects of modern plasma decontamination, as well as the most recent technological achievements in the area. The book is segmented into four specific sections of modern plasma decontamination: (1) plasma bio-decontamination, including disinfection and sterilization of surfaces, water and air streams; (2) plasma decontamination of chemical agents, including cleaning of air, water, and industrial exhaust gases from different pollutants and especially volatile organic compounds VOC; (3) plasma treatment of living tissue, including different subjects of plasma medicine from skin sterilization to tissue engineering; (4) major electric discharges applied for the plasma-assisted decontamination of chemical and biological agents.

Book Strongly Coupled Coulomb Systems

Download or read book Strongly Coupled Coulomb Systems written by Gabor J. Kalman and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-03-11 with total page 699 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The International Conference on Strongly Coupled Coulomb Systems was held on the campus of Boston College in Newton, Massachusetts, August 3–10, 1997. Although this conference was the first under a new name, it was the continuation of a series of international meetings on strongly coupled plasmas and other Coulomb systems that started with the NATO Summer Institute on Strongly Coupled Plasmas, almost exactly twenty years prior to this conference, in July of 1977 in Orleans la Source, France. Over the intervening period the field of strongly coupled plasmas has developed vigorously. In the 1977 meeting the emphasis was on computer (Monte Carlo and molecular dynamics) simulations which provided, for the first time, insight into the rich and new physics of strongly coupled fully ionizedplasmas. While theorists scrambled to provide a theoretical underpinning for these results, there was also a dearth of real experimental input to reinforce the computer simulations. Over the past few years this situation has changed drastically and a variety of direct experiments on classical, pure, strongly correlated plasma systems (charged particle traps, dusty plasmas, electrons on the surface of liquid helium, etc. ) have become available. Even more importantly, entire new area of experimental interest in condensed matter physics have opened up through developments in nano-technology and the fabrication of low-dimensional systems, where the physical behavior, in many ways, is similar to that in classical plasmas. Strongly coupled plasma physics has always been an interdisciplinaryactivity.

Book Complex Plasmas

    Book Details:
  • Author : Michael Bonitz
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2014-04-09
  • ISBN : 3319054376
  • Pages : 495 pages

Download or read book Complex Plasmas written by Michael Bonitz and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2014-04-09 with total page 495 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides the reader with an introduction to the physics of complex plasmas, a discussion of the specific scientific and technical challenges they present and an overview of their potential technological applications. Complex plasmas differ from conventional high-temperature plasmas in several ways: they may contain additional species, including nano meter- to micrometer-sized particles, negative ions, molecules and radicals and they may exhibit strong correlations or quantum effects. This book introduces the classical and quantum mechanical approaches used to describe and simulate complex plasmas. It also covers some key experimental techniques used in the analysis of these plasmas, including calorimetric probe methods, IR absorption techniques and X-ray absorption spectroscopy. The final part of the book reviews the emerging applications of microcavity and microchannel plasmas, the synthesis and assembly of nanomaterials through plasma electrochemistry, the large-scale generation of ozone using microplasmas and novel applications of atmospheric-pressure non-thermal plasmas in dentistry. Going beyond the scope of traditional plasma texts, the presentation is very well suited for senior undergraduate, graduate students and postdoctoral researchers specializing in plasma physics.
