During the last sixty years of research, our initial primitive understanding of plasma physics has made impressive progress thanks to a variety of experiments — from tabletop devices with plasma temperatures of a few thousands of degrees and confinement times of less than 100 microseconds, to large tokamaks with plasma temperatures of up to five hundred million degrees and confinement times approaching one second. We discovered that plasma confinement is impaired by a variety of instabilities leading to turbulent processes with scales ranging from the plasma size to a few millimeters. Understanding these phenomena, which have slowed down progress towards a fusion reactor, requires the use of very sophisticated diagnostic tools, many of which employ electromagnetic waves.The primary objective of this book is to discuss the fundamental physics upon which the application of electromagnetic waves to the study of magnetically confined plasmas is based.

Book excerpt: It is shown that even a non-magnetized plasma with temperature T sustains zero-frequency magnetic fluctuations in thermal equilibrium. Fluctuations in electric and magnetic fields, as well as in densities, are computed. Four cases are studied: a cold, gaseous, isotropic, non-magnetized plasma; a cold, gaseous plasma in a uniform magnetic field; a warm, gaseous plasma described by kinetic theory; and a degenerate electron plasma. For the simple gaseous plasma, the fluctuation strength of the magnetic field as a function of frequency and wavenumber is calculated with the aid of the fluctuation-dissipation theorem. This calculation is done for both collisional and collisionless plasmas. The magnetic field fluctuation spectrum of each plasma has a large zero-frequency peak. The peak is a Dirac [delta]-function in the collisionless plasma; it is broadened into a Lorentzian curve in the collisional plasma. The plasma causes a low frequency cutoff in the typical black-body radiation spectrum, and the energy under the discovered peak approximates the energy lost in this cutoff. When the imposed magnetic field is weak, the magnetic field were vector fluctuation spectra of the two lowest modes are independent of the strength of the imposed field. Further, these modes contain finite energy even when the imposed field is zero. It is the energy of these modes which forms the non-magnetized zero-frequency peak of the isotropic plasma. In deriving these results, a simple relationship between the dispersion relation and the fluctuation power spectrum of electromagnetic waves if found. The warm plasma is shown, by kinetic theory, to exhibit a zero-frequency peak in its magnetic field fluctuation spectrum as well. For the degenerate plasma, we find that electric field fluctuations and number density fluctuations vanish at zero frequency; however, the magnetic field power spectrum diverges at zero frequency.

Laboratory studies of the plasma instabilities generated in microwave-plasma interactions have helped to understand the geophysical experiments. Microwave-plasma research has also been useful in modeling the interaction of lasers and plasmas, particularly in relation to efforts using pulsed lasers to compress and heat plasma to thermonuclear conditions. An experiment is described which investigates the evolution of the parametric instability which occurs with near resonant matching of the microwave frequency and plasma frequency. Near threshold, a finely detailed spectrum of satelite electron plasma waves is observed. These waves break down into a turbulent plasma condition with a marked change in power absorbed by the plasma. The plasma passes through several distinctive regimes of turbulent plasma conditions. At the highest power levels used, there are plasma waves hundreds of megacycles from the driving frequency. The plasma is found to absorb a significant amount of power and heat electrons to high energies. (Author).

The level of fluctuations in the plasma for a given wavelength and frequency of electromagnetic fields is calculated through the fluctuation-dissipation theorem. The frequency spectrum shows that the energy contained in this peak is complementary to the energy lost'' by the plasma cutoff effect. The level of the zero (or nearly zero) frequency magnetic is computed as {l angle}B2{r angle}°/ 8? = 1/2?3T(?{sub p}/c)3, where T and?{sub p} are the temperature and plasma frequency. The relation between the nonradiative and radiative fluctuations is elucidated. Both a simple collision model and a kinetic theoretic treatment are presented with essentially the same results. The size of the fluctuations is? - (c/?{sub p})(?/?){sup {1/2}}, where? and? are the collision frequency and the (nearly zero) frequency of magnetic fields oscillations. Perhaps the most dramatic application of the present theory, however, is to the cosmological plasma of early epoch. Implications of these magnetic fields in the early Universe are discussed. Quantum mechanical calculations are also carried out for degenerate plasmas.
