Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Corrosion product scales formed under different conditions were investigated using EIS and surface analysis techniques. Temperature, pressure and exposure time were confirmed to be the important factors influencing the degree of protection given by the scale. The morphology of corrosion scales showed an obvious correlation to their protective ability. Electron microscopy revealed two types of crystal structures on corroded steel coupons. The smaller crystals associated with one of these structures was found to contribute most to corrosion protection. Several typical CO(subscript)2 corrosion inhibitors, including an imidazoline and a quaternised amine, were studied by EIS. A multi-layer model was employed to explain the EIS characteristics and self-repairing ability of imidazoline films. A quaternised amine film is most probably a physically or electrostatically adsorbed molecular layer which forms rapidly and desorbs easily. The deterioration of films, formed by commercial batch treatment inhibitors, was found to occur in three stages which were indicated or characterised by Bode phase-angle plots. A method to determine inhibitor film persistency was developed. This method is based on determining the three stages of inhibitor film deterioration, and the continuous measurement of corrosion rate, which is accessible at the second and third stages of film deterioration.

Corrosion engineers have developed strategies to mitigate corrosion, and among these, the use of organic corrosion inhibitors is one of the most widely used solutions. Corrosion inhibitors are substances that significantly reduce corrosion when added in small, typically ppm level, concentrations. Knowledge related to their efficiency, and associated mechanisms of inhibition, has been developed by conducting experiments in physicochemical conditions that simulate field environments during their application. Nonetheless, there is a lack of studies in the open literature that mechanistically define the effect of corrosion inhibitors on the kinetics of the electrochemical processes underlying corrosion. Consequently, the central objective of this research was to propose a mechanistic model that describes and predicts the effect of organic corrosion inhibitors on the electrochemical processes governing the carbon dioxide corrosion of mild steel. In order to develop the mechanistic model, corrosion studies included the electrochemical characterization of aqueous steel corrosion in the presence of known corrosion inhibitor packages (quaternary-ammonium-type and imidazoline-type) with techniques such as linear polarization resistance (LPR), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and potentiodynamic polarization. During these experiments, the state-of-the-art knowledge on corrosion inhibition available in the open literature related to corrosion inhibition was insufficient to explain specific experimental observations satisfactorily. This situation led to the postulation of ad hoc hypotheses to explain the effect of the organic corrosion inhibitors’ molecular structure on the observed electrochemical kinetics for the corrosion process, namely, the effects of inhibitor alkyl tail length and head group.

Book excerpt: "Mild steel is extensively used in equipment such as pipelines and machinery by many industries, where it is exposed to corrosive environments. Dissolved carbon dioxide (CO2) can be found in produced water and results in severe corrosion due to the formation of carbonic acid. CO2 corrosion presents not only an economic loss but also an environmental and safety risk. Most industries use synthetic inhibitors, which are effective in reducing corrosion, but are also toxic and persistent. This has led to stricter regulations and thus, there is a need for alternative inhibitors which can replace them but not exhibit their undesired characteristics. The aqueous extracts of Fig leaves (FLE), Calotropis procera (CPLE) and Eggplant peels (EPPE) were investigated as novel corrosion inhibitors for mild steel in a CO2-saturated 3.5wt% NaCl solution using various electrochemical techniques such as linear polarization resistance (LPR), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and cyclic sweep (CS). The results showed that the corrosion rate is decreasing and inhibition efficiency is increasing as the concentration of inhibitor increased. Corrosion inhibition efficiencies of 90-95% were obtained using low dosage of the green inhibitors. FLE, CPLE and EPPE proved to be effective inhibitors and are compared to the performance of two commercially available inhibitors, A (green inhibitor) and B (synthetic inhibitor). Polarization studies show that FLE, CPLE and EPPE act as mixed inhibitors. The adsorption data was analyzed using various adsorption isotherm models and the results at temperatures of 25, 40, 50 and 70°C have shown that the adsorption behavior of FLE, CPLE and EPPE is best described by the Langmuir adsorption isotherm. The conclusion drawn from this work is that the FLE, CLE and ELE inhibitors proved to be effective inhibitors when compared to Inhibitor A. Inhibitor B proved to be a much more effective inhibitor than the others due to its synergistic mix of active ingredients."--Abstract.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inorganic corrosion inhibitors including heavy metals have been widely used in the carbon dioxide (CO2) absorption process for corrosion control. However, they are not environmentally friendly causing costly handling and disposal costs. This work therefore evaluated corrosion inhibition performance of an organic amino acid compound, namely Methionine (MTI) which is less toxic, more readily biodegradable, and has lower potential for bioaccumulation in aquatic organisms compared to common amine absorption solvents. The evaluation was experimentally implemented using electrochemical and weight loss methods. Carbon steel (CS1018) and 5.0 kmol/m3 Monoethanolamine (MEA) purged with 85% CO2 and 15% oxygen (O2) were used as tested material and absorption solution, respectively. The electrochemical results showed that at solution temperatures up to 80oC, MTI effectively reduced corrosion rates of CS1018 with maximum inhibition efficiencies of 83.56% ± 1.82% under a static condition (0 rpm) and 74.96% ± 0.95% under a dynamic condition (1500 rpm). Its inhibition performance was found to increase with inhibitor concentration and solution temperature but decrease with rotational speed. MTI acted as a mixed-type inhibitor and exhibited pitting tendency. The optimal MTI concentrations were 1500 ppm at 0 rpm and 2000 ppm at 1500 rpm. The post data analysis involving adsorption isotherm and activation thermodynamic properties revealed that MTI protected metal surface by undergoing spontaneous and endothermic physical adsorption. Its adsorption characteristic matched well with the Langmuir adsorption isotherm, thereby suggesting that MTI formed a protective monolayer on the metal surface. The results of quantum chemical analysis suggested MTI has higher affinity, polarizability, and electron donating ability than MEA. III The results of weight loss experiments carried out for up to 28 days showed that at 120oC, 5 bar and 1500 rpm, MTI was able to reduce corrosion rates of CS1018 to below 1 mmpy. The inhibition efficiencies were up to 78.7% for carbon steel specimens fully immersed in the MEA solutions, 53.5% for those partially immersed in the MEA solution and partially exposed to vapor, and 85.6% for those fully exposed to vapor. Pits were observed on carbon steel specimens fully immersed in both uninhibited and MTI inhibited solutions.
