Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Electrical plants on-board modern cruise ships, offshore rigs and other naval vessels have nowadays reached a size and complexity comparable or even superior to big industrial plants and power plants. The continuous increase of the size of ships and the widely accepted adoption of electrical propulsion has led to the installation of HV (MV) power generation and distribution plants of very high power, tens of MW. Everybody who plans, manages or services these complex on-board power plants nowadays must have knowledge as well of HV plants and electrical machines, power converters, protection relays, of control and automation systems. This book intends to be an overview of technical features and planning issues of these electrical plants. It is meant to bear general validity, even if it is focused on larger ships with HV plants and electrical propulsion.

Download or read book Commercial Aircraft Propulsion and Energy Systems Research written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2016-08-09 with total page 123 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The primary human activities that release carbon dioxide (CO2) into the atmosphere are the combustion of fossil fuels (coal, natural gas, and oil) to generate electricity, the provision of energy for transportation, and as a consequence of some industrial processes. Although aviation CO2 emissions only make up approximately 2.0 to 2.5 percent of total global annual CO2 emissions, research to reduce CO2 emissions is urgent because (1) such reductions may be legislated even as commercial air travel grows, (2) because it takes new technology a long time to propagate into and through the aviation fleet, and (3) because of the ongoing impact of global CO2 emissions. Commercial Aircraft Propulsion and Energy Systems Research develops a national research agenda for reducing CO2 emissions from commercial aviation. This report focuses on propulsion and energy technologies for reducing carbon emissions from large, commercial aircraftâ€" single-aisle and twin-aisle aircraft that carry 100 or more passengersâ€"because such aircraft account for more than 90 percent of global emissions from commercial aircraft. Moreover, while smaller aircraft also emit CO2, they make only a minor contribution to global emissions, and many technologies that reduce CO2 emissions for large aircraft also apply to smaller aircraft. As commercial aviation continues to grow in terms of revenue-passenger miles and cargo ton miles, CO2 emissions are expected to increase. To reduce the contribution of aviation to climate change, it is essential to improve the effectiveness of ongoing efforts to reduce emissions and initiate research into new approaches.

Book excerpt: The Encyclopedia of Maritime and Offshore Engineering (EMOE) provides an unparalleled major reference work covering the design, construction and operation of ships, offshore installations and other marine structures used for transportation, exploration and the exploitation of ocean-based resources including oil, gas and renewable energy. It embraces all of the disciplines of engineering and naval architecture that are found in the complementary marine and offshore industries. Advances in ship technology, the growth of the offshore energy sector, and increasing activities in arctic and ultra-deepwater environments all highlight the need for an up-to-date reference work on the proposed scale. Operational and regulatory aspects of maritime industries will also be included. The technical sections are supported by the appropriate theoretical background information: for example, hydrodynamics and numerical analysis methods of fluid and stress analysis. The full editorial team and contributing authors is drawn worldwide from renowned engineers, scientists and practitioners in both the academic an industrial sectors.
Download or read book Propulsion Systems written by Alessandro Serpi and published by Intechopen. This book was released on 2019-10-07 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The transport sector is one of the most valuable sectors in the world. It represents the large oil consumers but still relies mainly on fossil fuels. Since the world trend in fossil fuel use is expected to increase further, a more sustainable transportation system is unavoidable to cope with emerging economic and social issues, such as massive energy consumption and emissions of pollutant gases. In this regard, this book provides an overview of some recent and promising technological advancements in propulsion systems, ranging from on-board components to different propulsion system architectures. In particular, the book aims at giving a brief but significant insight into propulsion system design and architecture, by covering different topics and application fields (road, marine, and aerospace).
