Immediately after starting the arc, and after sudden changes of current, originally formed part of Prof. Ayrton's ill-fated Chicago Paper, which, after being read at the Electrical Congress in 1893, was accidentally burnt in the Secretary's office, whilst awaiting publication. These highly important experiments were not only the first of their kind, but, as far as I know, they still remain unique. Most of the figures in the first chapter, all the experiments and curves that relate to cored carbons in the fourth and fifth, and some of those on hissing in the tenth, also belonged to this Chicago Paper, which was as full of suggestion as it was rich in accomplished work. Disposition for various types of joints and building up operations, electrode materials used, weld ability of various metals, weld composition, thermal disturbances of parts affected by the welding process, physical properties of completed welds, efficiency of welding equipments expressed in pounds of metal used or deposited per kilowatt hours, welding cost, etc. It is desired to lay particular stress on the fact that a very small percentage of the possibilities and advantages of arc weld ing, from an industrial standpoint, are being made use of at the present time, and if this work will result in a broader application of the art, as well as further and more extensive research, the authors will feel well repaid for their humble efforts. This is largely due to the difficulty of becoming familiar with the investigations which have been made on this subject. There have indeed been many articles published concerning it, but they are scattered through many publications, and the data given by different experimenters are not consistent with each other, and none of the explanations are entirely satisfactory. "The Electric Arc," by Mrs. Hertha Ayrton, gave an account of the experiments which were performed prior to 1898, but very little investigation had been made at that time of any arc except the open carbon arc, and none of the explanations based on the ionic theory had been given, so that by far the greater part of what is now known concerning the arc could not then be described. An excellent work in German, "Der elektrische Lichtbogen" by Berthold Monash, has more recently appeared, but this deals but briefly with the theoretical side and does not meet the requirements of those who would read English rather than German.
