Book Elder Abuse in the LGBTQ2SA Community

Download or read book Elder Abuse in the LGBTQ2SA Community written by Claire Robson and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-06-05 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes and analyzes the lived experience of elder abuse from the queer community. It discusses the experiences by transwomen, gay men and lesbians of financial abuse, physical and sexual abuse, homophobic abuse, and neglect within partner relationships, residential care, in home care, and religious organizations. Queer and trans elders have been described as ‘The Silent Generation’, since they have lived through times when their sexual and gender identities were criminalized and pathologized. The book shows that they are far more at risk to suffer abuse and neglect by those they should be able to trust, since they are more likely to have encountered all key risk factors, such as isolation, previous abuse and trauma, and mistrust of the health care system. Their vulnerability has been overlooked and this book addresses that gap. As such, this book provides a great resource to anyone working with elders, including medical professionals, care providers, police, counsellors, and policy makers.

Download or read book Elder Abuse in the Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Plus Communities written by Jen Marchbank and published by . This book was released on 2023 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This knowledge synthesis reports on the literature on the abuse of older adults who identify as 2SLGBT+ (Two-Spirit, lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, queer plus) published in the past decade (2013-2023). Although there is not a great deal of literature prior to 2013, what we do have indicates that 2SLGBT+ older adults face particular vulnerabilities that can make them experience elder abuse in ways that are specific to their communities and that can present additional barriers to their health and well-being."--SFU Summit Research Repository website.

Book Understanding Elder Abuse in Minority Populations

Download or read book Understanding Elder Abuse in Minority Populations written by Toshio Tatara and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-10-30 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1999. Research on elder abuse in the United States has made great strides in recent years. As a result, we have been able to define and discover the causes of elder abuse, design tools to assess the risk of abuse, develop and implement treatment and prevention strategies, and evaluate programs for victims and perpetrators. However, this research has been derived from studies whose subjects were primarily Caucasian. This is not because elder abuse does not take place in minority communities, but rather because researchers wanted first to study the issue in its broadest sense.

Book Elder Abuse and Its Prevention

Download or read book Elder Abuse and Its Prevention written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2014-03-18 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Elder Abuse and Its Prevention is the summary of a workshop convened in April 2013 by the Institute of Medicine's Forum on Global Violence Prevention. Using an ecological framework, this workshop explored the burden of elder abuse around the world, focusing on its impacts on individuals, families, communities, and societies. Additionally, the workshop addressed occurrences and co-occurrences of different types of abuse, including physical, sexual, emotional, and financial, as well as neglect. The ultimate objective was to illuminate promising global and multisectoral evidence-based approaches to the prevention of elder maltreatment. While the workshop covered scope and prevalence and unique characteristics of abuse, the intention was to move beyond what is known about elder abuse to foster discussions about how to improve prevention, intervention, and mitigation of the victims' needs, particularly through collaborative efforts. The workshop discussions included innovative intervention models and opportunities for prevention across sectors and settings. Violence and related forms of abuse against elders is a global public health and human rights problem with far-reaching consequences, resulting in increased death, disability, and exploitation with collateral effects on well-being. Data suggest that at least 10 percent of elders in the United States are victims of elder maltreatment every year. In low- and middle-income countries, where the burden of violence is the greatest, the figure is likely even higher. In addition, elders experiencing risk factors such as diminishing cognitive function, caregiver dependence, and social isolation are more vulnerable to maltreatment and underreporting. As the world population of adults aged 65 and older continues to grow, the implications of elder maltreatment for health care, social welfare, justice, and financial systems are great. However, despite the magnitude of global elder maltreatment, it has been an underappreciated public health problem. Elder Abuse and Its Prevention discusses the prevalence and characteristics of elder abuse around the world, risk factors for abuse and potential adverse health outcomes, and contextually specific factors, such as culture and the role of the community.

Book Gender Issues in Elder Abuse

Download or read book Gender Issues in Elder Abuse written by Lynda Aitken and published by SAGE Publications Limited. This book was released on 1996-12-23 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Filling a gap on the existing literature on elder abuse and gender, Gender Issues in Elder Abuse analyzes the ways in which gender is central to the occurrence, detection, and prevention of elder abuse. The authors identify the gendered nature of elder abuse and contend that most elderly victims are women and that in domestic and in institutional settings women abuse women. They also argue that a significant number of older women are abused by their sons, a significant number of older men are abused by their female partners and daughters, and abuse occurs by both sexes of nonrelatives and noncarers. This groundbreaking volume considers why much of the research on elder abuse has failed to engage with these facts. The authors call for a reframing of the issue of elder abuse, specifically in professional guidelines for dealing with abuse which, they insist, should include gender awareness. They argue for elder abuse to be considered as a human rights issue rather than a private problem. This book will be essential reading for academics, students, and professionals in social work, social policy, women's studies, and gerontology.
