Book A Primer on the Kinematics of Discrete Elastic Rods

Download or read book A Primer on the Kinematics of Discrete Elastic Rods written by M. Khalid Jawed and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-05-04 with total page 127 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This primer discusses a numerical formulation of the theory of an elastic rod, known as a discrete elastic rod, that was recently developed in a series of papers by Miklós Bergou et al. Their novel formulation of discrete elastic rods represents an exciting new method to simulate and analyze the behavior of slender bodies that can be modeled using an elastic rod. The formulation has been extensively employed in computer graphics and is highly cited. In the primer, we provide relevant background from both discrete and classical differential geometry so a reader familiar with classic rod theories can appreciate, comprehend, and use Bergou et al.’s computational efficient formulation of a nonlinear rod theory. The level of coverage is suitable for graduate students in mechanics and engineering sciences.

Book Stability Theory Of Elastic Rods

Download or read book Stability Theory Of Elastic Rods written by Teodor Atanackovic and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1997-01-16 with total page 441 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book treats stability problems of equilibrium states of elastic rods. Euler energy and dynamical methods of stability analysis are introduced and stability criteria for each method is developed. Stability analysis is accompanied by a number of classical conservative and non-conservative, two- and three-dimensional problems. Some problems are treated by all three methods. Many generalized versions of known problems are presented (heavy vertical rod, rotating rod, Greenhill's problem, Beck's column, Pflüger's rod, strongest column, etc.). The generalizations consist in using either a generalized form of constitutive equations or a more general form of loading, or both. Special attention is paid to the influence of shear stresses and axis compressibility on the value of the critical load. Variational methods are applied to obtain estimates of the critical load and maximal deflection in the post-critical state, in a selected number of examples.

Book Nonlinear Mechanics of Elastic Rods Constrained to Deform on Rigid Tubular Surfaces

Download or read book Nonlinear Mechanics of Elastic Rods Constrained to Deform on Rigid Tubular Surfaces written by Rehan Shah and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Slender, elastic rod-like structures on or inside constrained rigid surfaces are prevalent in a wide range of engineering (drill strings in borewells, pipelines under the seabed, ocean cables), medical (stents in angioplasty of arteries), biological (DNA toroidal condensates, bacterial flagella), electronic (carbon nanotubes) and robotic (soft robots for in-pipe inspection) applications. The tendency of such rods to deform by bending, twisting, buckling or coiling into complex geometrical shapes when subjected to applied end loads can be investigated using techniques from mathematical modelling and nonlinear dynamics. However, despite some work being done in this field, a comprehensive study analysing the bifurcations and configurations of surface-constrained elastic rods is still lacking. Past research on the subject has primarily used the special Cosserat director theory of rods to exclusively obtain specialised sinusoidal, helical or localised homoclinic solutions. In light of this, the purpose of this thesis is to employ a more comprehensive variational theory of elastic two-strand braids to investigate the post-buckling behaviour of end-loaded rods subject to cylindrical and toroidal surface constraints. Methods comprising the calculus of variations and Lagrangian and Hamiltonian mechanics are utilised to procure more general types of solutions to various nonlinear boundary value problems, using both analytical and numerical approaches. The key results obtained include the determination of critical compressive and torsional buckling loads for straight rods on a cylinder and an open torus, physically realistic and purely helical solutions for helical rods on a cylinder, critical surface lift-off loads and threshold twist values for heavy rods on a cylinder and applied torsion and twist-bend instability solutions for curved rods on a closed torus. The work also comprises the development of two, new frictional contact models to investigate physically meaningful problems for rods lying on frictional rigid surfaces and a self-contained Euler-Lagrange theoretical formulation to acquire all governing equations from a single constraint-inclusive energy functional.

Book Classical and Generalized Models of Elastic Rods

Download or read book Classical and Generalized Models of Elastic Rods written by D. Iesan and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2008-11-14 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reflecting new developments in the study of Saint-Venant's problem, Classical and Generalized Models of Elastic Rods focuses on the deformation of elastic cylinders for three models of continuum: classical elastic continuum, Cosserat elastic body, and porous elastic material. The author presents a method to construct Saint-Venant's solutions, minim

Book On direct and inverse problems related to longitudinal impact of non uniform elastic rods

Download or read book On direct and inverse problems related to longitudinal impact of non uniform elastic rods written by Burgert, Jens and published by KIT Scientific Publishing. This book was released on 2021-05-07 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The impact of two non-uniform elastic rods is considered and a recursive method was developed that solves the inverse problem: Find the location-dependent impedance function of the impacting rod that generates a prescribed impact force. The developed method delivers exact solutions in closed-form. Moreover, a condition is derived which states if a physically meaningful solution exists. Finally, the underlying 1D model has been validated experimentally.

Book Coiling of Elastic Rods on Rigid Substrates

Download or read book Coiling of Elastic Rods on Rigid Substrates written by Mohammad Khalid Jawed and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We investigate the deployment of a thin elastic rod onto a rigid substrate and study the resulting coiling patterns. In our approach, we combine precision model experiments, scaling analyses, and computer simulations towards developing predictive understanding of the coiling process. Both cases of deposition onto static and moving substrates are considered. We construct phase diagrams for the possible coiling patterns, e.g. meandering, stretched coiling, alternating loops, and translated coiling, and characterize them as a function of the geometric and material properties of the rod, as well as the height and relative speeds of deployment. The various modes selected and their characteristic length-scales are found to arise from a complex interplay between gravitational, bending, and twisting energies of the rod, coupled to the geometric nonlinearities intrinsic to their large deformations. We give particular emphasis to the first sinusoidal mode of instability, which we find to be consistent with a Hopf bifurcation, and rationalize the meandering wavelength and amplitude. Throughout, we systematically vary natural curvature of the rod as a control parameter, which has a qualitative and quantitative effect on the pattern formation, above a critical value that we determine. Upon establishing excellent quantitative agreement between experiments and simulations with no fitting parameters, we perform a numerical survey to relate the pattern size to the relevant length-scales arising from material properties and the setup geometry, and quantify the typical strain levels in the rod. The universality conferred by the prominent role of geometry in the deformation modes of the rod suggests using the gained understanding as design guidelines, in the original applications that motivated the study. These include the coiling of carbon nanotubes and the deployment of submarine cables and pipelines onto the seabed.
