Book excerpt: This report summarizes some preliminary results obtained during the development of a computer program capable of analyzing the circumferential ridging which occurs in candu nuclear reactor fuel elements. an example of these severe localized sheath strain concentrations is shown schematically in figure 1. such deformation, which is caused by the complex interactions occurring between uo2 fuel pellets and their cladding, can result in cracks extending through the clad so that its ability to retain radioactive fission products is lost. although the possibility of a fuel element defecting at circumferential ridges is of some interest now, such interest will increase significantly in the near future when it becomes necessary to design fuel that can survive in a reactor whose power output has daily or weekly cycles. to aid in the design of fuel for such a load following reactor, it would be desirable to have an accurate simulation of ridging behaviour so that it would not be necessary to experimentally examine every possible design variation for load following fuel. furthermore, it would be advantageous if this simulation required sufficiently little computing time that a fuel designer could make extensive use of it. in the work currently being done at wcl it is intended to identify a description for the behaviour of a segment of a fuel element in an analysis that contains the maximum number of time saving approximations. the work being documented in this report is an extension of a previously reported(1) simple thermo-elastic calculation of the hourglassing expansion for a short, cylindrical, heat-producing pellet and the corresponding elastic ridging deformation and stress concentration in a thin-wall tube which contained this pellet. the previous report performed independent calculations for both the pellet and clad, except that they both were acted upon by a set of equal (but oppositely directed) interaction forces. this calculation technique, which is the same as that used for a similar calculation procedure being developed in the united kingdom(2,3) was chosen because it was expected to result in a significantly simpler and less time consuming calculation than if the pellet and clad were considered to be portions of a single system with their behaviour being simulated simultaneously. it is the possibility of extending such a calculation technique, so that the thermo-elastic-plastic behaviour for a segment of a fuel element could be simulated, that is currently being investigated. hence the pellet and clad computer programs have been left independent and the capability for describing plastic flow is intended to be added to each of them. this addition was first made to the pellet program since it is the thermal expansion of uo2 fuel pellets which causes them to deform into an hourglass shape and be a driving force for the circumferential ridging of the zircaloy cladding which contains them. the resulting predictions for the thermo-elastic-plastic behaviour of a pellet are documented in this report.
