Book Poverty and Welfare Among the Portuguese Jews in Early Modern Amsterdam

Download or read book Poverty and Welfare Among the Portuguese Jews in Early Modern Amsterdam written by Tirtsah Levie Bernfeld and published by Liverpool University Press. This book was released on 2012-07-05 with total page 609 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The reputed wealth and benevolence of the Portuguese Jews of early modern Amsterdam attracted many impoverished people to the city, both ex-Conversos from the Iberian peninsula and Jews from many other countries. In describing the consequences of that migration in terms of demography, admission policy, charitable institutions—public and private—philanthropy and daily life, and the dynamics of the relationship between the rich and the poor, Tirtsah Levie Bernfeld adds a nuanced new dimension to the understanding of Jewish life in the early modern period.

Book Ecosystem Ecology and Geochemistry of Cuatro Cienegas

Download or read book Ecosystem Ecology and Geochemistry of Cuatro Cienegas written by Felipe García-Oliva and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-10-12 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Carbon (C), Nitrogen (N) and Phosphorus (P) are three of the most important elements used to build living beings, and their uptake from the environment is consequently essential for all organisms. Photosynthesis is the process in which plants absorb atmospheric C as they grow and convert it to biomass. However, plants acquire N and P only when these are available in the soil solution, which makes these elements the most limiting nutrients in plant growth and productivity in most ecosystems. When plant residues and roots decompose, the C, N and P they contain is transformed primarily into soil organic matter (SOM) or C and N can release to the atmosphere. Recent interest on the global C, N and P cycles has focused attention on the different proportion of terrestrial C, N and P stored in different ecosystem pools. Cuatro Cienegas represents an exceptional place, since the plants are not the base of the food web, they are the microbial community, that recycle the elements essential for life. In this book we describe how this is an analog of early Earth.

Download or read book Roots of Insurgency written by Brian R. Hamnett and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2002-05-02 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Studies in Spanish American regional history have, as yet, made little attempt to incorporate the struggles for independence within the context of provincial society and politics viewed over the broader period that spans the late colonial and early national experience of Latin America. This book attempts a new perspective: it emphasises the provincial milieu and popular participation in its varied forms, often ambiguous and contradictory. The central aim is to examine social conflicts, chiefly in the Mexican provinces of Puebla, Guadalajara, Michoacán, and Guanajuato from the middle of the eighteenth century, and to assess their relationship to the widespread insurgency of the second decade of the nineteenth century.
