Book El Terrible Life and Labor in Pueblonuevo 1887 1939

Download or read book El Terrible Life and Labor in Pueblonuevo 1887 1939 written by Patricia A. Schechter and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-07-12 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a biography of Pueblonuevo del Terrible, a mining town located in Andalusia, Spain. Based on previously unexamined sources, the study paints a fresh portrait of industrial workers and their families in Córdoba province, enriching our understanding of this mostly agricultural region. Previous studies of laboring communities in Spain have identified radical workers, miners among them, as a destabilizing element due to their insurgent protest activity, including lethal violence. This study, by contrast, describes both worker activism and cross-class organizing as constructive, not destructive, and aimed at integration into Spanish society. Economically, the mining zone was dominated by a French company in the Rothschild portfolio. But by running their own city, waging peaceful labor strikes, raising a church, building housing, and honoring their dead, residents turned a quasi-colonial outpost into a pueblo worth defending, and they rallied in defense of the Republic at the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War. In the making of Pueblonuevo del Terrible, Spanish men and women contended with the perils of mine work, the jolts of industrial capitalism, creeping fascism, and civil war. As such, this book tells a village-scale story of global events that defined the twentieth century.

Book Goya The Terrible Sublime A Graphic Novel

Download or read book Goya The Terrible Sublime A Graphic Novel written by El Torres and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2019-03-05 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Celebrated artist Francisco de Goya confronts demons real and imagined in this vivid portrayal of the end of his life. Francisco de Goya is considered one of the most important Spanish painters of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, last of the Greats and first of the modernists. But his sumptuous images stemmed from a mind in torment, especially later in his life. Goya: The Terrible Sublime is a graphic novel inspired by Goya’s life, in particular focusing on his final years, as he struggles with assorted physical ailments that threaten to take his mind, as well. Recovering from a serious illness in Cadiz, Spain, which has left him deaf, Goya suffers from terrible headaches, high fevers, and hallucinations, beset by visions of death that will become all too real with the advent of the Spanish War of Independence. Still, the monsters in his delusions are not real—but his friend Asensio Julia is, and he belongs to another world. From the mind of the terror master El Torres and the art of Fran Galán comes a terrifying story that brings readers into the artist’s world of madness and dark paintings, a historical miasma populated by recognizable figures like Manuel Godoy and the Duchess of Alba and swathed in an aesthetic of cobweb-shrouded palaces and beautiful grotesques living in the shadows. This unique graphic novel tells a horror story, melding the artist’s unique style and vision with the story of a man plagued by unreality. Yet even as the artist faces dreadful images of witchcraft and pure evil, he knows that he must not fall into what lurks beyond the dream of reason.

Book Popular Texts in English

Download or read book Popular Texts in English written by Antonio Ballesteros González and published by Univ de Castilla La Mancha. This book was released on 2001 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book comprises a collection of articles devoted to the academic study of popular texts in English. Authors analyse genres which had been habitually looked down on by canonical approaches to literature and art. They take into serious consideration forms like horror literature, the gothic, fantasy, de-tective fiction, science fiction, best-sellers, films and television series of different kinds... among some other representations of what conservative scholars had been considering as marginal. The referential richness of the perspectives reflected here demonstrates that popular texts can be enjoyable for readers and audiences, at the same time that they can be significant in order to reach a better understanding of our culture and ourselves at the beginning of a new millennium.

Book El Inmortal

  • ISBN : 1463318278
  • Pages : 369 pages

Download or read book El Inmortal written by Sebastián Salado and published by Palibrio. This book was released on 2012-07 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Download or read book La Historia Secreta de los Jesuitas written by Edmond Paris and published by Chick Publications. This book was released on 2011 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
