Book Indonesia Wages and Employment

Download or read book Indonesia Wages and Employment written by Constantino Lluch and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As part of a continuing effort to assess wage and employment conditions in Indonesia, this report focuses on labour market conditions. The population has grown at a faster than expected rate which means that the labour force will grow faster than expected as well. In addition, output growth over the eighties is not expected to be as fast as in the past. The implications for employment and labour incomes of these factors vary according to alternative workings of the labour markets. Therefore, alternative views on how labour markets work have important and different implications for policy. A primary objective of this report is to point out these implications and to promote further study of labour markets in Indonesia. It differs from the previous view, suggesting that quality of labour does not explain wage differentials, that the problem of underutilization of young people is too great to be explained by models highlighting transitional job searching, and that social forces and economic forces which do not lead to the clearing of the labour market play a large role in the determination of wages. These factors have important consequences for policy, including the need to consider employment creation as a separate objective.

Book Debt Relief for the Poorest Countries

Download or read book Debt Relief for the Poorest Countries written by Yiagadeesen Samy and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-02-06 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The debt problems of poor countries are receiving unprecedented attention. Both federal and non-governmental organizations alike have been campaigning for debt forgiveness for poor countries. The governments of creditor nations responded to that challenge at a meeting sponsored by the G-7, International Monetary Fund, and World Bank, all of which upgraded debt relief as a policy priority. Their initiatives provided for generous interpretations of these nations' abilities to sustain debt, gave them opportunities to qualify for debt relief more rapidly, and linked debt relief to broader policies of poverty reduction. Despite this, the crisis has only deepened in the first years of the new millennium. This brilliant group of contributions assesses why this has occurred. In plain language, it considers why debt relief has been so long in coming for poor countries. It evaluates the cost of a persistent overhang in debt for those countries. It also examines, head on, whether enhanced debt relief initiatives offer a permanent exit from over-indebtedness, or are merely a short-term respite. Above all, this volume for the first time addresses the issues on the ground: that is, the views and opinions about debt relief on the part of leaders in advanced nations, and the probability of further support for the most impoverished lands. In this approach, the editors and contributors have made an explicit and successful attempt to be inclusive and relevant at all stages of the analysis. This volume covers the full range of the poorest countries, with contributions by John Serieux, Lykke Anderson and Osvaldo Nina, Befekadu Degefe, Ligia Maria Castro-Monge, and Peter B. Mijumbi. Collectively, they offer a sobering scenario: unless measures are put in place now, in anticipation of further crises, the future of the very poorest nations will remain bleak and troublesome.

Book Growth Employment and Equity

Download or read book Growth Employment and Equity written by Barbara Stallings and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2010-12-01 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Brookings Institution Press and Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) publication In the last ten to fifteen years, the Latin American and Caribbean region has undergone the most significant transformation of economic policy since World War II. Through a series of structural reforms, an increasing number of countries have moved from closed, state-dominated economies to ones that are more market oriented and open to the rest of the world. Policymakers expected that these changes, in conjunction with lower rates of inflation and increased spending in the social area, would speed up economic growth, increase productivity, and lead to the creation of more jobs and greater equality. Have those expectations been fulfilled? Analyzing the impact of the reforms in nine countries (Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Jamaica, Mexico, Peru), this study provides a detailed picture of progress to date. At the overall regional level, the book suggests, the reforms have had a surprisingly small impact: a small positive impact on investment and growth, and a small negative impact on employment and income distribution. But at the country, sectoral, and microeconomic levels, it finds evidence of strong effects, with some units doing very well and others falling behind.

Download or read book Fundamentos de los sistemas de implementaci n de protecci n social written by Kathy Lindert and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2023-01-13 with total page 735 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Economic Reforms Growth and Employment

Download or read book Economic Reforms Growth and Employment written by Jürgen Weller and published by United Nations Publications. This book was released on 2001 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the last ten to fifteen years, profound structural reforms have moved Latin America and the Caribbean from closed, state-dominated economies to ones that are more market-oriented and open. Policymakers expected that these changes would speed up growth. This book is part of a multi-year project to determine whether these expectation have been fulfilled. Analysing the impact of the reforms on employment it is argued that expectations were not fulfilled with respect to the operation of the labour markets. The reforms limited the expansion of employment in some sectors, particularly in tradeable goods. They also created a bias in labour demad for better educated workers which exacerbates inequality. It is thus made clear that the region faces major challenges both in increasing the number of jobs and improving job equality.
