Book excerpt: La propuesta central de este trabajo fue la de analizar en los discursos del Licenciado Méndez Nieto, en la obra de Alonso de Sandoval, en los testimonios escritos sobre Pedro Claver, y en las Cartas de los Obispos, la transición del los variados indicios que nos remitieron a viejos y nuevos elementos presentes en sus prácticas e intercambios fragmentarios y temporales, que se fueron integrando a sus identidades tanto individuales como colectivas. El eje del análisis se centró, de esta manera, no en las experiencias de esas mujeres que habitaron en ese momento particular la ciudad de Cartagena, sino en los discursos que sobre ellas se escribieron, en las necesidades o fallas femeninas que motivaron a sus autores y en algunos casos, a los intercambios que ellos suscitaron. Se indagaron las fuentes para buscar en ellas indicios de los actores sociales, en este caso las mujeres, y en la incorporación de nuevos elementos culturales descritos en los discursos nos aventuramos en la compresión, y en los posibles significados de los hechos sociales. El eje del análisis se centró, de esta manera, no en las experiencias de esas mujeres que habitaron en ese momento particular la ciudad de Cartagena, sino en los discursos que sobre ellas se escribieron, en las necesidades o fallas femeninas que motivaron a sus autores y en algunos casos, a los intercambios que ellos suscitaron. Ingram focuses on these converts and their descendants (known as conversos) not as Judaizers, but as Christian humanists, mystics and evangelists, who attempt to create a new society based on quietist religious practice, merit, and toleration. His narrative takes the reader on a journey from the late fourteenth-century conversions and the first blood purity laws (designed to marginalize conversos), through the early sixteenth-century Erasmian and radical mystical movements, to a Counter-Reformation environment in which conversos become the advocates for pacifism and concordance. His account ends at the court of Philip IV, where growing intolerance towards Madrid’s converso courtiers is subtly attacked by Spain’s greatest painter, Diego Velázquez, in his work, Los Borrachos. Finally, Ingram examines the historiography of early modern Spain, in which he argues the converso reform phenomenon continues to be underexplored.

The study of social space in any human group is fraught with limitations, and to these we must add the further limits involved in the study of childhood. Here specialists from archaeology, history, literature, architecture, didactics, museology and anthropology build a body of theoretical and methodological approaches about how space is articulated and organized around children and how this disposition affects the creation and maintenance of social identities. Children are considered as the main actors in historic dynamics of social change, from prehistory to the present day. Notions on space, childhood and the construction of both the individual and the group identity of children are considered as a prelude to papers that focus on analyzing and identifying the spaces which contribute to the construction of children’s identity during their lives: the places they live, learn, socialize and play. A final section deals with these same aspects, but focuses on funerary contexts, in which children may lose their capacity to influence events, as it is adults who establish burial strategies and practices. In each case authors ask questions such as: how do adults construct spaces for children? How do children manage their own spaces? How do people (adults and children) build (invisible and/or physical) boundaries and spaces?

Both the apologists and detractors of mission enterprise have concentrated solely on the missionaries, regarding the native populations either as childlike beneficiaries or as mutely suffering victims. With the growth of ethnohistory as a field of research, new research has sought to reconstruct the situations, the reactions, and the strategies of native groups, thereby seeing the native peoples of the Americas as active agents in their own history. In Mission Culture on the Upper Amazon, David Block describes the formation of a new society in the Moxos region of the Amazon Basin, in what is now northern, or lowland, Bolivia. This society began with the arrival of the Jesuits in the region. The mutual synthesis that became Jesuit mission culture followed, with Moxos Indian cultural survival and adaptation continuing after the expulsion of the Jesuits in 1767. With the cataclysmic onset of the rubber boom, the entire region was plunged into a period of severe exploitation and conflict that persists to this day. Block’s nuanced treatment of the mission encounter—one extending over a large time period—permits a balanced understanding of the mission enterprise, native response, and the cultural synthesis that ensued.
