Download or read book The Virgin of Guadalupe and the Conversos written by Marie-Theresa Hernández and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 2014-07-15 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hidden lives, hidden history, and hidden manuscripts. In The Virgin of Guadalupe and the Conversos, Marie-Theresa Hernández unmasks the secret lives of conversos and judaizantes and their likely influence on the Catholic Church in the New World. The terms converso and judaizante are often used for descendants of Spanish Jews (the Sephardi, or Sefarditas as they are sometimes called), who converted under duress to Christianity in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. There are few, if any, archival documents that prove the existence of judaizantes after the Spanish expulsion of the Jews in 1492 and the Portuguese expulsion in 1497, as it is unlikely that a secret Jew in sixteenth-century Spain would have documented his allegiance to the Law of Moses, thereby providing evidence for the Inquisition. On a Da Vinci Code – style quest, Hernández persisted in hunting for a trove of forgotten manuscripts at the New York Public Library. These documents, once unearthed, describe the Jewish/Christian religious beliefs of an early nineteenth-century Catholic priest in Mexico City, focusing on the relationship between the Virgin of Guadalupe and Judaism. With this discovery in hand, the author traces the cult of Guadalupe backwards to its fourteenth-century Spanish origins. The trail from that point forward can then be followed to its interface with early modern conversos and their descendants at the highest levels of the Church and the monarchy in Spain and Colonial Mexico. She describes key players who were somehow immune to the dangers of the Inquisition and who were allowed the freedom to display, albeit in a camouflaged manner, vestiges of their family's Jewish identity. By exploring the narratives produced by these individuals, Hernández reveals the existence of those conversos and judaizantes who did not return to the “covenantal bond of rabbinic law,” who did not publicly identify themselves as Jews, and who continued to exhibit in their influential writings a covert allegiance and longing for a Jewish past. This is a spellbinding and controversial story that offers a fresh perspective on the origins and history of conversos.
Download or read book Death in the City written by Kathryn A. Sloan and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2017 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "At the turn of the twentieth century, many observers considered suicide to be a worldwide social problem that had reached epidemic proportions. This idea was especially powerful in Mexico City, where tragic and violent deaths in public urban spaces seemed commonplace in a city undergoing rapid modernization. Crime rates mounted, corpses piled up in the morgue, and the media reported on sensational cases of murder and suicide. More troublesome still, a compelling death wish appeared to grip women and youth. Drawing on an extensive range of sources, from judicial records to the popular press, Death in the City examines the cultural meanings of death and self-destruction in modern Mexico. The author examines approaches and responses to suicide and death, disproving the long-held belief that Mexicans possessed a cavalier response to death"--Provided by publisher.
Download or read book Omar Cabezas Nicaragua and the Narrative of Liberation written by José María Mantero and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2019-06-26 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout his political and military career, Omar Cabezas fought to transform Nicaragua, to implement the ethics that had led him to participate in the armed struggle against Anastasio Somoza’s regime, and to be active during the 1980s and 1990s as a member of the National Congress. Omar Cabezas, Nicaragua, and the Narrative of Liberation: To the Revolution and Beyond surveys the foundations of liberation discourse as it relates to the work of Omar Cabezas. It examines themes associated with Nicaraguan and Latin American culture and literature, considering key issues of national liberation and identity in the wake of the Sandinista revolution. By contextualizing the research within a continental and national perspective and using concepts such as utopia, orality, and humor to frame the discussion on national liberation , Mantero shows the symbiotic relationship between the work of Cabezas and the reformulation of Nicaraguan identity in the post-revolution.

Download or read book War by Other Means written by Carlota McAllister and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2013-10-14 with total page 403 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between 1960 and 1996, Guatemala's civil war claimed 250,000 lives and displaced one million people. Since the peace accords, Guatemala has struggled to address the legacy of war, genocidal violence against the Maya, and the dismantling of alternative projects for the future. War by Other Means brings together new essays by leading scholars of Guatemala from a range of geographical backgrounds and disciplinary perspectives. Contributors consider a wide range of issues confronting present-day Guatemala: returning refugees, land reform, gang violence, neoliberal economic restructuring, indigenous and women's rights, complex race relations, the politics of memory, and the challenges of sustaining hope. From a sweeping account of Guatemalan elites' centuries-long use of violence to suppress dissent to studies of intimate experiences of complicity and contestation in richly drawn localities, War by Other Means provides a nuanced reckoning of the injustices that made genocide possible and the ongoing attempts to overcome them.
