Download or read book Eduardo Chib s written by Ilan Ehrlich and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2015-03-26 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comprehensive biography of Eduardo René Chibás (1907–1951) traces the life and times of Cuba’s most popular and charismatic politician during the late 1940s and early 1950s. Chibás, whose admirers included young Fidel Castro, emphasized honesty in Cuban public life and promised to sweep away corrupt politicians during his popular Sunday broadcasts. His ties with supporters, many of whom knew him simply as “Eddy,” were closer and more informal than any previous Cuban politician. During his 1948 presidential campaign, Chibás often hurled himself into the arms of adoring supporters after speeches. Such gestures were met with wonder and disgust by politicians more accustomed to buying votes than winning hearts. His suicide in 1951 dashed the dreams of his followers—who hoped he would deliver an honest government that provided services for the island’s poor and respected Cuba’s progressive 1940 constitution. His death, which was followed seven months hence by a military coup and eight years later by Castro’s revolution, represents one of the great what ifs of Cuban politics. This seminal work explores Chibás’s life in order to explain the nature of Cuban politics from the mid-twentieth century to today.
Download or read book Graham Greene s Narrative in Spain written by Mónica Olivares Leyva and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2015-10-13 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume provides a detailed description of the literary contact between Graham Greene and Franco’s Spain. Part I describes the most significant political events that affected the Spanish book industry under this regime, with the first chapter offering an account of the methods of control created to exercise authoritative influence over the cultural scene. Part II explores critical studies of Greene’s artistic output in Franco’s Spain, and the second chapter investigates literary critics’ evaluations of the author as published in the national press, magazines and journals, as well as in the prologues, introductions and prefaces to his books. Parts III and IV study the role played by the book industry in the reception of the writer in Spain, as well as the obstacles it faced at the censorship office. Accordingly, chapters three to six provide the names of the publishers and booksellers who attempted to disseminate his work throughout the country. Using the censorship files, these chapters measure with great precision publishers’ interest in Greene’s works, and establish the power Franco’s censorship wielded over the reception of his literature in Spain. The final section of the book brings together a number of significant conclusions developed throughout this study. As such, Graham Greene’s Narrative in Spain provides the reader with a comprehensive overview of the roles played by national literary criticism and the book industry in the reception of the author’s works in Franco's Spain, as well as of the influence exerted by the regime throughout the whole publishing process.

Download or read book Fifteenth Century Studies written by Edelgard E. DuBruck and published by Camden House. This book was released on 2008 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Articles on drama, letter-writing, Arthurian romances, translation, mythology and folklore, print media, and Pizan, Sachs, Schedel, Chartier, and Henryson. The fifteenth century defies consensus on fundamental issues; most scholars agree, however, that this period outgrew the Middle Ages, that it was a time of transition and a passage to modern times. Founded in 1977 as the publication organ for the Fifteenth-Century Symposia, Fifteenth-Century Studies offers essays on diverse aspects of the fifteenth century, including liberal and fine arts, historiography, medicine, and religion. Following the standard opening article on the current state of fifteenth-century drama research, volume 33 offers essays investigating authors such as Christine de Pizan, Hans Sachs, Hartmann Schedel, Alain Chartier, and Robert Henryson. Genres and themes treated include drama, epistles of persuasion, late Arthurian romances, translations, mythology and folklore, print media, and art appreciation. Alternative interpretations are afforded by Franco Mormando's study of male nakedness and the Franciscans. Twelve book reviews round out the volume. Contributors: Edelgard E. DuBruck, Tracy Adams, Lidia Amor, Roció del Río Fernández, Leonardas Vytautas Gerulaitis, Jonathan Green, Christiane J. Hessler, Ashby Kinch, Franco Mormondo, Alessandra Petrina. Edelgard E. DuBruck is Professor Emerita of French and Humanities at Marygrove College, Detroit, Michigan, and Barbara I. Gusick is Professor Emerita of English atTroy University, Dothan, Alabama.

Download or read book Freedom and Existence written by Matthew Aaron Tennant and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2023-08-07 with total page 411 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is theology a dead corpse or living organism? For Uruguayan Jesuit Juan Luis Segundo (1925-1996), theology is dynamic. Freedom and existence for central themes. Segundo believed that theology should be transformative in human lives. For a theology to be transformative, there must be a connection to existence. That is, it must be existential. Yet most scholars have overlooked this assumption in critical analyses of liberation theology. This prima facie connection to existence is distinguishable from existentialism as a school of philosophy. By showing the significant existential dimension to Segundo's theology, assessing his work and contribution to twentieth-century theology relates to freedom, ecumenism, the role of faith in society, and the relationship between faith and ideologies.

Download or read book Experiences of War in Europe and the Americas 1792 1815 written by Mark Lawrence and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2021-07-20 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work seeks to offer a new way of viewing the French Wars of 1792–1815. Most studies of this period offer international, political, and military analyses using the French Revolution and Napoleon as the prime mover. But this book focuses on military and civilian responses to French Revolutionary and Napoleonic wars, throughout the rest of Europe and the Americas. It shows how the unprecedented mobilization of this era forged a generation of soldiers and civilians sharing a common experience of suffering, bequeathing the West with a new veteran sensibility. Using a range of sources, especially memoirs, this book reveals the adventure and suffering confronting ordinary soldiers campaigning in Europe and the Americas, and the burdens imposed on civilians enduring rising and falling empires across the West. It also reveals how the wars liberated slaves, serfs, and common people through revolutions and insurgencies.
