It is neither an exhaustive treatment of the problem of Otherness in anthropological theory nor a definitive analysis of the various forms of represented, practiced, and contested alterities in Latin American history. Rather, the authors have been brought together by several common concerns. The first is an interest in exploring and understanding some of the ways in which Otherness structures social relations at the everyday as well as the national levels. The second is a theoretical and methodological question of how the perspective which foregrounds the Other at the expense of the Self might make the anthropological inquiry more effective and emancipatory. Thirdly, the authors are interested in how they can, as researchers, teachers, and citizens, help overcome cleavages which group identities constantly produce in the body of humanity. The Others that the authors of this book explore include indigenous peoples, mestizos, African slaves, women, insurgent peasants, as well as hybrid groups (re-)claiming a new identity. While each of the eight authors focuses on social phenomena from different time periods and parts of Latin America, they all share as their common denominator the Spanish colonization of the continent which set off a series of events whose consequences eventually exceeded the wildest fantasies of the boldest thinkers of these times. The authors particularly focus on the visual representation and performance of alterity, but also give room to some non-visual ways in which Otherness is established and subverted. Inevitably, this volume presents a diverse selection of contributions which nevertheless share some common problems, concerns and hopes, which in their totality provide a complex picture of Otherness in everyday life in historical and contemporary Latin America.

The intersections of religion and gender are here explored, based on an understanding that both are socially constructed. Far from being static, as so often presented in world religions textbooks, religious traditions are constantly in flux, responding to historical, cultural and social contexts. So too is ‘the’ Sikh tradition in terms of practices, ideologies, rituals, and notions of identity. We here conclude that ‘a’ Sikh tradition does not exist; instead, there are numerous forms thereof. In this volume, Sikhism is presented as a collection of ‘Sikh traditions’. Gender studies—in line with women’s liberation, masculine and feminist studies have long examined and have long deconstructed the patriarchy, but also move to identify other subordinate-dominant relations between individuals. Indeed, there are numerous forms of discrimination and power structures that simultaneously create a multiplicity of oppression. Intersectionality has become the basis of an increasingly systematized production of contemporary discourses on feminism and gender analysis, as is evidenced by the varied contributions in this volume.

By exploring these three episodes, the book shows how Latin America’s postcolonialism involved specific spatial dynamics that were inherently working over global socio-political geographies resulting from the legacy of a “long” colonial imagination. The text is divided into two parts. The first part discusses some theoretical questions concerning the very conceptualization of Latin American space and the importance of exploring a genealogy of its urban geographies. The second part analyses the themes proposed through the discussion of the “materiality” of specific historical examples. The section delves into urban transformations in the aforementioned capital cities and focuses on how iconic material forms are able to encapsulate the main socio-political features defining each country’s post-colonial project. A contemporary practice, mobility, yet different according to the place one is speaking from: perpetual present and pure space, deterritorialised, for the globalised; impossibility of the present and physically confined space for the localised. The uses of time and space are clearly differentiated and at the same time they themselves differentiate. The pursuit of happiness, the desire for escape, the discovery of the Other and the return to nature are, according to some tourism analysts, the generators of the imaginaries of desire when it comes to embarking on a journey. A critical analysis of these constructed imaginaries which will reveal some of the mechanisms which induce that desire in capitalist society has been the impulse behind this project. Tour-isms is structured through two interconnected realities, the ''tourist-subject'', a subject who activates environments and standardised memories legitimised by the individuality of experience and exploration; and an agent of transformation, a social player actively involved in processes of transformation of the territories s/he visits. And the ''touristified spaces'', which reveal some of the economic, political and cultural processes which impose new forms of socialisation and new uses and behaviours on the borders of private and public, what is and what can be historical. Tour-isms does not set out to make a totalising analysis of tourism or to offer a historical future for it, nor does it wish to propose a superficial criticism of tourism or the tourist or to establish new models for this practice.
