Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Traditional Scholars have often looked at African American studies through the lens of European theories, resulting in the secondarization of the African American presence in Europe and its contributions to European culture. Blackening Europe reverses this pattern by using African American culture as the starting point for a discussion of its influences over traditional European structures. Evidence of Europe's blackening abound, form French ministers of Hip-hop and British incarnations of "Shaft" to slavery memorial in the Netherlands and German youth sporting dreadlocks. Collecting essays by scholars from both sides of the Atlantic and fields as diverse as history, literature, politics, social studies, art, film and music, Blackening Europe explores the implications of these cultural hybrids and extends the growing dialogues about Europe's fascination with African America.

Book African American Women s Literature in Spain

Download or read book African American Women s Literature in Spain written by Sandra Llopart Babot and published by Universitat de València. This book was released on 2023-05-31 with total page 732 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume brings forward a descriptive approach to the translation and reception of African American women’s literature in Spain. Drawing from a multidisciplinary theoretical and methodological framework, it traces the translation history of literature produced by African American women, seeking to uncover changing strategies in translation policies as well as shifts in interests in the target context, and it examines the topicality of this cohort of authors as frames of reference for Spanish critics and reviewers. Likewise, the reception of the source literature in the Spanish context is described by reconstructing the values that underlie judgements in different reception sources. Finally, this book addresses the specific problem of the translation of Black English into Spanish. More precisely, it pays attention to the ideological and the ethical implications of translation choices and the effect of the latter on the reception of literary texts.

Book Queering Women s and Gender Studies

Download or read book Queering Women s and Gender Studies written by Begoña Crespo and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2016-12-14 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume brings together approaches to, and perspectives on, English, Spanish, and Galician language, literature, and culture from the fields of women’s, gender, and queer studies. As its title reflects, the book adopts an inclusive attitude to the so-called “others” present in these fields. Since queer theory first appeared in academia, its influence has been notorious within both women’s and genders. As such, it is vital to “queer” academia so that it re-conceptualises its foundations; indeed, the contributions here serve to alter the reader’s consciousness of the terms “woman” and “gender”. The first chapters concern the field of discourse analysis. Two discuss the written work of female scientists in the Late Modern Era and their role in society. Another deals with women’s political discourse in South America. In the following section on literature, the contributors question the current heteronormative and androcentric ways of reading texts. The works on culture study contemporary genres, such as video games, video clips, and pieces of news, and take readers away from Europe. The Epilogue draws on the book’s intersubjective spirit to propose a dialogue, among multiple disciplines and the people who practise them. As such, the volume reflects the eclectic nature of queer, women’s, and gender studies, and their world-wide acceptance by the scholarly community.

Book CrossRoutes the Meanings of race for the 21st Century

Download or read book CrossRoutes the Meanings of race for the 21st Century written by Paola Boi and published by LIT Verlag Münster. This book was released on 2003 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection reflects the still urgent project of historical recuperation, as well as an examination of literary representations and other cultural manifestations of the Black Diaspora. Disciplinary work within the boundaries of African American Studies has been enhanced by more general considerations of the history of "race" and racism in globalized contexts. The articles assembled here reflect recent empirical research as well as challenging theoretical considerations. Contributions address particular formations of racialized modernity owed to the impact of the Atlantic slave trade and slavery, and thus broaden the approach to the Middle Passage, to improve our understanding of it as a constitutive transatlantic phenomenon in the widest possible sense.

Book Black USA and Spain

Download or read book Black USA and Spain written by Rosalía Cornejo-Parriego and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-07-24 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the 20th-century, Spaniards and African-Americans shared significant cultural memories forged by the profound impact that various artistic and historical events had on each other. Addressing three crucial periods (the Harlem Renaissance and Jazz Age, the Spanish Civil War, and Franco's dictatorship), this collection of essays explores the transnational bond and the intercultural exchanges between these two communities, using race as a fundamental critical category. The study of travelogues, memoirs, documentaries, interviews, press coverage, comics, literary works, music, and performances by iconic figures such as Josephine Baker, Langston Hughes, and Ramón Gómez de la Serna, as well as the experiences of ordinary individuals such as African American nurse Salaria Kea, invite an examination of the ambiguities and paradoxes that underlie this relationship: among them, the questionable and, at times, surprising racial representations of blacks in Spanish avant-garde texts and in the press during the years of Franco’s dictatorship; African Americans very unique view of the Spanish Civil War in light of their racial identity; and the oscillation between fascination and anxiety when these two communities look at each other.

His fictional world issues from an encyclopedic knowledge of the history, art, music, and literature of Latin America and Europe. Carpentier’s novels and stories are the enabling discourse of today’s Latin American narrative, and his interpretation of Latin American history has been among the most influential. Carpentier was the first to provide a comprehensive view of Caribbean history that centered on the contribution of Africans, above and beyond the differences created by European cultures and languages. Alejo Carpentier: The Pilgrim at Home, first published in 1977 and updated for this edition, covers the life and works of the great Cuban novelist, offering a new perspective on the relationship between the two. González Echevarría offers detailed readings of the works La música en Cuba, The Kingdom of This World, The Lost Steps, and Explosion in a Cathedral. In a new concluding chapter, he takes up Carpentier’s last years, his relationship with the Cuban revolutionary regime, and his last two novels, El arpa y la sombra and La consagración de la primavera, in which Carpentier reviewed his life and career.

Book The Decline and Fall of the Lettered City

Download or read book The Decline and Fall of the Lettered City written by Jean FRANCO and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2009-06-30 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The cultural Cold War in Latin America was waged as a war of values--artistic freedom versus communitarianism, Western values versus national cultures, the autonomy of art versus a commitment to liberation struggles--and at a time when the prestige of literature had never been higher. The projects of the historic avant-garde were revitalized by an anti-capitalist ethos and envisaged as the opposite of the republican state. The Decline and Fall of the Lettered City charts the conflicting universals of this period, the clash between avant-garde and political vanguard. This was also a twilight of literature at the threshold of the great cultural revolution of the seventies and eighties, a revolution to which the Cold War indirectly contributed. In the eighties, civil war and military rule, together with the rapid development of mass culture and communication empires, changed the political and cultural map. A long-awaited work by an eminent Latin Americanist widely read throughout the world, this book will prove indispensable to anyone hoping to understand Latin American literature and society. Jean Franco guides the reader across minefields of cultural debate and histories of highly polarized struggle. Focusing on literary texts by Garcia Marquez, Vargas Llosa, Roa Bastos, and Juan Carlos Onetti, conducting us through this contested history with the authority of an eyewitness, Franco gives us an engaging overview as involving as it is moving.

Book The Hidden Language of Baseball

Download or read book The Hidden Language of Baseball written by Paul Dickson and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2009-05-26 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Baseball is set apart from other sports by many things, but few are more distinctive than the intricate systems of coded language that govern action on the field and give baseball its unique appeal. During a nine-inning game, more than 1,000 silent instructions are given-from catcher to pitcher, coach to batter, fielder to fielder, umpire to umpire-and without this speechless communication the game would simply not be the same. Baseball historian Paul Dickson examines for the first time the rich legacy of baseball's hidden language, offering fans everywhere a smorgasbord of history and anecdote. Whether detailing the origins of the hit-and-run, the true story behind the home run that gave "Home Run" Baker his nickname, Bob Feller's sign-stealing telescope, Casey Stengel's improbable method of signaling his bullpen, the impact of sign stealing on the Giants' miraculous comeback in 1951, or the pitches Andy Pettitte tipped off that altered the momentum of the 2001 World Series, Dickson's research is as thorough as his stories are entertaining. A roster of baseball's greatest names and games, past and present, echoes throughout, making The Hidden Language of Baseball a unique window on the history of our national pastime.

Book excerpt: The unsent letter, the unwritten letter, the letter that begins to write itself in the mind as soon as a human language is learned is a universal experience--as natural, as inevitable, as constant and continuous as breathing itself. The battling spirit must seek to make contact with, and to reply to, those loved, those despised, those cherished, and those rejected. In the summer of 1967, in Paris, William Saroyan, aged fifty-nine, believed he might be ready to put a number of such letters into writing, at last. The letters are addressed to: The Only One; Armenak of Bitlis ; Dr. Freud, Dr. Jung, and Dr. Adler ; Hovagim Saroyan; Calouste Gulbenkian; Guy de Maupassant; The Match Girl; Prof-Kalfayan; Sammy Isaacs; Al Devarine; Samuel L. Clemens; Dikran Saroyan; Joe Gould; Miss Carmichael, Miss Thompson, Miss Brockington, Miss Clifford, Miss Chambers; Honoré de Balzac; Sam Catanzaro; Vahan Minasian; Geoffrey Faber; Robert McAlmon; Lawrence Colt; Yeghishe Charentz; Adolf Hitler; Carl Sandburg; Emory L. Ralston; Dr. Harold Fraser; Benito Mussolini; The Lion of Judah; Jacob Ahbood; Dr. Anoushavan Chomp; L. B. Mayer; Anybody. The letters speak for themselves.
