Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Among the most prominent of a new generation of Spanish architects, this Seville-based team has transformed the practice of architecture with the theory that "a building should explain itself." Through a language of industrial materials, Antonio Cruz and Antonio Ortiz demonstrate their technological prowess while at the same time creating simple geometries expressive of a spare modernism. Their work displays a remarkable ability to fuse the traditional architecture of their native Seville with the novelty of their abstract explorations of form. Works presented include Seville's Santa Justa Train Station, the Madrid Community Sports Stadium, the Huelva Bus Station, and a Housing Estate project in Tharsis. Cruz/Ortiz also contains a complete chronology of buildings and projects and an introduction by Rafael Moneo. The monograph documents the team's impressive work through numerous photographs and drawings, accompanied by project descriptions and commentary. Cruz and Ortiz are the recipients of the First National Prize for Spanish Architecture. Their work has been exhibited internationally

Book excerpt: On the occasion of Italio-Brazilian architect Lina Bo Bardi's one hundredth birthday, this richly illustrated volume presents an overview of her oeuvre and highlights iconic buildings, such as her own home, the so-called Casa de Vidro, the Museo de Arte de Sao Paulo, and the cultural center SESC Pompeia. This is a spectacular book on a celebrated architect. Spanning architecture, stage sets, fashion, and furniture, her work drew inspiration from the International Style, which she translated into her own visual language. Fundamental to her work was her thoughtful engagement with her adopted country of Brazil, its culture, society, and politics, and she productively and provocatively voiced her sometimes radical views through designs, exhibitions, and writings.

About our forests and rivers? About food? Book Image Text Architecture

Download or read book Image Text Architecture written by Robin Wilson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-09 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Image, Text, Architecture brings a radical and detailed analysis of the modern and contemporary architectural media, addressing issues of architectural criticism, architectural photography and the role of journal editors. It covers examples as diverse as an article by British artist Paul Nash in The Architectural Review, 1940, an early project by French architects Lacaton & Vassal published in the journal 2G, 2001, and recent photography by Hisao Suzuki for the Spanish journal El Croquis. At the intersection of image and text the book also reveals the role of the utopian impulse within the architectural media, drawing on theories of utopian discourse from the work of the French semiotician and art theorist Louis Marin, and the American Marxist critic Fredric Jameson. Through this it builds a fresh theoretical approach to journal studies, revealing a hitherto unexplored dimension of "latent" or "unconscious" discourse within the media portrait of architecture. The purpose of this enquiry is to highlight moments where a different type of critical voice emerges on the architectural journal page, indicating the possibility of a more progressive engagement with the media as a platform for critical and speculative thinking about architecture, and to rethink the journals’ role within architectural history.

Book excerpt: The Architectural Documents series sees the publication of the first monograph on one of the most extraordinary figures on the contemporary architectural scene, Toyo Ito of Japan (b. 1941). Since the 1970s Ito has been carrying out research into building materials, light and space, research which has led him to design buildings that he himself has defined as "non material": aerial structures, fluid and permeable spaces which avoid rigid compositional geometries. Over the years Ito has gradually simplified his language, and his work, the structure of which has increasingly lost importance, can be studied as a series of variations on the layering of the facade. His obsession with lightness and transparency are expressed to the full in the most important work of his creative career, the Sendai Mediatheque (1995-2001). This book, with an exceptional body of illustrations, presents the Japanese architects most significant projects, starting with the Aluminium House of 1970-1 through to the most recent project for the Mahler 4 office block in Amsterdam (2000-1). The appendix includes a complete list of Toyo Ito's works, a selection of his writings, as well as a biographical summary and up-to-date bibliography.
