Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modernity Disavowed is a pathbreaking study of the cultural, political, and philosophical significance of the Haitian Revolution (1791–1804). Revealing how the radical antislavery politics of this seminal event have been suppressed and ignored in historical and cultural records over the past two hundred years, Sibylle Fischer contends that revolutionary antislavery and its subsequent disavowal are central to the formation and understanding of Western modernity. She develops a powerful argument that the denial of revolutionary antislavery eventually became a crucial ingredient in a range of hegemonic thought, including Creole nationalism in the Caribbean and G. W. F. Hegel’s master-slave dialectic. Fischer draws on history, literary scholarship, political theory, philosophy, and psychoanalytic theory to examine a range of material, including Haitian political and legal documents and nineteenth-century Cuban and Dominican literature and art. She demonstrates that at a time when racial taxonomies were beginning to mutate into scientific racism and racist biology, the Haitian revolutionaries recognized the question of race as political. Yet, as the cultural records of neighboring Cuba and the Dominican Republic show, the story of the Haitian Revolution has been told as one outside politics and beyond human language, as a tale of barbarism and unspeakable violence. From the time of the revolution onward, the story has been confined to the margins of history: to rumors, oral histories, and confidential letters. Fischer maintains that without accounting for revolutionary antislavery and its subsequent disavowal, Western modernity—including its hierarchy of values, depoliticization of social goals having to do with racial differences, and privileging of claims of national sovereignty—cannot be fully understood.

Book excerpt: In this book, which was originally published in 1992, Klaus Scherer brought together leading scholars from the social sciences to discuss theoretical and empirical studies of justice. They examined the nature of justice from the perspective of philosophy, economics, law, sociology and psychology, and explored possible lines of convergence. A critical examination of theories of justice from Plato and Aristotle, through Marx, to Rawls and Habermas heads a collection which addresses the role of justice in economics and the law and which evaluates sociological and psychological stances in relation to justice distributive and procedural. All the material is of clear cross-disciplinary interest; and this broad and authoritative survey of thinking on the topic will appeal to all researchers in the area, whatever their background, as well as to those confronting issues of justice in law politics and business.

Book Life of Saint Aloysius Gonzaga Classic Reprint

Download or read book Life of Saint Aloysius Gonzaga Classic Reprint written by Father Virgil Cepari and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-12 with total page 502 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life of Saint Aloysius Gonzaga Alengthened sojourn in Italy has given special facilities to Father Frederick Schroeder to prepare the elaborate edition of Father Cepari's well known biography, which is now introduced to the English speaking public. Withthe thoroughness, which isthe characteristic of German research, he has pushedhis enquiries into entirely original sources; and has obtained access to authorities which had never been opened either to the Bollandists, or to any later writer of the life of S. Aloysius. Little has therefore been left for the editor of the English version, save to superintend the translations, the work in great part of kind friends, to re-write a chapter on the miracles of the Saint, in place of that of Father Cepari, to make a few slight additions to the notes and to add the letters of S. Aloysius, not published by Cepari or Schroeder. The translation, owing to circumstances beyond control, has been done under pressure of time. But every effort has been made to secure accuracy and fidelity, even perhaps at the cost of style. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
