Book Units in Physics and Chemistry Einheiten in Physik und Chemie

Download or read book Units in Physics and Chemistry Einheiten in Physik und Chemie written by and published by Springer. This book was released on 1991-12-16 with total page 391 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The idea to publish a Landolt-Börnstein volume solely devoted to the Fundamental Constants and the Physical and Chemical Units arose during the preparation of a symposium on "Metrology in Physics" held at the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt in Braunschweig, Germany. It was felt that such a volume could be very useful from many viewpoints. Precision measurement is of crucial importance for the progress of modern science and technology, and "Metrology", the art of performing precise measurements has become a widely acknowledged area of truly interdisciplinary character. The significance of the fundamental constants for the understanding of physics is by now well accepted, their use for the realization of the physical and chemical units being undoubted. The amount of available information turned out to be so substantial that the volume had to be split into two subvolumes. The present subvolume a covers the physical and chemical units, their description as well as the measuring principles and precision experimental techniques. In subvolume b which will follow shortly the status of the determination of the fundamental constants is summarized.

Download or read book A Different Universe written by Robert B Laughlin and published by Basic Books. This book was released on 2008-07-31 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Nobel-winning physicist argues that fundamental physical laws are found not in the world of atoms, but in the macroscopic world around us In this age of superstring theories and Big Bang cosmology, we're used to thinking of the unknown as impossibly distant from our everyday lives. But in A Different Universe, Nobel Laureate Robert Laughlin argues that the scientific frontier is right under our fingers. Instead of looking for ultimate theories, Laughlin considers the world of emergent properties-meaning the properties, such as the hardness and shape of a crystal, that result from the organization of large numbers of atoms. Laughlin shows us how the most fundamental laws of physics are in fact emergent. A Different Universe is a truly mind-bending book that shows us why everything we think about fundamental physical laws needs to change.

Book Metrology from Physics Fundamentals to Quality of Life

Download or read book Metrology from Physics Fundamentals to Quality of Life written by P. Tavella and published by IOS Press. This book was released on 2018-01-03 with total page 528 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Metrology is a constantly evolving field, and one which has developed in many ways in the last four decades. This book presents the proceedings of the Enrico Fermi Summer School on the topic of Metrology, held in Varenna, Italy, from 26 June to 6 July 2017. This was the 6th Enrico Fermi summer school devoted to metrology, the first having been held in 1976. The 2017 program addressed two major new directions for metrology: the work done in preparation for a possible re-definition of four of the base units of the SI in 2018, and the impact of the application of metrology to issues addressing quality of life – such as global climate change and clinical and food analysis – on science, citizens and society. The lectures were grouped into three modules: metrology for quality of life; fundamentals of metrology; and physical metrology and fundamental constants, and topics covered included food supply and safety; biomarkers; monitoring climate and air quality; new IS units; measurement uncertainty; fundamental constants; electrical metrology; optical frequency standards; and photometry and light metrology. The book provides an overview of the topics and changes relevant to metrology today, and will be of interest to both academics and all those whose work involves any of the various aspects of this field.

Book Fundamentals of Mass Determination

Download or read book Fundamentals of Mass Determination written by Michael Borys and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-05-09 with total page 121 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book on Fundamentals of Mass Determination, the definition and dissemination of units of mass is explained, starting with an introduction to metrology and mass determination. Establishing a mass scale requires corresponding mass standards and mass comparators. The metrological requirements for weighing instruments, weight pieces, and measuring conditions are explained and discussed based on international directives and applicable legal regulations. International directives and institutions are striving towards the worldwide uniform implementation of these requirements. Processes used to determine density and volume are described to the extent that they apply to mass determination. Calculating measurement uncertainty entails taking into consideration the effect of influence variables on mass determination. An overview of this topic is provided to make it easier to determine and specify measurement uncertainty in practice, while additional information in the form of tables, illustrations, and literature references allow the reader to study mass metrology further.
