Book Coastal Landscapes of South Australia

Download or read book Coastal Landscapes of South Australia written by Robert P. Bourman and published by University of Adelaide Press. This book was released on 2016-08-09 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Geologically, the South Australian coast is very young, having evolved over only 1% of geological time, during the past 43 million years since the separation of Australia and Antarctica. It is also very dynamic, with the current shoreline position having been established from only 7000 years ago. The South Australian mainland coast is 3816 km long, with islands providing an additional 1251 km of coast, giving a total coastline of just over 5000 km. South Australian coastal landforms include cliffs, rocky outcrops and shore platforms, mangrove woodlands, mudflats, estuaries, extensive sandy beaches, coastal dunes and coastal barrier systems, as well as numerous near-shore reefs and islands. This book is a landmark study into the variable character of the South Australian coast and its long-term evolution.

Book excerpt: Annabelle Collett (1955-2019) was a South Australian designer and artist whose work embraced art, design and craft. Her fashion designs and particularly her dramatic knitwear produced under the Ya Ya Oblique Clothing label attained international recognition. Her work also encompassed furniture design, graphics, costume and interior design, public art and environments. From the early 1990s Annabelle concentrated on making sculptural art pieces about the human form and its coverings, looking at the function and cultural meaning of attire with reference to ideas about gender, the body and sexuality. In more recent years Collett also investigated notions of camouflage, disguise, pattern and the affect of disruptions to pattern. She is also known for a series of works with recycled and found plastics that focussed on repurposing waste and challenged the widespread adoption of single-use plastics. Having been based in Adelaide most of her career, in 2009 she moved to Clayton Bay where she enjoyed a rich collaboration with communities in the Alexandrina region as well as pursuing her own practice.

Download or read book Dolphins Whales Me written by Mike Bossley and published by . This book was released on 2022-04-30 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dolphins and whales are a "mind in the waters", with self-awareness, culture, and complex communication. But they, and their cousins the whales, are under threat almost everywhere from hunting, entanglement, habitat damage and toxic pollution. This book puts Dr Mike Bossley's research and activism into an international perspective on the campaign to protect these enigmatic beings. This book describes Mike's epiphany watching dolphins bodysurfing with humans and goes on to describe his work in helping stop whaling in Australia and then reducing it worldwide, and how, as one of the founders of Greenpeace International, he helped the organisation evolve from a scattered band of eco-anarchists into the most powerful environmental organisation of the twentieth century. Along the way Mike Bossley has survived the attempted assassination by French commandoes who bombed the Rainbow Warrior in Auckland harbour; turned an ecological slum into an internationally respected dolphin sanctuary; befriended a lonely hermit dolphin and performed psychotherapy on him; and documented the emergence of cultural behaviour in Adelaide dolphins. In many ways the situation is gloomy, but Mike Bossley hopes this book will inspire people to make a better world for dolphins, whales and all their oceans, and in so doing, to make a better world for all of us.

As he travels from family to family in different cities, he works as an Authenticator, verifying world records, confirming facts, setting things straight, while his own life is a teetering tower of breathtaking lies and betrayals. 'Some books read as if they are touched by magic, so wondrous and astonishing is the experience of immersing yourself in them. That's how I feel about The Wonder Lover . It is written with confidence and daring, with a joyous freedom and a love for story and language that is only possible when an artist has truly mastered their craft. It is a compulsive and thrilling read, a dazzling achievement. There is a word that should be used very rarely but I believe is absolutely right for this book: The Wonder Lover is superb.' -- Christos Tsiolkas, author of The Slap

Their bucket list wasnt long, but they decided to get on with it while they could. They became intrepid travellers, exploring many parts of our beautiful country. They walked through the most spectacular gorges, snorkelled the magnificent Ningaloo Reef, traversed Australias infamous wilderness tracks, fossicked for gems, became avid bird watchers and went fishing. They took a magnificent boat ride through the Buccaneer Archipelago and experienced the amazing Horizontal Waterfall. While they did follow the tar sometimes, Lorraine and Mike often went bush to find breathtaking views, peace, relaxation and glorious sunrises and sunsets that lit up the sky. After eight wonderful years of living and loving life it is time to share their travels.

Book So Long a Letter

Book excerpt: Written by award-winning African novelist Mariama Bâ and translated from the original French, So Long a Letter has been recognized as one of Africa’s 100 Best Books of the 20th Century. The brief narrative, written as an extended letter, is a sequence of reminiscences —some wistful, some bitter—recounted by recently widowed Senegalese schoolteacher Ramatoulaye Fall. Addressed to a lifelong friend, Aissatou, it is a record of Ramatoulaye’s emotional struggle for survival after her husband betrayed their marriage by taking a second wife. This semi-autobiographical account is a perceptive testimony to the plight of educated and articulate Muslim women. Angered by the traditions that allow polygyny, they inhabit a social milieu dominated by attitudes and values that deny them status equal to men. Ramatoulaye hopes for a world where the best of old customs and new freedom can be combined. Considered a classic of contemporary African women’s literature, So Long a Letter is a must-read for anyone interested in African literature and the passage from colonialism to modernism in a Muslim country. Winner of the prestigious Noma Award for Publishing in Africa.
